J. D. HA'MAN.
PIPE WRENCH. APPLICATION FILED SEPT. 25. I918.
Patented July 1, 1919.
INVENTOR WITNESSES ATTOH N EY JOHN D. HAMAN, 0F WILMINGTON, DELAWARE.
PIPE-WRENCH.
mosses.
Specification of Letters Intent.
Patented duly 1, 1919.
Application filed September 25, 1918. Serial No. 255,658.
To all whom it may concern Be itk'nown that 1, JOHN" D. HAMAN, a
citizen of the United States, residing at.
"Wilmington, in the county 'of New Castle and State of Delaware, have invented cerwin new and useful Improvements in Pipe- Wrenches, of which the following is aspecification.
This invention relates to tools of the wrench type, and more particularly to wrenches designed for operating in connection with pipeand like work.
The principal object of the invention is the provision of novel operating means whereby the movable jaw may be easily and conveniently adjusted to the work.
A further purpose of the invention is the provision of meanswhereby the adjusting nut may be rotated from the grip or handle end of the wrench and by the same hand employed for grasping and manipulating the wrench, thereby leaving the other hand free for holding the work or for any other desired purpose.
The invention also has for its object to provide a wrench involving a simple and durable structure and which while admitting of adjustment by the same hand operating the wrench, also allows for the ratcheting erence characters.
movement peculiar to pipe wrenches.
The drawing illustrates a preferred embodiment of the invention, however, it is to be understood that in adapting the same to meet differentconditions, various changes in the form, proportion, and minor details of construction may be resorted to without departing from the nature of the invention as claimed hereinafter.
In the drawings Figure 1 is a view in elevation of a pipe wrench embodying'the invention.
Fig. 2-.is a transverse section on thehne 2-2 of Fig. 1 looking to the right as indicated by the arrows. i
Fig. 3 is a transverse section on the l1n e 3 -3 of Fig. 1 looking'to'the left as indicated by the arrows.
Corresponding and like parts are referred to in the following description and indicated in all the views of the drawings bylike ref The wrench comprises a handle member or shank 1 which is widened at one end and toothed to provide the fixed jaw 2. The opposite end of the shank or handle member is reduced and receives a grip or handle 3.
A head frame 4 is mounted upon the member 1 and is pivoted thereto by a suitable fastening 5. The framed has a transverse slot 6 to receive a gear nut 7. A longitudinal opening is formed in the head frame 4 and receives the shank S'Which is provided at its outer end with a jaw 9. The element 9 constitutes the movable or adjust-able jaw and its shank 8 is fiat and its opposite edges are formed with toothed segments which mesh with the thread of the ear nut 7. The frame 4 is also provided wit 1 a second longitudinal opening through which the shank or handle member 1 passes. A flat spring 10. is secured at one end to the member 1 and has its opposite end entering the opening of the frame 4 and exerting an outward pressure thereon to hold the movable parts in predetermined position;
A shaft 11 is disposed parallel with the hand grasping and manipulating the wrench.
The forward end of the shaft 11 is provided with a pinion 15 which is in mesh with the outer toothed portion of the gear nut 7. The ends of the pinion 15 are made rounding so as to allow for the pivotal movements of the head frame 4. The shaft 11 is enlarged a short distance from the pinion 15 as indicated at 16 to form an annular shoulder and the pinion in the head frame 4 through which the forward end of the shaft 11 passes is enlarged to receivethe enlarged portion 16 of the shaft as shown most clearly in Fig. 1. y
When adjusting the wrench embodying the invention, the hand grasping the grip or handle 13 may be utilized for rotating the gear wheel 14 and the movement of such gear wheel is transmitted to the shaft 11 and to the gear nut 7, whereby the movable jaw 9 is adjusted awayfrom or toward the fixed jaw 2 when adapting the wrench for operation upon the work in hand. It will thus be understood that the tool is of such a nature asto admit of one hand of the workman being free for any desired purpose while the remaining hand is used both for operating the wrench'and for adjusting the same to the work. It is to be understood that sufiicient play is provided with between the shaft 11 and its bearings to allow for pivotal movement of the head frame 4 so that the wrench may ratchet in a manner well understood.
I The foregoing description and the drawings may be referred to as what may be considered the preferred, or approved form of my invention. It is to be understood that I may make such changes in the construction, arrangement, and combination of parts, materials, dimensions, et cetera, as may prove expedient and fall within the scope of the vappended claims.
Having thus fully described my invention,
what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. A wrench, comprising a shank having a fixed jaw, a frame pivoted on the shank, a movable jaw having a threaded shank slidable in the said frame, a gear nut mounted in thefranie and receiving the said threaded shank, a shaft mounted on the shank of the fixed jaw, a pinion at the front end of the shaft rotatable therewith and in mesh with the gear nut, and operating means at the rear end of the shaft and including an element adjace'nt the grip or handle end of the wrench for imparting rotary movement to the shaft.
2. A wrench, comprising a shank having a fixed jaw, a frame pivoted on the shank, a movable jaw having a threaded shank slidable in the said frame, a gear nut mounted in the frame and receiving the said threaded shank, a shaft mounted at its forward end in the pivoted frame and at its rear end on the shank of'the fixedjaw, a pinion at the forward end of the shaft in mesh with the gear nut, and operating means at the rear end of the shaft and including an element adjacent the grip or handle end of the wrench for imparting rotary movement to the shaft.
3. A wrench comprising a shank having a fixed jaw, a head frame mounted upon the shank and pivoted thereto, a movable jaw having a shank adjustable in the head frame and provided with thread sections, a gear nut mounted in the head frame and engaging the thread sections of the shank of the movable jaw, a shaft mounted at one end in the head frame and in mesh with the gear nut, and gearing connectin the rear end of the shaft with the shank o the fixed jaw and including a manually operable element adjacent the grip'or handle end of the shank.
4. A wrench comprising a shank having a fixed jaw, a head frame mounted upon the shank and pivoted thereto, a movable jaw having a shank slidable in the head frame and provided with thread sections, a gear nut mounted in the head frame and cooperating with the thread sections of the shank of the adjustable jaw, a tail frame mounted upon the handle end of th main shank, a shaft mounted in the head and tail frame, a pinion at the forward end of the shaft 1n mesh with the gear nut, a pinion on the rear end of the shaft, and a gear wheel mounted on the main shaft adjacent the grip or handler end thereof and in meshing relation with the teeth of the pinion at the rear end of the shaft.
In testimony whereof I afiix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
JOHN D. HAMAN.
