Description

Oct. 30, 1923.
G. x. WENDLING BOX Filed Feb. 16 1922 .ELWE
IN VENTLIR fi Patented Oct. 30, 1923.
UNITED STATES GEORGE x. WENIDLING, or SAN rnanorsoo, CALIFORNIA.
Box;
Application filed February 16, 1922. Serial No. 536,917.
To cZZ whom it mag concern:
Be it known that I, Gnonen X. WENDLING, a citizen of the United States, residing at the city and county of San Francisco and State of California, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Boxes, of which the followingis a specification.
Receptacles or boxes for shipping fruit, particularly citrus fruits and apples, are of the double compartment type, and as at present constructed, the sides are nailed to the end and partition membersby nails driven into the members lengthwise of the grain. This construction provides a relatively heavy box lacking in strength, as the securing means driven into the end and partition members easily work loose during the handling or shipment of the box, subjecting or exposing the contents to damage resulting in loss to the packer, shipper or consumer, and incurring increased unnecessary expense in the transportation of the box or package. 7
By my present invention, I have provided a construction which has for its principal object to provide a compartment, receptacle or box wherein the sides, top and bottom are secured to the end and division members by nails or securing means which in each instance are driven into the ends or division member across the grain insuring the anchoring therein of the securing means and precluding their easy removal therefrom thereby providing a receptacle or box of great strength and which is capable of with standing rough handling without being weakened by the separation of the side or other wall, due to the nails or securing means working loose owing to being driven into the end or partition periphery with the grain of the wood.
Other objects and advantages of my present invention are to provide a receptacle having end or division members of the panel type insuring lightness and strength, with the frame edge immediately surrounding the panel cut or fashioned to present a rounded or other relatively smooth surface to the receptacle contents, so that the same will not become bruised in packing or transportation; to provide a box, which due to the end or partition construction, is considerably lighter in weight than receptacles or boxes now manufactured for like purposes, thereby reducing the expense in the transportation thereof.
, With the above mentioned and other objects in view, the invention consists in the novel construction and combination of parts hereinafter described, illustrated in the accompanying drawings, and set forth in the claim hereto appended, it being understood that various changes in the form, proportion, size and minor details of construction withinthe scope of the claim may be resorted to without departing from the spirit orrsacrificing any of the advantages of the invention.
To more fully comprehend the invention, reference is directed to the accompanying drawings wherein Figure l is a vertical sectional view of the preferred embodiment of my invention.
Figure 2 is a perspective view with parts broken away illustrating the construction of the end and division members.
, Figure 3 is a transverse vertical sectional view taken on line 3--3 of Figure l.
Referring more particularly to the several views of the drawings wherein like characters of reference designate corre: sponding parts, the numerals 1 indicate the end members of a compartment, receptacle or box of the type utilized in transportation of citrus fruits, and 2 the transverse division member separating the box or receptacle into compartments 3. The memhere 1 and 2 are each in the form of a rectangular frame consisting of side and top and bottom pieces 4i preferably united at their ends by the well known mortise and tenon joint construction 5, co-operating pieces of the respective frames being secured by staples or other members 6. It will be observed that the grain of the wood forming the frame members extends longitudinally of the respective members to present a cross grain to the nails or securing mem bers 7 of the box sides 8 and the top and bottom boards 9 and 10. The openings in the respective frames are closed by suitable panels 11, the edges of which are received in the annular grooves 12 formed on the inner periphery of the respective frames, which construction is clearly illustrated in Figure l. The panels 11, it will be observed, are considerably thinner than the thickness of their respective mounting frames, insuring a light but strong and rigid end or division member. The inner peripheral edges of the frames constituting the end members 1 are cut or fashioned as at 13 to present a rela tents of the receptacle is adapted to contact, and which relatively smooth'surface precludes the danger of injury to the contents of the receptacle should such contents be of an easily bruised nature, which is true of the citrus fruit. The inner peripheral edges of the division member 2 at opposite sides of the closing panel 11 thereof are similarly cut or fashioned as at 14c to present relatively smooth surfaces on opposite faces for a likepurpose as hereinbefore described.
It will be observed that by employing the recessed panel construction'for the end and division members that an increased area'is provided in the compartments 3 over that afforded by constructions noW universally in in use, wherein the end and division members are of relatively thick heavy material of the same thickness throughout their entire area.
It is to be understood that, while I have illustrated a box or receptacle of the compartment type, this present invention is designed for use inrconstructing boxes generally where a strong, light weight container is desired, and wherein the securing means for the walls such as the sides, top and bottom are driven into the anchoring members across the grain thereof.
It is, to be understood that the panel closing the frame opening may be of veneer, cardboard, or any suitable material and the construction of the same is not confined to wood.
Having thus described my invention,
ters Patent of the United States is V A compartment box, comprising side, top' and bottom wall forming members, and compartment end members to Which said wall forming members are united, each end member comprising a rigid rectangular frame formed with a continuous groove annularly of its inner periphery, the frame forming members of which are disposed with their grain extending at substantially right angles to the faces of the co-operating wall forming members, a single panel within each frame'with its peripheral edges received within said annular groove for closing the same and disposed with its faces inwardly spaced from'the outer faces of the frame, the inner peripheral edge of-one face each of the frame, forming members at one end of each compartment being cut to present a smooth surface to the contents of the compartment, the inner peripheral edges of op-' the frame forming-members forretaining said members together and the respective panels therein, and means passing throiwh th wall forming members and into 1; e
frame forming members across the grain.
thereof for uniting said wall forming members to said frame forming members.
In testimony whereof I name to this specification.v
