Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Dec. 23, 1919.

To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, ELLA STOUT GREEN, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Trenton, in the county of Mercer and State of New Jersey, have invented a new and Improved Auxiliary Stove-Lid, of which the following is a description.
My invention relates to an attachmentfor cook stoves and more particularly relatesto an elongated lid adapted to be temporarily placed on the stove over the fire box, that is to say to cover the large opening which usually is covered in a cookstove by two round stove lids and an intermediate center piece or cross plate supporting the adjacent sides of the two round lids. Frequently the fire in the stove will be found to be located wholly or at least its hottest portion at different parts of the fire box, that is to say the hot area in the fire box may be approximately at the center or adjacent to either end of the fire box.
The prime object of my invention is to i provide an auxiliary stove lid to cover the fire box when the temporary lids and cross plate are removed and formed with a hole approximating in size and shape the opening ordinarily closed by a round stove lid, said auxiliary lid having means whereby it may be adjusted to variously position the hole thereof either at the approximate center of the fire box or above either end thereof according to where the hot area in the fire box may be located.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings forming a part of this specification, it being understood that the drawings are merely illustrative of one example of the invention. V
Figure 1 is a lan view of my improved auxiliary stove 1i showing the same in position on a known form of cookstove shown in partly sectional plan view;
Fig. 2 is a perspective view of my improved stove lid showing the extension member thereof which in practice occupies either a position in the plane of the lid to constitute an extension thereof, or in a position lying on the face of the lid.
In Fig. 1 the letter A designates an ordinary stove in the top of which, over the usual fire box, is an elongated opening indithe opening is closed by a pair of'round V cated by dotted lines B. As is well known stove lids and an intermediate cross plate or center piece, similar to the lids G and cross plate D.
My improved auxiliary stove lid designated generally by the numeral 10 consists for themain part of a flat, elongated, preferably oblong plate, at the approximate center of which is an opening 11 corresponding generally with the. round openings usually closed by a stove lid although the opening 11 is not to be closed except as a cooking utensil (not shown) covers the same. At one end of the plate 10 I provide an extension member 12 so secured thereto as to be moved to a position in the plane of the lid and constituting an extension thereof or lying 011 said plate as indicated in full lines in Fig. 1 and in dotted lines in Fig. 2. Preferably, the extension 12 is hinged along one edge of the lid 10 as at 13. Thus, it will be clear that if there is a local hot area in the fire box at the approximate center and the extension 12 be folded on the lid 10, then said lid may be positioned to locate the opening 11 directly above the central hot area. On the other hand if the hot area in the fire box be adjacent to the front or back of said fire box, the extension 12 will be swung to a position in line with the lid 10 to constitute an extension thereof so that the lid may be then moved lengthwise to position the opening 11 over the hot area at one end of said fire box, the extension 12 serving to cover the opening B at the opposite end from the hot area. Obviously, the plate 10 maybe reversed from the position shown in Fig. 1 which shows the extension 12 at the front of the stove, a reversal serving to dispose the extension at the rear of the stove. In order to prevent lateral displacement of the lid 10 from the adjusted position I provide pins 14 or equivalent protuberances projecting from the under side of the plate sufiiciently to lie adjacent to the side edges of the opening B, so that the plate in being adjusted lengthwise relatively to said opening B will have guided movement and the plate be restrained against lateral displacement.
I would state in conclusion that while the illustrated example constitutes a practical embodiment of my invention, I do not limit myself strictly to the mechanical details herein illustrated, since manifestly the same can be considerably varied without departure from the spirit of the invention as de lined in the appended claims.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent:
1. The combination with a stove having a fire box provided in its top with an elongated opening, of a flat lid to engage the top of a fire box and cover the elongated opening, said lid being provided with an opening for the reception 01" a pot or the-like, depending guide elements secured to the lid near its longitudinal edges and projecting into-the elongated opening to contact with the side walls thereof and serve as guide means for the lid when such lid is shifted longitudinally, and an extension hinged to one end of the lid and adapted to be folded outwardly to lie in the plane of the lidor to be folded back upon the lid, said extension serving to increase the length of the lid when it is in the horizontal position and also adapted to serve as a handle to shift the lid when in an upright position.
2. As an article of manufacture, a fiat lid -to-be arranged upon-the'top of the fire box and cover the elongated opening of the said top, said lid being provided with an opening forthe reception of a pot or the like, said lflSiFHlGll'i-lODQQl opening having a dimension lengthwise of the lid, less than the length of said elongated opening, depending guide elements on the lid and adapted to project into the elongated opening 'to contact with the side walls thereof, and an extension hinged befolded outwardly to lie in the'plane of the lid or to be folded back upon the lid,
said extension serving to increase the length of the lid when it 1s in the horizontal position ELLA STOUT GREEN.
