top that is arranged to serve selectively as a closure for the cooking top or as a cover for th area adjacent the cooking top.
Another object of the invention is the provision of a stove top cover having attachment to the'stove such as to provide for pivotal movement of the cover and also for traversing movement in the direction of the pivot axis.
Another object of the invention is the provision of a stove having a movable top cover, and attaching means therefor affording a pivotal and a traversing movement of the cover; said attaching means comprising a decorative member po- ,Y sitioned adjacent the junction of the 'stove top and appart extending upwardly from the rear thereof, and continuing for substantially the length of said stove parts.
Other objects and advantagesJof the invention will be apparent from the following description, the accompanying drawing, and the appended claims. Irrthe drawing,.
Fig. 1 is a plan view of a-stove constructed in accordance with this invention;
Fig. 2 is a fragmentary side elevational of Fig. l; y
Fig. 3 is a 4fragmentary front elevational view showing the stove cover in an upright or removed position;
Fig.v4 is a fragmentary sectional view taken on the line 4-4 of Fig. 1;
Fig. 5 is enlarged fragmentary sectional view taken on the une 5 5 of Fig. 1; and
Fig. 6 is a view in perspective of a hinge mem- 40. ber shown on a reduced scale.
In the drawing, which discloses a preferred embodiment of the invention, there is illustrated a stove of the type sometimes referred toas a table top stove. As shown, this stove is arranged 45 so the cooking top and the top of the oven view adjacent the cooking top are aligned, that is, they' lie in a plane. By so arranging the stove there isz-afforded an area at the side of the cooking top, and at the same height as the cooking top,
which may be utilized for the same purposes as a table. As this usable space is conveniently located with respect to the stove cooking top a great deal of the work involved in the preparation of food is done on this table area.
A cover is provided for the stove top so that ,s claims. (oi. 126-214) during times that the stove is out of service the cooking top may be closed over. 'Ihis cover and its attachment to the stove are of such character that the cover is not only movable to` expose the cooking top foi` use,- but in addition it is mov- 5 able to a position as a cover andprotection for the table area which is usually a nished permanent part of the stove. In the latter position it provides protection against damage to the stove top during use of this area as a table, and` also provides a work area which is additionally insulated from the heat from the oven beneath.
Although the cover top, when used as a table, is subjected to the same wear and tearand the same danger-lof 1damaging as is the oven top of the stove, this cover member is a relatively inexpensive part which canvv easily be Achanged if it should beccgne damaged in service. Even though the work area above the oven is eifectivelyinsulated against excessive heat loss .this surface may reach a temperature during continued use which is objectionable in a table top. The additional insulation afforded by the cover member thus 'provides a cooler working surface.
Referring now more particularly to the draw- 25 ing, inwhich like characters of reference designate like parts throughout fthe several views thereof, there is shown a stove having a flat top I0 which extends for the full length thereof.
`The left hand portion is arranged as a cooking '30 `top and comprises supporting means for the cooking vessels in the form of a grill I I which is receivefd within a depression I2 of the stove top. Cooking top burners I3 stand .beneath the grill and lare shown provided with control valves I 4 accessible on the stove front. For convenience in description, that area which is occupied by the grilL-and which is defined by the depressed p'ortion I2 of the stove top, will be referred to as the cooking top. The right hand portion of the 'stove contains an oven which is positioned directly beneath the stove top I0. As shown, this oven is accessible through a door I5. A member I6 extends upwardly from the rear of the4 stove top I II.' This member continues for the full length of the stove topand adds to the finished appearance to the stove.
A cover .2D is provided which may selectively restI in the cooking top or on the area adjacent the cooking top, or may stand in an upright po-l sition in which the entire stove top is exposed. As shown the cover is commensurate in size with the cooking top so that when it rests on the stove over the cooking top an effective closure is provided for this part. Being substantially the same size as the cooking top the cover is therefore considerably less in lateral extent than the full length of the stove. As shown, it extends for approximately half the length of the stove top.
The cover 20 is attached to the stove so that it may be raised to an upright position, as indicated at 2I in Fig. 2, when it is desired to use the cooking top. Also, the attaching means is of such character that the cover may stand upright in any desired position within the length of the stove, and may rest on the-stove top above .the oven as a coverfor that portion of the stove top. When in this latter position, which is indicated in dotted outline at 22, the exposed face of the cover member may be used as a table top in the same manner that the stove top is so used.
The cover is of such construction that it serves as a heat insulator. As shown, it is formed of sheet metal and has a iiat plate like central portion 23 with a bounding rim 24 formed as a downturned iiange and terminating ina rolled bead 24. The cover is of suicent depth to provide an air space over the oven top that is adequate to serve as an insulator to prevent the" passage of excessive heat from the oven top to the'cover.
