To all 'whom t may/concern: y
Be it known thatI, SAMUEL, Hnison, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of the city of New York, borough of Bronx, in the county of Bronx and State of New York, have invented a new and Improved lSnap, of which the following is a full, clear, and eXact description.
Various means have been constructed with a view of providing an ornamental member for securingtogether the two ends of a chain, Y such as a lavallire, or conveniently securing together the ends of a cord adapted to receive beads, pearls, etc.
Known constructionsV have heretofore proved slightly impractical, for the reasonv 'that the grasped portion of the snaphad to be inserted in a certain manner into the grasping portion thereotto effectively lock the two parts together. Another objection which inventions of this nature have presentedV is that of the likelihood of breakage occurring, which in the caseof a light chain vwould almost invariably result in the lossA of the chain and any article appended thereto, as the snap would readily open.V
My invention aims to provide a snap in which the grasped portion may be inserted in the grasping portion in any manner desired, which shall loe ornamental, and yet so simple in construction as to prohibit any `danger of breakage occurring.
Reference is had to the attached sheet of drawings which illustrates practical embodiments of my invention, and in which- Figure l illustrates a side view of the grasped and grasping portions of the snap separated one from the othe'rand with the two ends of a chain attached thereto;
Fig. 2 is an enlarged sectional view on line 2-2 of Fig. 3;
Fig. 3 is afsectional view taken along line 3 3 of Fig. 2; f'
Fig. 4 is an enlarged elevational view of the vmember associated with the grasping portion, and j Fig. 5 is a sectional view, similar to Fig. 3, of a slightlymodiiied form of snap.
In all these views like reference numeralsv designate similar parts, and the reference numeral 1 indicates the grasping member which has conveniently associated with its lower end an eyelet to which a chain, thread, 1
etc., may be attached. The grasping member 1 may include, as is clearly shown in Specification of Letters Patent. Patterned Da, 23, 1919, Application led September 18, 1919. Serial No. 324,383.
V4 the outer end of the arms of which are bent inwardly one toward the other, as indicated by the reference numeral 5. In this connection it will be noted'that the outer ends of the arms of the U-shaped member i terminate at a point short of the endof the half sections 2 and 3, which provides an opening at the 'outer end of the grasping member. y
The grasping member includes a V-shaped, resilient member 6 one of the arms of which is slightly shorter than the other, the end of the longer arm being bent toward the shorter arm and partially overlying the same, as indicated bythe reference numeral '7. w In this connection it will be noted that the portion 7 of the grasping member has its outer edge shaped so las to conform to the contour of the outer end of the half sections 2 and 3, and is further provided-with a conveniently attached eyelet adapted to receive the end link o'l' a chain, or a cord.
The outer end of the shorter arm of the V-shaped grasped member 6 is bent outwardly, Vas indicated with the reference numeral 8, and the longer arm is provided with an outstanding portion 9 occupying the same relative planeas the portion S of the shorter arm, both such projection and arm being provided at their outer ends with roughened thumb pieces 10 conveniently attached. The V-shaped member is further formed in such a manner that notches are provided in its outer edge adjacent and below the outwardly-bent portion 8 and the outstanding portion 9.
It will now'be seen that the grasped por tion may readily be inserted between the half sections 2 and 3 of the grasping portion 1 and lrmly pressed therein, which will result in the arms of such V-shaped member 6 being moved one toward the other until the notches formed in such latter membent arms of the Uf'shaped link, whereupon f they will snap outwardly, as clearly shown ber reach a -point adjacent the inwardlyl aforestated, has been roughened, being pressed together and the V-shaped member' withdrawn.
Obviously, in some instances it might prove impracticable, as well as expensive, to provide a U-shaped member 4C, and for this reason, reference being had to Fig. 5, I may provide my ` halll sections 2 and 3 with integral ,inwardly-extending projections ll which will serve the same purpose as the inwardly-bent .outer ends 5 of the U-shaped member 4t. j
Further, it will be appreciated that by virtue Vof 4the construction illustrated the V-shaped member may be inserted with its shorter arm toward either side, as the case may be, without in the least affecting the functioning of the snap, which will operate just as eiiiciently in either position.
Obviously, any number of modifications may be made without in the least departing from the scope oit my invention.

A snap including a grasping and a grasped member, which grasping member comprisestwo halt sections orn'ied with a space therebetween at one of their ends, inwardly-extending projections adjacent the ends of such space, said grasped member ircluding a V-shaped resilient member formed with notches adjacent its outer end, said notches being adapted to be engaged by the projections within the grasping member.
2. A snap including a grasping and a grasped member, which grasping member comprises two half sections formed with a space therebetween at one of their ends, inwardly-extending projections adjacent the ends of such space, said gra-sped member including a V-shaped resilient member having one of its arms longer than its opposite arm, the longer of said arms being bent so as to extend toward and partially overlying the shorter arm and conforming to the contour of the spaced ends or' the half. sections, the outer edges of the arms of the V-sliaped member being formed with notches adapted to be engaged by the projections within'the grasping member.
3. A snap including a grasping` and a grasped member, which grasping member lcomprises two half sections `formed with a to be engaged by the projections within theV grasping' member, the outer end of said shorter arm being bent upwardly, the longer arm being provided with an outwardly-ein.l
