Description

LQUS J. SOLBERG, F MALTA, MONTANA.
FOLDING CLAMP.
To all whom it may concern:
Beit known that I, LoUis J. Sowieso, a
citizenl 'ofy the United States, residing at ,lVIalta, in the county of Phillips and State fof. Montana, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Folding Clamps;
I 4and I dohereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in ifthe f art to which it appertains to make and use Vthe saine.
My invention has for its object to pro- `vide an extremely simple and highly eiiicient clamp intended for general use, but especially adapted for holding parts of a harness while stitching the same.
To the above end, generally stated, the invention consists ofthe novel devices and combinations .of devices hereinafter described and defined in the claims.
, InI Ithe laccompanying drawings, which illustrate the invention, like characters indi- "oate like parts throughout the several views.
Referring to the drawings,
-Figure lis a view illustrating the im-v proved clanip in an operative position by means of 'full lines and in a folded position by means of broken lines; and
F ig. 2 is a side elevation of the improved clamp, as illustrated by means of full lines in Fig 1.
The numeral?, indicates a pair -of iiat basemembers connected by a hinge 4r in a `manner to permit said members to be spread out 'fiat' end to end, or folded, one upon the other, as shown in Fig. 1. A pair of jaws liris connected, one to each of the base members 3 by hinges 6. These hinges 6 connect the jaws 5 to the base members 3, outward of their inner ends, in a manner to permit said jaws to be set in converging operative positions, or folded outward into fiat engageinent with the respective base members, as shown in Fig. 1.
A thumb nut-equipped draw bolt 7 is 1nserted through a pair of alined bores in the jaws 5, for drawingsaid jaws together, as shown in Fig. 1, or upon the work held therebetween. In this position of the jaws 5, washers 8 are preferably applied to the draw bolt 7 under the head and nut thereof. l'n the outer face of each jaw 5, is a shallow rectangular box-holding recess 9 located outward of the bolt 7. The jaws 5 are somewhat longer than the base members 3 and Specification of Letters Patent.
the same.

Application filed May 17, 1918. Serial No.'235,151.
when folded thereupon, owing to their hinged relation thereto, bring the box-holding recesses 9 outward of the outer ends of said base members. l 1
Formed in each base member 3, outward of the respective hinge 6, is a rectangular transverse opening 10.' These openings 10, when the base members 3 are folded, one upon the other, are alined to aiford a receptacle that is closed by the jaws v5, when folded onto said base members. Also formed in. each base member 3, outward of the respective opening 10, is a bore 11, that is alined with the bores in the jaws 3 when said jaws are folded upon the base members, to receive the draw bolt 7, and thereby hold the clamp folded, as shown by dottedlines in Fig. l. An open box 12 is placed between the jaws 5, when folded, with its bottom and upper edges seated within the recesses 9. Obviously, one of the jaws 3 affords a cover for the box 12 and vthe other thereof hol'ds said box thereagainst, while the recesses 9 securely hold the box against endwise or lateral movements, with respect to the jaws.
As previously stated, the improved folding clampis especially adapted for use in holding parts of a harness while stitching In this use of the clamp, the operatorfmay firmly and securely hold the clamp in a convenient'position for his work by sitting upon a chair or bench with the jaws of the clamp projecting upward between his legs and with the outer projecting end portions of the base members 3. The
receptacle 10-10 and box 12 may be used 'for rholding tools, rivets, etc.
What I claim is 1. A folding clamp comprising a pair of hinge-connected base members, a pair of cooperating jaws hinged, one to each' of the base members, and means forsecuring the jaws in operative positions, the jaws when in operative positions being adapted to hold the base members against folding movement.
2. A folding clamp comprising a pair of hinge-connected base members adapted to be folded, one upon the other, a pair of c0- operating jaws hinged, one to each of the base members and adapted to be folded onto the respect-ive base members, and a draw bolt connecting the jaws, each of said base members having a transverse opening, said openings .arranged to be brought into alineinent, when thebbase members are folded one base members, and a draw bolt connecting the jaws and extending through alined bores foianedtherein, each of said base members having a bore that is alined with the bores 4in the jaws, when the clamp is folded, to
receive the draw bolt for holding said clamp folded.. V j j '4. A folding clamp comprising a pair of hinge-connected base members arranged to be folded, one upon the other, a pair of cooperatingjaws hinged, one to each of the base members and arranged to be folded thereupon, and means for securing the jaws yin operative positions.
` 5. A folding clamp comprising a pair of hingeiconnected base members adapted to be' folded onev upon the other, a pair of cooperatingv jaws hinged, one to each of the base members and adapted to be foldedY onto the respective basemembers, and a draw bolt connecting the jaws and extending through alined bores formed therein, each of said base members having a transverse opening, said openings arranged to be brought into alinement, when the base members are folded one upon the other, to a'brd a receptacle that is closed tne jaws when folded onto the respective base members,
each of said base members having a bore that is alined with the bores in the jaws when the clamp is folded to receive the draw bolt and thereby hold said clamp folded.2A
6. A folding clamp comprising a pair of hinge-connected base members, each having a transverse opening kand arranged to ,be folded, oneupon the other, a pair; of` cooperating jaws hinged, one to veach ofthe members and `arranged to vbe folded. upon the respective base members, said openings arranged to be brought 'into alinement when the base members are folded, one upon the other, to afford a reeeptaelethatis 'closed by the jaws when folded onto the. respective base members and means for securing the jaws in either operative or foldedposition."
7. A folding clamp comprising apair'of hinge-connected base members, a pair ofco-E operating jaws hinged, one to the intermediate portion of each of the base members, and means for securing the jaws; in
operative position. l j
In testimony whereof, I aflix my signature 1n presence of two witnesses.
