* UNITED m e PATENT EUGENE came, or EDGARD, LOUISIANA V CANDLE-HOLDER.
Specification o'f Iie'ttersEPatent.
Application filed April 15, 1919. Serial No. 290,174.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, EUGENE CAIRE, a citi zen of the United States, residing at Edgard, in the parish of St. John the Baptist and State of Louisiana, have invented new and useful Improvements in Candle-Holders, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to supporting devices for candles and has for its object the provision of a candle stick or holder formed as a base having rising therefrom a standard in the nature of a tubular member spllt at certain points to define a plurality of resilient tongues encircled by a coil spring whereby said tongues will be normally pressed inwardly toward one another to exert a gripping action upon the candle disposed therebetween.
An important object is the provision of a candle holder of this character which will firmly hold candles of all sizes without danger of the candle falling over.
Another object is the provision of a device of this character which will be extremely simple and inexpensive in manufacture, highly efficient and durable in use, and a general improvement in the art.
With the above and other objects and advantages in view, the invention consists in the details of construction to be hereinafter more fully described and claimed, and illustrated in the accompanying drawing, in which Figure 1 is a side elevation of a candle stick constructed in accordance with my invention,
Fig. 2 is a cross sectional view along the line 2-2 of Fig. 1, and
Fig. 3 is a plan view, the candle being shown in section.
Referring more particularly to the drawings, the numeral 10 designates a suitable base which may be formed circular, square, or of any other desired shape and from which rises a standard 11 which is tubular and which may be secured to the base 10 by any suitable means, such as soldering or the like. At its lower portion the standard 11 is, though not necessarily, circular in cross section and from points intermediate its ends this standard is split or cut at diametrically opposite points to provide a plurality of tongues 12. Each tongue is bent outwardly from its juncture with the lower portion of the standard and then bent inwardly and curved and then bent outwardly to provide gripping jaws 13. The extremities of the tongues 12 are bent outwardly upon themselves, as shown at 1 1. j
The candle is designated by the letter A and in order that the jaws 13 of the tongues 12 may grip the candle firmly, I provide a Patented Sept. 2, 1919..
coil spring 15 which surrounds and engages against the outer sides of the jaws 13 beneath the outwardly bent extremities 14:. From this construction it will be seen that the spring 15 will urge the jaws 18 toward one another so that when the candle A is inserted between the jaws the candle will be firmly gripped thereby and held against displacement. Owing to the fact that the lower portion of the standard 11 is cylindrical in form, that is circular in cross section, the lower extremity of the candle will be held by the lower portion of the standard 11 as a socket so that the engagement of the lower end of the candle with the standard together with the gripping of the candle by the inwardly pressed tongues or jaws will very effectively serve to prevent any possible lateral displacement or accidental displacement of the candle.
From the foregoing description and a study of the drawing it will be apparent that I have thus provided an extremely simple candle stick or holder which will be inexpensive in manufacture, which will readily permit the insertion of a candle therewithin and which will effectually serve to hold the candle against any accidental displacement, regardless of the size of the candle.
While I have shown and described the preferred embodiment of my invention, it is of course to be understood that I reserve the right to make such changes in the form, construction, and arrangement of parts as will not depart from the spirit of the invention or the scope of the subjoined claim.
Having thus described my invention, I claim A candle stick comprising a base, a hollow cylindrical standard rising from said base and cut away at its upper end to define a plurality of tongues, said tongues being curved outwardly from their juncture with the body of the standard and then curved inwardly. to define gripping jaws, the extremities of said tongues being bent outwardly upon themselves to define loops, and a coil spring arranged in circular form and disposed Within said loopswhereby to urge said tongues inwardly toward one another for resilient gripping action upon the 10 candle disposed therebetween.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature.
EUGENE CAIRE.
