. .3 .Claims.
The invention .relates .toa shipping case and .more .especially to .a knockdown .egg 4case ordrum.
The .primaryobject of the invention is the yproyision .of a ycaseor .drum of this character, where.- .in the body .thereof .is .of cylindrical form and longitudinally split, so that the .said body can .be attened for .convenience in shipment, partcularly for .the return ofthe .case or drum `to the shipper, .and when in .collapsedor knockdowncon- .dition will .be .compact and occupy space, .the .said body being preferably made from wood, such aswood veneer, and materially rein- .forced to .assure strength ,and rigidity thereto without interference in -the .knocking down or .setting up of the case.
Another .object Aof .the invention v-is .the provision .of .a 4caseordrum .of this character, wherein the same will accommodate vra filler or iillers for the nesting of eggs therein to assure safety oi its contents during shipment, and the-end heads constituting a bottom and =top are fastened in .place in a .novel manner to assure security to the contents and also to permit the fitting of these heads and ltheir removal with dispatch.
A further object of the `invention is vthe pro- .vision .of a caseor of thisvcharacter, wherein the end head constituting the bottom :tor the .body is made secure within the latter andsueh body is externally reinforced to vassure maxi-mum strength and to withstand rough handling and usage, as the same is `assured of sturdiness and lis practically lnon-breakable.
A still further object `of the invention is the provision `of a case or drum of this character which is comparatively simple in construction, `.thoroughly reliable and efficient in its purposes, strong, durable, readily and leasily knocked down and set up, and inexpensive to manufacture.
With these and other objects Ain view, the invention consists in the features of construction, combination and arrangement vof parts as will -be hereinafter more fully described in detail, illustrated inthe accompanying drawings, which dis- .close the preferred embodiment of the invention,
and pointed out in the claims hereunto appended.
In the accompanying drawings:
`Figure l is a vertical sectional view through a. case or drumconstructed in accordance with the invention showing therein iillers for eggs and a dry ice compartment or container, the head being secured .with the Vbodyof the case.
Figure 2 is a sectional view 4on :the line 2--2 of Figure 1 looking in `the direction -of fthe arrows.
Figure 3 is a fragmentary .side elevation .of .the ,oaseor .Figure 4 :is .an :exploded fragmentary elevation .showing the interfitting ends Vof the body and the .securing pins .tor the .iastening of the endg together.
Figure .5 is .a fragmentary elevation showing l the .ends -of the body .intertted .and fastened.

for accommodating the eyes or sleeves I3 on theV intertting of these plates one with the other. When the plates II and I2 are intertted by the engagement oi' the pintle eyes or sleeves I3 in the slots III, the said pintle eyes or sleeves receive a pin-like fastening key I5 which is trained or threaded through the said eyes or sleeves, and in this manner the body I0 is set up in cylindrical form and secure for shipment.
At the bottom edge of thev body I0 is a series of cleats I6, each being made from metal straps bent on themselves to straddle the bottom edge of the body I0, with the ends disposed exteriorly and internally of said body and made secure thereto by rivets or other fasteners I1. These cleats I6 constitute rests or bearings for the end head I8 constituting the bottom of the case or y drurn, it being preferably made from fibrous material and of disk form. The rivetsor fasteners I1 carry retaining pieces I9 which hold the bot- The top 2i is of disk form and is adapted to rest upon the staves or strips 20 when in place.
Vt intervals'ofthe periphery of the top 2| and made secure thereto are metallic bendable hasps 22, these being engageable with companion eye keepers 23 made secure to the body exteriorly thereof. The hasps 22 are engaged with the-keepers 23when the top has been fitted upon the body in its cylindrical form by the bending of such hasps 22, each being provided with an opening 24 to accommodate the eye portions of the keepers 23. On the engagement ofthe hasps 22 with the keepers 23 there is passed through the eyes of the keepers 23 a tie wire 25 which encircles the body Ill and is tied, at 26, by the twisting of the ends Y of the wire together. Thus in this manner the top 2| is made secure to the body. Y
Carried within the body I Il when set up are the iillers 21 for accommodating the eggs 28 and these Vfillers are arranged in horizontal rows superposed with relation to each other. Associated centrally with the fillers 21 is a dry ice container 30 for refrigeration purposes. K Y
When the case or drum is to be returned to the shipper, the body I0 is flattened and a plurality of these bodies are stacked one'upon the'other, while the end heads constituting the bottom I8 `and top 2I are placed one Yupon the other for the t Y Vstacking thereof and in this fashion are shipped `or returned to the shipper, the fillers 21 being destroyed as they are adaptable'for single usage.
In Figures 12 to 15 of the drawings there is shown a slight modcation of the invention, wherein interfitted cleats 3| and 32, respectively,
' are cut and stamped from inner and outer hoops screws 36 are located exteriorly of the body. It Vwill be noted that the screws carry the retaining pieces I9 which hold the bottom I8 at rest upon the'said interiitted cleats.
By reference to Figure 16 of the drawings it will be noted that the fillers 21, due to the forma- Y I may be occupied. Y
These fillers are preferably made from pulpV vand function to cushion the eggs 28 for their l5 safety in shipment in the case or drum.
