RECEPTACLE-STOPPER.
Specification of Letters Patent.

Application filed June 27, 1919. Serial No. 307,230.
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, RUssnLL G. ALLEN, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Toledo, in the county of Lucas and State of Ohio, have invented a certain new and useful ReceptacleStopper; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to ence marked thereon, this specification.
This invention relates to stopper means for bottles or other receptacles and has for its object the provision of a simple grid etlicient means of this class, which is inexpensive in its construction and composed of a minimum number of parts and which is removable from the receptacle when not clamped thereto to enable it to be used on different receptacles.

Figure 1 is a perspective view of a receptacle embodying the invention attached to a bottle neck. Fig. 2 is a side elevation thereof. Fig. 3 is a similar View with the clamp released and partly removed from the bottle neck. Fig. 4 is a central vertical section of Fig. 2, and Figs. 5, 6 and 7 are perspective views of the different members of the stopper.
Referring to the drawings, 1 designates a receptacle, in the present instance in the form of a bottle, the neck of which is provided adjacent to its mouth with an annular external shoulder 2.
The stopper means embodying the invention comprises a stopper member 3 of sheet metal or other suitable material, which is provided at one edge with a downwardly and inwardly extending member 4: for hooking or engaging around the shoulder 2 at one side of the receptacle neck and having an ear or flange 5 at its opposite edge for extending down at the side of the shoulder 2 in slightly spaced relation thereto and below the same at the opposite side of the neck of the lip 4. A gasket 6 of rubber, cork, or other suitable material, is secured to the under or inner side of the member 3 which form a part of the characters of referin position to hermetically close the receptacle mouth when the stopper member is pressed in closing engagement therewith.
The clamping member '7 of the stopper means, in the present instance, is formed in U-shape from a heavy grade of wire with its loop positioned at the inner side of the ear 5 adjacent thereto in position to engage under the adjacent edge of the shoulder 2 and to be held against a lateral or outward releasing movement relative to the receptacle neck by said ear when the member 7 is in clamped engagement or is being drawn into clamping engagement with the shoulder 2. The legs of the clamping member 7 extend outward through registering openings or notches 8 in the stopper member 3 adj acent to the ear 5 and have their outer ends turned inward to form axially alined pintles 9 for carrying the lever member 10.
The lever member 10, in the present instance, is mounted between the legs of the clamping members 7 and is provided in its sides adjacent to its inner end with eyes 11 for receiving the pintles 9. The lever is provided at the inner side of its inner end with'a cam portion 12, which, upon a swinging of the lever to the clamping position shown in Figs. 1 and 2, coacts with the top of the stopper member from which the ear 5 projects and causes an outward drawing of the looped end of the member 7 into engagement with the shoulder 2 and a consequent inward pressing of the stopper memher in closing relation to the receptacle mouth. During a forcing of the stopper member 3 into clamping or closing engagement with the receptacle mouth the hooked lip 4 thereof is engaged under the adjacent edge of the shoulder 2 so as to coact with the shoulder to form a hinge to guide the closing movements of the stopper and to hold the adjacent edge of the stopper member in close clamping engagement with the receptacle mouth. It is preferable to inwardly curve the free or outer end of the lever 10 to adapt it, when in closed position, to fit around the lip i, and to provide such curved portion with an inwardly pressed or extending tongue 13 for springing into a registering recess 14 in the lip 4: to yieldingly retain the lever in its closed position, as shown in Fig. 4.
It is evident in the use of my stopper means, that in applying the same to a receptacle neck the lever and clamping memher are disposed in the position shown in Fig. 3, relative to the stopper 7, with the looped clamping end of the member '7 projected below the ear 5. Vith the parts of the stopper means in this position the lip 4 may be placed in engagement with the receptacle shoulder 2 at one side of the neck and the stopper member then forced down over the mouth of the receptacle in substantially closing position or as nearly so as the gasket 6 will permit without inserting a clamping pressure thereto. The lever 10 is then swung into its reclining position to effect an outward drawing of the clamping member 7, with its loop disposed at the inner side of the ear 5 in clamping engagement with the shoulder 2, and to cause the stopper member and its gasket to be firmly forced into closing engagement with the receptacle mouth, as shown in Figs. 1 and 2.
It is evident that I have provided asimple and efiicient stopper means for bottles, fruitjars, or the like, which is capable of being easily and quickly applied to and removed from the receptacle neck and which is composed of a minimum number of parts.
This application is filed as a division of my copending. application which contains claims broadly to but not specifically covering the same.
I wish it understood that my invention is not limited to any specific construction, arrangement or form of the parts, as it is capable of numerous modifications and changes without departing from the spirit of the claims. I
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is,
1. A stopper means having a stopper member provided with a lip at one edge for engaging under a receptacle shoulder, a clamping member for engaging the receptacle shoulder at the opposite side of the receptacle neck to said lip, and a member connected to said clamping member at the outer side of the stopper member and movable in a planelongitudinal to the receptacle to im part opposed clamping movements to the stopper and clamping members.
2. A stopper means having a stopper member for seating on and closing the mouth of a receptacle neck and having a lip at one edge for hooked engagement with a shoulder on the receptacle neck, a U-shaped clamping member having its loop disposed at the inner side of the stopper member in position to have clamping engagement with the neck shoulder at the opposite side of the neck to said lip, and a lever member connected to said clamping member without the stopper member and operable to impart opposed clamping movements to said clamping and stopper members.
3. A stopper means having a stopper member for seating on and closing the mouth of a receptacle and having a portion at one edge for hooked engagement with an ex ternal shoulder on the neck, a U-shaped clamping member having its legs projected through the stopper member adjacent to the edge thereof opposed to said hooked portion and having its looped end disposed at the inner side of the stopper member for engagement with the neck shoulder, the leg terminals of said elamping'member being provided with pintles, and a cam lever tulerumed to said pintles and operable to impart opposed clamping movements to said stopper and clamping members.

A stopper of the class described having a stopper member provided at-opposite edges with laterally projecting members, one for engagementunder a neck shoulder, a clamping member having a part disposed at the inner side of the stopper member for engaging under the neck shoulder at the inner side of said other laterally projecting portion and prevented from movements transverse to the receptacle neck by said portion, and a lever connected to said clamping memher at the outer side of the stopper member and operable to act on both said stopper and clamping members to impart opposed clamping movements thereto.
, 5. A stopper means having a stopper member for seating on a receptacle mouth, a clamping member for engaging a shoulder on the receptacle at the inner side of the stopper member, and means connected to the clamping member at the outer side of the stopper member and operable toimpart opposed clamping movements to said members, said means and stopper member having parts which releasably engage when the means is in closed position to yieldingly retain the means in such position.
6. A stopper means having a stopper member for seating on a receptacle mouth, a clamping member for engaging a shoulder on the receptacle at the inner side of the stopper member, and means connected to the clamping member at the outer side of the stopper member and operable to impart opposed clamping movements to said members, said clamping member and stopper having parts which coact to retain the clamping member in engagement with the receptacle shoulder when the clamping member is in clamping position.
