sealing covers have been'heretofore employ-l ed, the same have been relatively costly and 315 have always been based upon exact fitting of the cover to the mouth of the dispenser and Y this exact fitting of the cover to theV mouth of the dispenser has necessitated the rejection of a considerable portion of the containers 2o which in the case of glass are molded because in the cooling of the glass, there is a certain shrinkage or warpage which is undeterminable.
The resent invention therefore is di-y rected to the provision of a sealing cover that is readily adaptable to all jars of a similar type irrespective of a warpage or a slight deformation from the true and desired mouth construction without the resultant loss of sealing power.
One feature of the invention consists in the cam lever action of the cover adjacent its hinge and the ,other consists of a camiock action of the cover opposite therefrom. The
third feature consists in the detachable mounting for the cover and the association with either or both of the aforesaid.
The full nature of the ,invention will be understood from the accompanying drawings and the following description and claims.
Fig. 1 is a perspective view of the cover in detachable mounting. Fig. 2 is an enlarged v central sectional view through a neck and mouth of a dispensing jar and the cover showing the latter in the open and drawn back position. Fig. 3 is a similar view of the same parts showing the same in the initial closing position. Fig. d is a similar view. of the same parts in the mouth closing position buttzn'ot irr-sealingpositioir.. There5 is thus provided. an elongated@tubular.;V
hinge forming portion forrreceivingthe midi portionv 22 offa` detachableclampingk construction including they U,shaped' portionof which.
the mrd-portion.v 22.is.the central portion: and the two outwardly `directed intermediateaponetions 23 each taperingfinan arcuate;portlonv 24.. Said arcuate-portions extend` in substantially` a4 circular relation for: embracingthe neck of the dispensing. j ar and frictionally support the cover thereon.. The cover 14 is .provided with a; linger .engageable portionfA that extends outwardly andthe samefis indi-y cated. at 25. Aan: angular: intermediate p'ortion4 or nose 26 constitutes a clamping` lock; and the end. portion, 27 is suitably secured; to
the cover as by the rivets 28. Thesealingf' memberr 17: is preferably cut away asfati'29 I for such purpose.
Assliofwn inrthe several figuresofthe drawings, the cover has a wedging action (see Fig. 3) for elevating the clamp in the closing movement of the cover. The cover is substantially closed when positioned as shown in Fig. 4. To obtain an actual sealing action, the cover ispressed downwardly at its free end, which operation causes the nose 26 to ride over and seat beneath the bead 13, at the same time drawing the cover forwardly and creating a camming action of the cover in the Zone of the hinge. This camming operation, together With the retaining action of the nose 26, causes the gasket to be tightly clamped upon the ar mouth throughout the entire circumference of the latter.
This construction, as heretofore stated, is adaptable to the average run of jars that are formed by molded glass and the like, which as heretofore stated, Will not be exactly uniform, due to individual variations asa result of a 'difference in cooling, annealing and molding.
The present invention, therefore, permits the cover construction to be applied to practically every molded liar of the same size and thus practically eliminates all rejects in the ars. J Any suitable type of anchorage for the clamp, the hinge and the gasket may be pro- 1 vided, and that shown herein is merely an embodiment of the broad invention.
The invention claimed is:
l. The combination with a jar having a mouth with, an Iexternal locking bead at the edge thereof, of a detachable cover anchorage on said jar beneath said bead, a cover of greater diameter than the jar mouth, a gasket in said cover to engage said mouth, a hinge member and a latching nose depending from the outer edge 01 said cover at diametrically opposite points, said hingemember looped around said anchorage in such manner as to permit a limited movement of the cover at right angles to the axis of the jar, whereby When the nose engages and passes around the bead a camming action will be produced in the Zone of the hinge.
2. The combination with a jar having a mouth with an external locking bead at the edge thereof, of a detachable cover anchorage on the j ar beneath the bead, a cover for said jar, a hinge and a latching nose depending from said cover at diametrically opposite points, said hinge looped around said anchorage in such manner as to permit a limited movement of tne cover at right angles to the axis of the jar, the distance between said hinge and nos-e being less than the external diameter of said mouth, whereby when the nose engages and passes around the .head a camming action Will be produced in the Zone of the hinge.
In Witness whereof, l have hereunto affixed my signature.
DAVID ADDSON JENKINS.
