CIGAR-HOLDING DEVICE.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, LAWRENCE C. FURTON, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at Detroit, in the county of Wayne and State of Michigan, have invented certain new and useful improvements in Cigar- Holding Devices, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawings.

The users of clgar and cigarette holders are often troubled by cigars and cigarettes becoming detached from the holders after having been placed therein, and this is par ticularly true in connection with cigar holders because cigars are of different shapes and one cigar may not fit as well in a holder as another cigar. To prevent a cigar or the like from becoming displaced I furnish a holder with means by which a cigar may be clamped and held in a holder, said means being in the form of an attachment that may be applied to an ordinary cigar holder, and

in some instances the cigar clamping means may form a permanent part of any metallic trimming mounted on the holder.

My invention further aims to provide cigar clamping means that may be easily actuated when placing a cigar in engagement with a holder and the clamping means is such as not to injure the cigar or interfere with smoking the same in the usual manner.

In carrying my invention into effect, I have devised two forms of a holder, said forms differing particularly in the pivotal arrangement of the cigar holding members and the construction of each form will be hereinafter specifically described and then claimed.

Reference will now be had to the drawing, wherein Figure 1 is a perspective View of one form of the cigar clamping device;

Fig. 2 is a plan of the other form of device;

Fig. 3 is a side elevation of the same, and

Fig. 4: is a developed view of the holder member shown in Figs. 2 and 3.

Reference will first be had to Fig. 1 showing a conventional form of cigar holder 1 having a mouth piece 2 at its inner end and a collar 3 at its outer end. Clamped about the holder 1, adjacent the collar 3, is a metallic band 4 preferably made of metal, the

band in its embryo form being in the form of a strip which has one end thereof reduced or shaped to provide a malleable tongue 5, and the opposite end of the strip is provided with an opening 6 through which the tongue may extend and be bent to hookform to hold the ends of the strip together, thus completing a band that is friotionally held or clamped on the holder, and the collar 3 of said holder will prevent longitudinal movement of the band in one direction should it become loose.

The strip from which the band 1 is formed may be cut and stamped from sheet metal and in so cutting the strip one edge thereof is provided with resilient arms 7, said arms being in opposed relation at the front edge of the strip after it is clamped on the holder 1. The resilient arms 7 receive a double bend at the band 4: with the innermost bent portion 8 apertured, as at 9, and the-outer-' most bent portion 10 lending resiliency to each arm. I

Extending through the apertures f the innermost bent portions 8 of theresilient arms 7 are cigar clamping members 11 said members being securely mounted in the apertures 9 so as to laterally pivot in the innermost bent portions 8 of the resilient arms 7. The cigar clamping members 11 are in the form of comparatively flat strips having the outer ends thereof provided with semi cylindrical cigar engaging heads 12 which are adapted to cooperate in embracing a cigar 13 having its lnner end in the outer retains the cigar within the holder 1 against accidental displacement. 1

After the clamping members 11 are placed in the apertures 9 of the resilient arms 7, the inner ends of the clamping members 11 are enlarged, flattened or curved to form finger pieces 14. which may be pressed towards the walls of the holder l'to separate or open the heads 12 so that the cigar may be removed from between the heads and out of the holder 1, particularly after the greater part of the cigar has been smoked, or burned.

The link 15, intermediate its ends, has transverse members 17 and resilient arms 18, said arms being at the inner edge of the link and on the outer edge of the link are sets of apertured lugs 19. Pivotally mounted between the sets of lugs 19, by pins 20, rivets or other fastening means are cigar clamping members 21 having the outer ends thereof provided with cigar engaging heads 22, similar to the heads 12. The inner ends of the clamping members 21 terminate in finger pieces 23 normally engaged by the resilient arms 18 and said finger pieces may be pressed towards the holder 1 to further separate the cigar engaging heads 22 and release the cigar 13.

The cigar clamping device maybe made of light and durable metal finished to present a neat and attractive appearance on the holder 1, either as an attachment thereto or as a fixture on the holder, it being possible in some instances ,to slip the attachment from the inner ,end of the holder so that the same may be discarded should a cigar snugly fit within the holder 1 and not require additional holding means.

It is thought that the utility of my device will be apparent without further descrip tion, and while in the drawing there is illustrated the preferred embodiments of my invention, it is to be understood that the structural elements are susceptible to such changes, in size, shape and manner of as sembly, as fall within the scope of the appended claims.

VVhat I claim is 1. A cigar or cigarette holding device for attachment to a holder and comprising a sheet metal band. formed with integral spring arms extending laterally from said band and interlocking means on the ends of the band for detachably holding the band in place upon a holder, a pair of holding arms pivotally attached to said band intermediate their ends with said spring arms engaging said holding arms, said arms being formed with head portions curved transversely to embrace a cigar in the holder, said holding arms being extended beyond the end of said holder.

2. A cigar or cigarette holding device for attachment to a holder and comprising metallic band to embrace the holder and detachably hold the device in place upon the holder, said band being formed. with an opening adjacent one end and a bendable tongue upon its opposite end to engage said opening, said band being also formed with integral laterally extending spring arms and pairs of outwardly extending lugs in longitudinal alignment with said spring arms, and holding arms pivotally supported intermediate their ends between said lugs with an end portion of each arm engaged by the adjacent spring arm to hold said arms turned upon their pivotal supports, said holding arms being formed with heads err-- tended and curved transversely of said holding arms to embrace a cigar held in the holder, said holding arms being extended beyond the end of said holder to engage said heads with the cigar at a distance beyond the end ofthe holder.
