LNYENTOR X I v wlTNEs% 5. 'Wfi ATTORNEY Patented May 10, 1932 ERVIN I. WEBB, OI BEAUMONT, TEXAS PACKING EXTRACTOZR Application filed April 11,
This invention relates to new and useful improvements in packing extractors and has for its primary object the provision of a device of the above stated character whereby packing may be quickly and easily extracted from inaccessible packing glands and which may be positioned and operated from various angles relative to the packing gland.
Another object of this invention is the provision of a packing extractor of the above stated character which will be simple durable and efficient, and which may be manu factured and sold at a comparatively low cost.
With these and other objects in View as will become more apparent as the description proceeds, the invention consists in certain novel features of construction, combination and arrangement of parts as will be hereinafter more fully described and claimed.
For a complete understanding of my invention, reference is to be had to the follow- 5 description and accompanying drawings 1n which:
Figure 1 is a side elevation illustrating a packing extractor constructed in accordance with my invention.
Figure 2 is a similar view taken at right angles to Figure 1.
Figure 3 is a sectional view illustrating the holder for the extracting element.
Figure 4 is a sectional view taken on the F line H of Figure 2.
Figure 5 is a plan View illustrating the extracting element.
Figure 6 is a side elevation partly in section of a device having packing glands with my invention positioned to remove the packing from a gland.
Referring in detail to the drawings, the numeral 1 indicates a holder constructed from a tubular member of any bendable metal or alloid capable of being bent at various angles to facilitate the insertion of one end into a packing gland which may be inaccessible. The holder 1 has a finger piece 2 secured thereto adjacent one end whereby a person may easily obtain a grip 1930. Serial No. 443,458.
on the holder for extracting the same from a gland.
An extracting element 3 preferably constructed of flexible wire or the like is slidably mounted in the holder 1 and has one end a bent to form a finger ring or grip 4 while the other end is bent in the form of a cork screw or packing gripping portion 5 which has its free end pointed to facilitate the inv...
packing 6 from an inaccessible gland 7 the gripping portion 5 is positioned adjacent to the end of the holder 1 and both are shoved into the gland as shown in Figure 6with the sharp end of the portion 5 piercing the packing and by turning the extracting eleit ment within the holder, the portion 5 will feed itself into the packing and thereby obtain a firm grip thereon. The operator gripping the holder 1 by the finger grip :2 in one hand and the finger ring 4 in the other hand may easily pull or extract the desired packing from the gland. It will be noted that the holder 1 will direct the flexible extracting element to a proper point within a gland and obviate any possibility of the flexible extracting element 3 from bending out of shape or from becoming lodged in the gland prior to engaging the packing.
While I have shown and described the preferred embodiment of my invention, it will be understood that minor changes in construction, combination and arrangement of parts may be made Without departing from the spirit and scope of the invention as claimed.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim is:
A packing extractor comprising a bend able tubular guide member, a plate formed on said member adjacent one end to provide a finger piece for permitting a person to obtain a grip on the member, and a flexible and semi-rigid extracting element extending through the tubular member and slidable and rotatable relative thereto and having one end bent in spiral shape for engaging into a packing during the rotation of the extracting element, the other end of said extracting element bent to provide a finger 5 ring and located adjacent the finger plate of the tubular member.
In testimo ture.
ny whereof, afii x ln y "ERVIN 'F.