The cover attachment to the stove is by means of a member 25 that extends for substantially the full length of the stove, and which provides for a sliding movement of the cover. 'Ihis member is constructed so that it serves also as a decorative part of the stove structure. As shown, the member 25 is positioned adiacent the junction of the stove top I0 and the memberIS whichV extends upwardly at the rear of the stove top. This member 25 is formed to afford a slidable engagement with hinge members 26 which are in turn pivotally connected to the cover 20 so that the cover may be moved pivotally and may also have a traversing movement. v
' The hinge connection on the cover 20 comprises hinge plates 21 which are positioned at the lateral extremes of the cover. These plates 21- are attached to the cover on the underside thereof so that when the cover is in the position of use as a closure the plates and the attaching parts are out of sight and a smooth working surface is thus gaiforded. As shown, the plates 21 have extending ends 28 which pass through the cover 20 at slots 29. The hinge plate ends 28 are joined to the cover as by being attached to cover brackets 39. As shown, these have end portions 3| which are welded to the cover, and depressed Acenter portions 32 for the reception of screws 33 that extend through the hinge plates. The exposed ends of the hinge plates 21 are formed with eyes 35 which engagehin'ge pins 36 that are carried by the hinge members 26. The spaced plates 21 are arranged so that the eyes 35 stand in axial alignment.
The hinge members 26 are formed of sheet metal and comprise a flat plate portion 38 with upstanding ends 39. These ends are spaced .apart to receive thehinge plates 21 and have i aligned openings for reception of the hinge pins 36. The pins 36 may be in the form of rivets.
Free movement at the hinge axis is provided for by the insertion of a sleeve 31 intermediate the hinge eye 35 and its pin v36.
The sides of the hinge member26 intermediate the upturned ends 39 are turned downwardly and are formed as indicated at 46 to engage guide ways on the attaching member 25. As shown, the guideways 4I are arranged at parallel sides of a plate like front portion 42 of the attaching member 25- which is proportioned so that these guideways stand closely adjacent the stove top I0 and the back member I6. The plate 42 is, in effect, a iillet positioned at the junction Y of the stove top I0 and the back member I6. The exposed part of the member 25 substantially encloses its supporting structure so that the supporting part is not visible. To add to the decorative effect of this part the exposed portion may be made of polished metal and, as-
`formed as a right angle having surface contact with the stove back I6 and the top I0. The sides of the part 45 are bent inwardly as indicated at 46, then outwardly at 41, and again inwardly at 48. These end portions are'received within the similarly shaped guideways 4I of the exposed plate 42. The assembled member-25 may be readily connected to the stove structure as by means of screws 50 which extend through the back member lI6 into threaded engagement with the member 25 as indicated at 5I. This threaded engagement may be accomplished as by weld-l ing nuts 52 in the member 45 prior to assembly and in alignment with the openings 53 at the attaching positions. This same method of assembly may be used 'in the cover brackets 30 as e is indicated at 55.
End pieces 60' are provided at each side of the stove to serve as decorative ends for the attaching member 25, and to serve also as ay means of limiting the travel of the hinge members 26.
As shown, these pieces 60 are held in place by' provision oi screws 6 I. Ifdesired, the pieces .60 may be arranged with openings corresponding to the contour of the attaching member 25 so that in assembly the end pieces may telescope the ends of the attaching member. v
The cover may be easily assembled to the stove by first attaching to the cover the hinge plates 21 and connected hinge members 26. The members 26 are then engaged with the member 25 by a lateral movement of the cover. If desired, the procedure may be'reversed by iirst assembling the hinge members 26 to the mem- Aber-25 and then attaching the, cover 26 to the hinge plates 21. Upon assembling the cover to the stove the end pieces 60 are attached so that the lateral movement of the cover is then lim- -ited and the cover may not be unintentionally lthe closure position over the cooking top to the position as a cover over the work space, or in the reverse direction, itis iirst lifted upwardly to clear the cooking top grill which preferably extends above the stove top surface an amount sufcient to permit cooking utensils to be moved about on it without rubbing on the stove top. As shown, the rearward part or the grill top is sol that the cover will clear this part without being lifted to a steep angular position.
The cover is quite light in weight and is read- 5 ily movable.` If desired, a knob or handle may be provided for lifting the cover. This is not necessary vas the cover bead 24 is formed sufficiently large that the cover may easily be raised by lifting from beneath the bead. By
l not using a handle a smooth and unobstructed working surface is afforded.
While the form of apparatus herein described constitutes a preferred embodiment of the invention, it is to be .understood that the invenparatus, and that changes may be made therein without departing from the scope of the invention which is defined in the appended claims.
