To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, HARRY W. YOUNG, a citizen of the United States, residing at Whitehall, in the county of Muskegon and State of Michigan, have invented new and useful Improvements in Chocks, of which the following is a specication. j
'lhis invention relates to devices fastened to the deck of a vessel and having jaws between which a cable, hawser or the like is adapted to be passed.
The invention has for its object to provide a novel and improved device of the kind stated, and one with which is combined a Hagstad' holder as will appear more fully hereinafter.

Referring specifically to the drawings, 10 denotes the bow of a vessel, on which are mounted two chocks 11 and 12, respectively, the same being metal blocks having jaws between which a cable, hawser, or the like is adapted to be passed. The two chock blocks are joined at one end and .extend divergingly therefrom to run parallel to the sides of the vessel. The outer ends of the chock blocks are apertured for fasteners 13 whereby they are secured at these ends to the deck or other part of the vessel. The inner or meeting ends of the chock blocks are provided with matching hinge knuckles, the knuckles of the block 11 being shown at 11a. rllhe block l2 has a single knuckle 12a seating between the lmuckles 11a. The knuckles have alined apertures to receive a standard or stanchion 14 which is hollow, thus forming a socket into which a Hag stall 15 may 4 be inserted and held, as shown in Fig. 1.
The bottom end of the stanchion is closed and fastened down to the deck or other part of the vessel by a screw or other suitable means 16 passing through said end as shown Benre applying the fasteners 13, the blocks 11 and 12 are set at the desired angle, and they are held stationary upon applying said fasteners. The stanchion 14 passing through the knuckles of the blocks provides a pivotal connection therebetween, thus `enabling them to be readily set at the desired angle.
The stanchion 14 is tapered toward the bottom so that when the fastener 16 is applied, itis wedged tightly in the alincd apertures of the hinge knuckles 11a and 12a, and the chock blocks are rmly secured to successfully withstand the strain to which they are subjected when in use.
In Figs. 4 and 5 are `shown two chock blocks 17 and 18, respectively, also pivotally connected at one end and extending divergingly therefrom, with their outer ends fastened down as shown at 16a. The block 13 has a single hinge lmuckle 18@L fitting between knuckles 17a on the block 17. The top one of the knuckles 17 a is continued upward to form a tubular stanchion 19 having at the top a side socket member 19a. On top of the stanchion seats aring 20 having a side socket member 20 lying in a common plane with the socket member 19a. The ring 20 may be rotated to place the socket members 19a and 20EL divergingly at any desired angle, and as the socket members are designed to receive the horizontal rods or bars of a railing, it will be seen that the latter is readily adjustable to extend parallel to the sides of the vessel.
The stanchion 19 is hollow and receives a lagstai holder 21 similar to the holder 14 hereinbefore described, said holder also passing through the ring 20, and thus holding the latter to the stanchion.
Fig. 6 Ashows a combined flagstad holder and railing support. This device comprises a flat base 22 from which rises a hollow standard 23 on top of which seats a ring 24. The ring 24 and the top of the standard 23 have socket members 25 and 26, respectively, similar to the members 19et and 20a, and for the same purpose.
The standard 23 is hollow to receive a flagstaif holder 27. The device is secured to the deck or other part of the vessel by fas teners passing through apertures in the base 22.
