To aZZ whom tf/ nay concern.'
Beit 'known` that 1, ABRAHAM J. Loma, a
citizen of the United States, and a resident of the: city of New York, borough of' the Bronx, in the county of Bronx and State of New York, have invented a` new and l[mproved separable Button, of which the fol- 'A lowing is a full, clear, and exact description.
The invention relatesv -to buttons such as are usedl mainly on garments and other wearing apparel, and its object is to provide a new and improved separable button` arranged to permit the manufacturer .or user to conveniently fasten the button -members bil together and in position on the cloth, leather,
rubberor other material of the article on lwhich the button is used, or to disconnect the said membersfor removal of the button use of an ordinary pointed shank as one of u the members of the separable button thereby r yreducingV the cost of producing the button and dispensing with expensive machinery and highly skilled labor in the manufacture of the button. Another object is to provide va separable button which is very simple and durable in construction and not liable accidentally to become detached from the garment or other article on which it is used.
With these and other objects in view, the invention consists of certain novel features of constructionas hereinafter shown and described and then specifically pointed out in the claims. j
A practical embodiment of the invention is represented-h1 the accompanying drawings forming a art of this specification, in which similar c aracters of reference indi'- cate corresponding par-ts in all the views. i

v'The head 10 is' preferably made of aV plastic;
material adapted to set and harden in a suitableinold which gives it the desired shape, and in the back or under side of the button is embedded a cup-shaped member 15 proatv vided With an annular crimped flange 16 emf bedded in the plastic material of the head While the latterl is formed in the mold so that the 'cup-shaped member 15 is iirmly heldin vposition in the head with the bottom 17 of the cup-shaped member 15 centrally at the under side of the head. The bottom 17' is vprovided with a central struck-upportion 18 extending outwardly and adapted to be sea-ted lon one' face of the material 13, as 'plainly shown in Fig. 1. r1`he struck-up portion 1 8' has an inwardly extending annular gripping jaw 19 into which extends the base end 20 of the shank 11 to securely fasten the said shank to the cup-shaped body 15. The bottom 17 of the cup-shaped member 15 is further provided at diametrically opposite points With struck-up lugs 21 bent inwardly andtow'ard eachother to forman abutment j for the end of the base 20ct the shank 11 to prevent lthe latter v from being accidentally y pushed inward when forcing the shank 11 lthrough the material 13. The cup-shaped member 15 is adapted to be closed by a cover 22 preferably made cup shape and snugly fitted with its mouth into the cup-shaped member 15, as plainly indicated in Fig. 1.
The portion of the cover 22 projecting outward from the cup-shaped member 15 is embedded in the plastic material of the head 10 and aids the cup-shaped member 15 to hold the latter securely in position-'in the' plastic materialof the head 10.
' The coperating or engaging member' 12 is formed of a cup-shaped bod 25 provided at l its bottom 26 with a centra opening. 27 for Fig. 5 is a perspeetive view et the disk fthe passage of the pointed end 28 cli the in Fig. 1, and gripping the shank 11 adjacent, the pointed end thereof. The edge of the disk '30 is held inl an annular groove 32 formed inthe body 25 adjacent the bottom 26 thereof. A closing plate 35 serves to close the mouth of the body 25 and its edge is held in an annular. groove 36 formed in the outer end of the body 25. It will be noticed that this closing plate 35 limits the movement of the shank 11 into the member 12.
In using the separable button, the head 10 and its shank 11 are detached from the cooperating member 12 to permit the user to force the shank 11 through the material 13 of the article on which the button is used. The coperating. member l2 is now forced into the pointed end ofthe shank by engagingthe point 28 with the central aperture 27 and finally forcing the pointed end up between the jaws 31 which are then bent outwardly andfirmly grip the shank at oppol site sides thereof. It will be noticed that the bottom 26 of the coperating member 12 l is seated against the inner face of the material 13 thus holding the button securely in position on the material and with the under side of the head 10 slightly spaced from the outer face of the material to permit convenient buttoning of the head of the button with sired to remove the button from the material 13 it will be necessary for the user to take hold of the head 10 with one hand' and of the member 12 with the other hand and then forcibly turn the member 12 on the shank 11 and exert a strong pull on the said member to gradually disengage the aws 31 from the shank 11. The button can then be reused if desired. It will be noticed that by the arrangement described an ordinary shank 11 is used' thereby reducing the cost of producing the button to a minimum. It will also be noticed that the holding member of the shank 11 is securely fastened in place in a plastic material forming the ornamental head of the button, and the shank is securely fastened in such holding member to prevent the parts of the head from accidentally comin apart.`
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent 1. A separable button, comprisin a head, a plain shank having at one-end' a ase and having the other end. pointed, -a gripping member carried by the head for gripping the base of the shank to hold it in the head, and a coperating member made'hollow and having an entrance for the pointed end of the said shank, the said coperating member being provided withinterior gripping means gripping the entering end' of the shank.
2. In a button, a head of plastic material, a shank holding member havin a flange embedded in thel said head, the sa1d member being provided with central retaining means, and av shank having a base and a pointed end, the said base being held' in the said retaining means.
3. In a button, a head of plasticmaterial, a shank holding member-.having a iange embedded in the said head, the said member being provided with central retaining means and ashank having a base and' a pointed end, the said base being held in the said retaining-means, and a cupshaped covering member fitting over the said shank holding member and embedded in thesaid head.-
4. In a button, a head of plastic material, a shank-holding member on the under side of the said head and having a cup-shaped body providedjwith a crimped ange embedded in the said head', the said vholding' member having a central portion projecting outward from the under side of the said head, the said central portion having struckup gripping jaws extending inwardly, and a plain shank having its base end extending into the central portion and' gripped by the said jaws.
5. In a button, a head of plastic material, a shank-holding member on the under side of the said head and having a cup-shaped body provided with a crimped flange embed'ded in the said head, the said holding member having a central portion projecting outward from theunder side of the said head, the said central portion having struckoperating engaging member adapted to engage thel pointed end of the said shank, the
. said engaging member having a cup-shaped body provided in its bottom with a central entering aperture forthe passage of the said shank, a flat Adisk held in the said body ad- -.jacent the bottom thereof, the disk having gripping jaws gripping the said shank, sai(T jaws being struck-up from the central pora member secured' to the head and having tion of the disk, and a closing plate closing downwardly and inwardly extending, rip- 10 the open end of the body, the said body beping members for engaging the base o the ing provided with annular grooves of which shank and upwardly and inwardly extend- 5 one is engaged by the edge of the said disk ing members forming an abutment for the' andthe other by the edge of the said plate. base of the shank.
7. In a button a head, a shank having a base @mi and having its other end pointed, ABRAHAM J, LoBAn.
