COMPAR'IIEENT END CLOSURE FOB BOXES.

Application filed February To all whom/it may concern Be it known -that I, Gnonon X. W ENDLING, a citizen of the United States, residing at the city and county of San Francisco and State of California, have invented certain new and useful improvements in Compartment End Closures for Boxes, of which the following is a specification.

Shipping boxes or receptacles particularly that type of box employed for packing and transporting citrous fruits as at present uni versally constructed consists of end members or compartment division member out from a single board, and to the edges of the end members are nailed the lOOX side, top and bottom walls, The nails holding certain opposing walls in position firmly engage the end members as they are driven thereinto across the grain while the nails holding the other walls are easily extracted, due to their being driven into the ends longitudinally of the grain.

The end members as at present used are quite thick to afford strengthand are con sequently heavy, the thickness affording fa transverse area for driving nails endwise of the grain.

My present invention relates to an improvement in box or compartment ends particularly designed to be utilized in the corn struction of boxes for shipping citrous fruits, and by which invention there is presented a cross rain at the periphery of the end member and into which the securing means, such as the nails for the walls, are driven, insuring maximum strength for the package and overcoming the liability of the securing means becomin loose in the shipment of the receptacle.

The invention further relate to a panel. type of boX end wherein a. frame forms the perphery oi the end and is closed in its center by a closing panel of a thickness less than that of the frame, and one wherein the inner peripheral edge of the frame at op nosite sides of the panel i cut or formed to present a smooth surface to thev contents of the receptacle.

The present invention is designed for construction from material now discarded and destroyed by the lumber mills and the box factories generally, enabling a conserving of the lumber by utilization of the waste material, which materially reduces the cost of manufacture of the end below that where new or special material would be required.

With the above mentioned and other ob jects in view, the invention consists in the novel construction and combination of parts hereinafter described, illustrated in the accompanying drawings and pointed out in the claim hereto appended; it being understood that various changes in the form, proportion, size and minor details of construction within the scope of the claim may be resorted to without departing from the spirit or acrificing any of the advantages of the invention.

To more clearly comprehend the invention, reference is directed to the accompanying drawings, wherein- Fig. 1 is a view in perspective of the preferred embodiment of my invention.

Fig. 2 is a vertical sectional view taken on line 2-2 of Fig. 1.

Fig. 3 is a view in detail section of one of the corners illustrating the securing means for the frame forming members.

lleferringmore particularly to the drawings, wherein like characters of reference designate corresponding parts-1 indicates a rectangular i'rame formed of interconnected wood members 2 disposed with the inner edges of adjacent members at right angles to each other. Certain of the member 2 are formed at their opposite ends with ten one 3, each of which is received within a mortise 4 formed in the end of a co-opeia ting member 2. This construction provides a rigid joint connection between cooperating members 2 as the material or top of the members 2 provided with tenons lies in contact, as at 5, with that port-ion of the co-operating members 2 formed with mortises for the full depth of the mortise joint. The interlocked ends of the members 2 are united by staples or other securing means 6 which pass therethrough transversely of the grain.

lit will be observed from Fig. 1 that the frame forming members 2 are arranged with the grain extending longitudinally thereof, thereby affording a cross grain to a securing member driven into the periphery of the frame. The inner periphery of the frame between it opposite faces 7 and 8 is annularly grooved, as at 9, to receive a frame closing panel 10 of a thickness considerably less than that of the frame.

To present a relatively smoothsurface to the contents of a box or receptacle constructed with one of the improved ends, i prefer to out, fashion, or round the frame edge at one or both sides of the panel 10, as at 11. When the panel is employed as a dividing panel between two compartments, as, for example, the center division member in a citrous fruit box, both of the inner peripheral edges of the frame are rounded as at 11 to present a smooth surface to the contents of the receptacle in each compartment,

but Where the member is used at one end of a compartment, it is only necessary to round or fashion one edge 11 thereof.

It will be observed that the frame members 2 are of eomparatix 'ely short length, also the panel 10 i formed of relatively thin mate rial, and the positioning thereof within the the center of the frame adds strength to the frame and enables the same to be constructed considerably lighter than the solid box ends now universally in use.

It is to be understood that the panel closing the frame opening may be of veneer,

card-board or any suitable material and the construction of the same is not confined to Wood,
