Be it known that I, GENJi Nacer, subject of Japan, residing at No. 3T Nagasaka Machi, Azabu Ku, rlokyo, Japan, have invented new and .useful Improvements in Knockdown Packing-Boxes, of which the following is a specification.

This invention relates to a box for packing goods, constructed and fastened together without using any nail. The obj ect' of this invention is to obtain a packing box which is strong but can very easily be taken to pieces, and which can be safely sealed so that unauthorized opening can effectively be prevented.

To describe my invention fully reference being had to the accompanying drawings,

(1) (1) are planks forming the longer sides and (2) (2)are those forming the shorter sides. (3) is the lid and (4) the bottom. The four sides are fastened together by means of a special kind of latches, and are then placed betweeen the bottom and the lid which are fastened by means of bolts. Although the sides are latched together by a very simple means, the whole is so constructed that they cannot be taken to pieces unless after the removal'of the lid.

The device for fastening the sides is as follows Nail metal pieces (6) to side planks (2) (2) on the inside at any desired places on the edges which are to be joined to side planks (l) (l). pieces (6) (6) are bent at right as at.(5), and project a little out of the edge of the side planks. On the inside of the side planks (l) (l) at places corresponding to the metal pieces (6) (6) are nailed metal plates (9) 9) each of which is perforated with a hole (7) to receive the head (5) of a metal piece The heads of the metal (6). The hole (7) is narrowed downward as at (8), the narrow part being just wide enough to admit the metal piece (6). The side planks (l) (l) are hollowed out under the metal plates (9) (9) as at (l0) to obtain spaces for the heads (5) of the metal pieces (6) to move in.

Now, if we insert the heads (5) of the metal pieces (6) into the corresponding holes (T) (7) of the metal plates (9) (9), and push down the planks (2) (2), the metal pieces (6) (6) will get into the slits (8) (8), and the heads (5) will be firmly caught by the plates (9) (9), and the body of a box is constructed.

The lid and bottom are strengthened by i cross-pieces (11) and so are the side planks (l) (1). The cross-pieces of the lid and bottom are cut off at their both ends as at .(12) (12), and the notches (12) thus formed are lined with metal plates (13). The bottom of the notches (12) and the lid and bottom are bored through to receive bolts (14).

. The body of the box constructed as aforesaid is placed on the bottom, the bolts to fasten the bottom and the lid being within the side planks (l) (l), and when it is packed with goods the lid is placed thereon and fastened screwing down nuts (15). At the upper end of each bolt (14), just above the nut (l5) there is a hole, through which a cord is to be passed and sealing made in any desired manner. Thus, it will be impossible to open the box without breaking the seals.

According to my invention, it is preferable to. make the planks (2) forming the shorter sides a little broader than the planks forming the longer sides, because if all the side planks are of the same breadth, when the lid and bottom are tightly fastened there is tendency of their curving out, and thus the side planks (2) will not be fastened as tightly as the side planks (l).

I wish it to be understood that modifications may be introduced into this invention without departing from the spirit thereof. For instance, in the devices for latching the side planks together, the metal piece may not be a metal plate having its head bent at right angle, but any enlargement or projection will do for such head with a corresponding hole in the metal plate (9) which would admit the head and then catch it. So also, the device for fastening the lid and the bottom may be other than the one herein described, the main point of this device being to tighten the bolts Within notches so that the bolt ends do not project beyond the box surface.

To sum up, my box is easy to construct and also very easy to take it into pieces, and as no nail is used, it can be opened Without damaging any part of it. And as it can be put to pieces very easily and Without any damage to it, it can be used for transportation purpose over and over again. Moreover,

las it can not be opened Without unscrewing the nuts of the bolts and as it is sealed above the nuts, there is no fear of its being opened by any unauthorized person. Further as the bolt ends and nuts thereon do not project beyond the box surface, they being contained Within notches, no inconvenience will be felt in handling it, nor no unnecessary space will be occupied in piling a number of such boxes.

I claim:

l. lA packing box constructed without using any nails characterized by fastening` with metal pieces from inside, the four side planks in such a Way that the .side planks can easily be taken to pieces but not from the outside; placing lthe body of the box thus formed between a lid and a bottom, both of which have several notches at their edges; lining said notches With metal plates through which bolts are passed from the -bottom to the lid along the inner sides of side planks; and securing the boltends With nuts so that the bolt ends and the nut-s screwed thereon are contained within the notches and can be sealed therein, substantially as and for the purposes hereinbefore set forth.

2. A packing box constructed Without using any nails characterized by fixing metal fittings having a head such as (6) or the like to a pair of side planks at places where theyare to be connected with the other pair.

A packing Abox constructed Without using any nails characterized by forming the body of box by detachably connecting at four edges the longer side planks with the shorter side planks which are a little broader than the former; securing the bodyof box thus formed between a lid anda bottoni, both of Which are provided With cross pieces hav-- ing at their two ends notches; lining the said notches with metal plates through which are passed bolts from the bottom to the lid along the inner side of the box; and securing they heads of the bolts With ,nuts in the said notches so, that nothing projects out of the box surface, substantially as andy for the purposes hereinbefore set forth.

5. A knockdoivn packing box'comprising four sides, a top and bottom engaging: the top and bottom edges of said sides, means operative from the exterior of the box for securing the top and bottom together and to the sides, n the sides, entirely concealed from the exterior of the box and detachable to permit the sides Vto be taken apart, said last named means beinginoperative from the exterior of the box Without removing said top'or bottom. 1 In testimony whereof I have signed name to this specification.
