COMBINATION AND CHAIR.
Specification of Letters Patent. PatentedJa n, 13, 1920,
Application filed April22,1918. Serial no. 230,078.
To all whom it may concern: I
Be it known that we, ROBERT L. LEATHER- MAN and FRANK PFROGNER, citizens of the United States, residing at Mount Pleasant, in the county of Westmoreland and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Combination Desks and Chairs, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to furniture and more particularly to a combination desk and seat. v
The primary object of this invention resides in the provision of a combination desk and seat which can be adjusted to various heights.
Another object of this invention resides in the provision of a combination desk and seat the construction of which is such that the necessity of employing a kit of tools to adjust the same is eliminated.
A further object of this invention resides in the provision of a combination desk and seat consisting of a minimum number of elements which are cheap of manufacture and readily adapted for the purpose of its adoption.
With these and other objects in view this invention resides in certain novel features of construction and arrangement of elements to be more fully set forth in the specification herewith and pointed out in the appended claim.
In the accompanying drawing Figure 1 is a side view of a desk and seat constructed in accordance with this invention;
Fig. 2 is a plan view thereof;
Fig. 3 is a side view of a desk and seat showing a modified form of construction;
Fig. 4 is a detail section view on line 4.l: of Fig. 3.
In the present embodiment of this invention the numeral 21 designates the main standard having the bolt ears 2%, 24, and 22 an auxiliary standard. The main standard has the parallel spaced slots, 6. 6, while the auxiliary standard has the slot .25. The slots 6, 6 are arranged for the reception of cleats 8 that are secured to a desk 10 to maintain its rigidity with the standards when adjusted to the desired height.
In order to facilitate the adjustment of the desk, a rack 12 is secured in any suitable position thereto for engagement with a gear 14 that is secured to 'ashaft 16 journaled in the standards. This shaft has a ratchet wheel 17 secured thereto for coaction with a pawl 18 to retain the gear in an immovable position after having actuated the rack to adjust the desk. Removable or otherwise engaged by the shaft is a handle 19 for manipulating the shaft. As shown in Fig. 2, the deskhas the back 22 with its end projecting outward, these ends being clamped between the standards, 5 and 22',
whereby the desk is clamped and held in adjusted position.
T-he aforesaid standards consist of separable sections between which the back 22 of the desk is clamped by means of suitable bolts 23 which engage bolt ears 24 formed on the standards.
The sections 22 have grooves 25 formed therein for the reception of slidable blocks 26 that are secured by a rod 26 to brackets 27 which are secured to a seat 28.
Pivotally secured to the brackets as at 29 are curved pawls 30 which are utilized to engage arcual notches 31 formed in said sections 22 of the standards to support the seat in an extended position.
With the above construction it is readily apparent that the seat and desk can be adjusted to any desired height and since the standards coact in supporting the desk and seat in their adjusted positions, it is manifest that a simply constructed combination seat and desk is produced.
In the'form shown in Figs. 3 and 4, the arcual notches 31 are dispensed with, and other grooves 32 are provided for the reception of other blocks 34 carried by the brackets 27 and secured in the desired adjusted position by pins 35 or the like that pass through apertures 36 in the standards. With this embodiment of elements it is manifest that the cost of production is reduced without sacrificing the initial advantages as the adjustment of the desk remains as heretofore set forth while the adjustment of the seat is accomplished by GK- tracting the pins 35 and sliding the blocks in alinement with other apertures.
In either disclosure of the seat hinges as at 37 may beprovided to permit the same to be folded when unoccupied.
Having thus fully set forth the advantages of this invention, it is manifest that a desk and seat is produced which can be adjusted to comfortably accommodate individuals while occupied at a desk.
Having thus described this invention what we claim is In a device of the character described, and in combination, a main supporting standard having parallel spaced slots, a shaft held to said standard, a gear on said shaft, a ratchet on said shaft, a pawl secured to said standard in contact with said ratchet, a desk having extending cleats arranged to slide in said spaced slots, a rack bar extending from said desk and meshing with said gear, an auxiliary standard, and a back secured to said desk having its ends projecting and clamped between said standards, whereby said desk is held in adjusted position.
In testimony whereof we affix our si'gnatures.
ROBERT LEE LEATHERMAN. FRANK PFROGNER.
