Description

C. M. FOSTER.
WRENCH.
APPLICATION FILED APR. 3. 191a Patented July 9, 1918.
CLARENCE M. FOSTER, OF TOLEDO, OHIO.
WRENCH.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented July 9, 1918.
Application filed April 3, 1918. Serial 110. 226,460.
To all whom it may concern.
Be it known that I, CLARENCE M. Fos'rnn, a citizen of the United States, residing at Toledo, in the county of Lucas and State of Ohio, have invented a new and useful Wrench, of which the following is a specification.
It is the object of this invention to supply a wrench of novel form, provided at one end with cooperating jaws, and provided at the other end with means for manipulating one jaw, the movable jaw and the means for manipulating the same being movable longitudinally of the handle of the wrench.
It is within the province of the disclosure to improve generally and to enhance the utility of devices of that type to which the present invention appertains.
Changes falling within the skill of a mechanic may be made within the scope of what is claimed, without departing from the spirit.
In the accompanying drawings Figure 1 shows a longitudinal section, a wrench constructed in accordance with the invention, parts appearing in elevation;
Fig. 2 is a side elevation of the wrench shown in Fig. 1;
Fig. 3 is a cross section taken on the line 3-3 of Fig. 1.
In carrying out the invention, as shown in Figs. 2 and 3, there is provided a tubular handle 1 which is flattened at one end as shown at 2.
A nut 3 abuts against the other end of the handle 1 and includes a reduced neck 4 mounted to rotate in the handle. The neck of the nut 3 has a circumscribing groove 5. A retaining pin 6 is mounted in the handle 1 and projects into the groove 5, the construction being such that, although the nut 3 can rotate, a longitudinal movement of the nut will not be possible. The neck 4 of the nut 3 is provided with a threaded socket 7 The numeral 8 denotes generally a plunger including a stem 9 located in the handle 1, the stem being threaded as shown at 10 into the socket 7 of the nut. A head 11 is c, rried by the stem 9 of the plunger 8 and is mounted to slide in the flattened portion 2 of the tubular handle 1. The outer end of the head 11 carries a movable jaw 12 provided with an opening 14 which is shaped to receive the nut, bolt or other objects which is to be turned. A recess 15 is formed in the head 11 and communicates with the opening 14:.
A fixed jaw 16 is disposed in the recess 15 and is supplied at its outer end with a notch 17, which, coacting with the opening 14 in the movable jaw 12, receives the nut or other object which is to be turned. A rivet 18, or like securing device is mounted in the handle 1 and passes through the jaw 16 to hold the latter fixed.
It will be obvious that when the nut 3 is rotated, the plunger 8 will be moved endwise, the movable jaw 12 cooperating with the fixed jaw 16.
The device forming the subject matter of this application is of exceeding simple construction, but will be found to be efficient under circumstances which call for a small, light, portable wrench having a movable jaw at one end, adapted to slide longitudinally of the handle, and provided at its opposite end with means for manipulating the aw.
Having thus described the invention, what is claimed is In a wrench, a tubular handle a nut at one end of the handle; means for holding the nut on the handle for rotation but against longitudinal movement; a plunger threaded at one end into the nut and provided with a. movable jaw disposed atthe other end of the handle, the jaw having an opening; a fixed jaw in the opening; and means for securing the fixed jaw to the handle.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own, I have hereto afiixed my signature in the presence of two witnesses.
CLARENCE M. FOSTER.
