To all whom t may concern:

f Be it known that I, STANLEY NoviNsKv, citizen of Poland, residing at Braznell, 1n the county of Fayette and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Combs and Brushes, of which the following is a specification.

This invention relates to hair dressing articles generally, having particular refer ence to a device inl which a comb and brush arecombined in a single unitary structure. j

The invention has for a general object jto provide a novel and improved means for mounting the comb on the back of the brush whereby both a fine anda coarse comb can be carried by the brush back in a manner to be readily alternated in use with the brush or with one another.

A further object is to provide a means of the kind referred to in which the two combs are concealed within the back and can be readily projected to operative position when desired.

For further comprehension of the invention, and of the objects and advantages thereof, reference will be had to the following description and accompanying drawings, and to the appended claims in which the various novel features of the invention are more particularly set forth.

As here shown my improved device comprises a brush element consisting of a back 10 having a handle extension 11 and provided with the usual bristles 12. Within this back 10, on the rear side thereof, is a shallow recess 13 which is adapted to accommodate the combs when the latter are not in use, this recess extending from side to side of the back.

The combs are shown at 15 and 16 respectively, the comb 15 being fine toothed, and the comb 16 having coarser teeth. The backs of these combs are in the form of eyes 15 and 16 respectively in which are rigidly fixed hinge pintles 17 and 18 which extend along adjacent opposite sides of the brush back 10 and are suitably journaled at their ends in the latter. one end thereof, are coiled the springs 19 and 20 respectively which are accommodated in suitable sockets 21 and 22 in the back 10 and which connect at one end to the pintles and at oppositeends to the back 10 and eXert a turning moment on the pintles acting to swing the combs out of the recess 13.

When not in use the combs 15, 16 are folded over upon one another in the recess 13, as indicated in dotted lines in Fig. 3, and are held in this position by a hinged cover plate4 25. In order to allow ofthe combs lyng flat in the recess l3'their hinge axes are preferably laterally offset as. shown in Fig. 3. The cover is hinged as at 26 adjecentthehandle 11, the opposite end beingr adapted to be engaged by a latch constructed as follows:

Slidable in a suitable longitudinal boring in the back 10is a pin 27 having a rigid hook 28V projecting upwardly between its ends through a slot 29 in the back 10 and engaging a keeper 30 in a recess 31 in the under side of the cover. A coiled expansion spring 32 which is seated in a socket 33 in the end of the back 10, and bears outwardly against the head of the pin 27, normally retains the latter in position with the hook 28 engaging over the keeper 30.

For convenience in closing the cover 25 down on the combs 15,16 when the latter are swung into the recess 13, I provide the pin 27 with an inwardly projecting finger 35 which may be engaged over the adjacent end of the said combs by pushing inwardly on the pin, thusholding the combs against the action of the springs 19 and 20 while the cover is being closed. When the pin 27 is then released the finger 35 disengages from the combs, the parts being preferably so proportioned that an inward movement of pin 27, suiiicient to release thecover, will not be sufficient to cause the finger to reach the combs. The cover plate 25 may have a mirror 37 set thereinto.

It is believed that the manner of use of my improved device will be apparent from the above description. By pushing inwardly on pin 427 the cover 25 is released allowing the springs 19 to swing the combs 15 and 16 outward to the position shown in full lines.

l. A device of the class described comprising a brush including a back having a recess therein, a comb hinged to said back in said recess, a cover plate normally covering said comb, a spring normally urging said comb out of said recess, and a lock engaging said cover plate, and a device independent of said cover plate engaging said comb to hold it against the action of said spring.

2. A device of the class described comprising a brush including a back having a recess therein, a comb hinged to said back in said recess, a cover plate normally covering said comb, a spring normally urging said comb out of said recess, and a lock engaging said cover plate, and a device independent of said cover plate for engaging said comb to hold it against the action of said spring, said device being carried by one of the elements of the lock to move from operative position as the lock moves to operative position.

3. A device of the class described comprising a brush including a back having a recess therein, a pair of combs hinged to sai-d back at opposite sides of said recess, springs normally acting to swing said combs to position with the teeth thereof projecting side- Wise from the said back, and a removable cover plate adapted to hold said combs against the'action oisaid springs.

4.
