UNITARY WRITING-DESK AND SEAT.
Application filed August 29, 1916.
T0 all Lo/wm it may concern Be it known that I, I-IENRrcUs MARTINUs RAGnTLm, subject of the Queen of the Netherlands, and resident of Baardwijk, the Netherlands, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Unitary VVriting- Desks and Seats, of which the following is a specification. l
This invention relates to unitary writing desks and seats, in which the desks and seats are adjustable; such devices being particularly intended for use in schools and the like.
Heretofore the use of such unitary desks and seats has not been extensive owing to the complicated character thereof and to the fact that they have not satisfied requirements. as to adjustability and general utility.
According to this invention the improved writing desk is readily adjustable to suit normally developed children or adults, the arrangement being such that the necessznrjr adjustments are effected simultaneously so as to retain the desk and seat in correct relative position for obtaining ease and comfort in writing. The arrangement, however, is such that the seat and desk may be independently adjusted to suit persons having abnormal bodies.
In order that the said invention may be clearly understood and readily carried into effect, the same will now be described with reference to the preferred embodiment illustrated in the accompanying drawing, in which an elevation of the device showing the parts in the extreme positions of adjustment in full and broken lines respectively.
In the figure a represents the fixed part (frame) of the device, I) the vertically adjustable desk frame and o the desk leaf connected to slide forward and backward on the latter. The .seat e is similarly connected to the seat frame el which is vertically and horizontally adjustable; the seat back is indicated by f.
rIhe desk frame Z) and the seat frame Z may be adjusted simultaneously or independently to the desired height, through the intervention of screw spindles z' and 7c, the latter spindle being suitably inclined as Shown in the drawing. Motion is imparted to the two screw spindles by an intermediate spindle g which is provided at its respective ends with bevel wheels it and g.
'Ihe bevel wheel h engages with a similar wheel It carried by the lower end of the Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Dec. I2, i916.
serial No. 117,391.
spindle z' and the bevel wheel g with a bevel wheel g2 carried by a shaft g3 adapted to be rotated by a crank or similar device applied to the end thereof. Bevel wheel g2 is also in mesh with a similar wheel g4 carried by the lower end of the spindle 7c so that when the shaft g3 is rota-ted both the screw spindles t' and 7c will be operated. The desk and seat frames Z) and Z may be provided with threaded orifices or nuts for engaging with the spindles a and 7c so that said frames will traverse the spindles when they are rotated. rIhe adjustable desk frame o bears a journal Z acting as the fulcru'm of a rotatable bell crank lever; the latter is connected at one end with the fixed frame by means of the link n, at the other end with the movable desk leaf c by means of the member 0. In the same way a bell crank lever g rotatable about the journal 7) of the adjustable seat frame CZ, is connected at one end with the fixed frame a by means of the link r, at the other end with the movable seat e by means of the link s and the seat back f-which is vertically slidable on the seat frame cZ-by means of the link t.
It is obvious that a rotation of the bevel wheel g causes the desk frame b to rise by means of the screw spindle a', the seat frame Z to rise and to move at the same time backward by means of the screw spindle 7e while the desk leaf e will move at the same time backward, the seat e forward and the seat back upward.
The position of the different parts for maximum adjustment is indicated by broken lines, and the corresponding reference letters are marked with accents.
rIhe rate of the adjustment of the movable parts depends upon the transmission rate of the bevel wheel gears, the pitches of the screw spindles z' and and the length and arrangement of the members connecting the fixed with the movable parts of the desk and seat. The respective rates of adjustment are designed to accord with requirements. In order to render it easier for the child or adult to sit down or leave the desk the lower part u of the desk leaf c may be made reversible. rIhis part u is marked in its reversed position by u.
By providing a coupling or similar device which is easily engaged or disengaged, the desk and the seat may be independently ad# justed.
I-Iaving now described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is l. In a unitary Writing desk and seat, the combination of a main frame7 two frames adjustably mounted thereon, a seat slidably supported on one of said adjustable frames l adjustable frame, a folding desk leaf slidably supported on one of the adjustable frames, a seat slidably supported on the other adjustable frame, means for eil'ecting the vertical adjustment and distance of separation of said adjustable frames, and means operated simultaneously with the aforesaid means for slidably displacing the desk and seat With respect to their supporting frames.
3. In a unitary Writing desk and seat, the combination of a main frame, a frame adjustably mounted on one end of said main frame7 a frame adjustably mounted on the main frame a suitable distance from the other adjustable frame, a desk leaf slidably supported on one of the adjustable frames, a seat slidably supported on the other adjustable frame, operating gear for effecting 1 the vertical adjustment and distance of separation of said adjustable frames, and link mechanism effective when the adjustable frames are moved t0 displace the desk and seat With respect to their supporting frames.
4. In a unitary Writing desk and seat, the combination of a fixed main frame, an ad justable seat frame, a seat slidably mounted on said seat frame, a back for said seat, link mechanism for connecting the seat and back with the seat frame and main frame, a desk leaf slidably mounted on said desk frame, link mechanism for connecting the desk leaf With the desk frame and main frame, said link mechanisms imparting movement to the seat and seat back and desk leaf when the seat and desk frames are adjusted.
5. In a unitary Writing desk and seat as herein set forth, the combination of an adjustable seat frame, a seat slidably mounted on said seat frame, a back adjustable with respect to said seat, an adjustable desk frame, a desk leaf slidably mounted on said desk frame, and means for effecting the si multaneous adjustment of all of said elements to suit the body dimensions of children or adults.
Signed at Scheveningen the Netherlands this 3d day of July A. D. 1916.
