UNITED STATES RALPH W. WILSON,
OF NEW YORK, N. Y.
SHAKER TO]? OR CAP.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Aug. 2, 1921.
Application filed March 22, 1920. Serial No; 367,980.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it knownthat I, RALPH W. WILSON, a citizen of the United States, and resident of the borough of Manhattan, in the city and State of New York, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Shaker Tops or Caps, of which the following is a specification.
The object of my invention is to provide a novel shaker top or cap in which the'memher which opens and closes the perforations in the top or cap is located within the top or cap, thereby giving a much neater appearance and protecting the movable member (firom injury and from exposure to dust and irt.
A further object is to provide a shaker top or cap in which the inner rotary member is held in position by friction, thereby eliminating the necessity and expense of riveting it to the top or cap.
A still further object is to provide the inner member with spring means as an integral part thereof for pressing the inner member against the top of the outer member, thereby eliminating the necessity of providing a separate spring for this purpose.
A still further object is to provide certain improvements in the construction, form and arrangement of the several parts, whereby the device is materially simplified and rendered more effective for the purposes intended.
Practical embodiments of my invention are represented in the accompanying drawings, in which,
Figure 1 represents in side elevation a portion of a receptacle with one embodiment of my invention applied thereto.
Fig. 2 represents the same partly in plan and partly in horizontal section.
Fig. 3 represents a vertical central section taken in the plane of the line III-III of Fig. 2.
Fig. 4 represents a plan of the inner member blank.
Fig. 5 represents another embodiment of my invention partly in plan and partly in horizontal section.
ig. 6 represents a vertical central section taken in the plane of the line VI-VI of Fig. 5.
Fig. 7 represents still another embodiment of my invention partly in plan and partly in horizontal section.
Fig. 8 represents a vertical central section taken in the of Fig. 7.
The top or cap may be made of sheet metal or other suitable material capable of being formed into the required shape. This top or cap comprises the outer perforated member and the inner shutter member which is arranged to be oscillated to open and close the perforations in the outer member.
In the embodiment illustrated in Figs. 1 to 4 inclusive, the outer member 1 forms an integral part of the body 2 of the receptacle and which has an annular series of perforations 3 for the escape of the contents of the plane of the line VIII-VIII receptacle when the perforations are open and the receptacle inverted. This outer member 1 has an annular interior shoulder 4 formed by the junction of the neck and head of the top. It also has an elongated slot 5 in its neck leading part way around the same.
The inner rotary member 6 has an annular series of perforations 7 arranged to be brought into and out of alinement with the perforations 3 in the head of the outer member as the inner member is oscillated. This inner member is frictionally held in the head of the outer member and is pressed against the top of the head, as for instance, by providing the inner member with tongues 8 'Which act as spring means, which tongues are snapped into position to press against the shoulder 4. A finger piece 9 projects from the inner member 6 through the slot 5 in the neck of the outer member to serve as an exposed means tobe engaged by the operator for moving the inner member to open and close the perforations in the outer member. i
The inner member may also beprovided "with depending flanges l0 and 11 upon opposite sidesof the finger piece 9 for keeping the slot 5 closed as the finger piece is moved along the same, to prevent the escape of the contents of the receptacle through said slot.
Several different devices may be employed for holding the inner member against unintentional displacement when in its closed position, or its open position or in either its closed or its open position. For instance, the inner member may be provided with an annular series of projections snap into the perforations 3 when the inner member is moved to close t c said perforations. The outer member may be. provided with an annular series of depressions 13 ar- 12 arranged to ranged in position to receive the projections 12 when the inner member is moved to open the perforations 3. Also the neck of the outer member may pression 14 which will receive either the projection 15 or the projection 16 on the de nding flange 11 in the inner member to ho d the inner member open or closed against unintentional displacement.
In the embodiment shown in inclusive, the top or cap is shown as being provided with a screw-threaded flange 17 for attaching it to the neck of a bottle or other receptacle 18. While the shapes of these tops or caps in these embodiments are somewhat difierent from the shape shown in the first embodiment, the inner member works in the same way in the head of the outer member. Y
It is obvious that various changes might be made in the construction, form and arrangement of the several parts of my top or cap without departing from the spirit and scope of my invention; hence I do not wish to limit myself to the particular embodiments herein shown and described, but
WhatI claim is p 1. A shaker top or cap comprising a perforated outer member and a rotatable inner member frictionally mounted in the 'outer member.
2. A shaker top or cap comprising a per forated outer member and a rotatable inner member provided with spring means for pressing the central portion of the inner member against the central portion of the outer member.
3. A shaker top or cap comprising an outer perforated member and an inner rotatable member, the outer member having a slot therein and the inner member having a finger piece projecting through the slot into position to be operated to oscillate the inner member to open and close the perforations in the outer member, and spring means for pressing the innermmber snugly against the outer member.
be provided with a de- Figs. 5 to 8.
4. A shaker top or cap comprising an outer perforated member having an interior shoulder, an inner member resting on said shoulder and pressed against the top of the outer member, said outer member having a slot and said inner member having a finger piece project' pending flanges upon opposite sides of the finger piece for keeping the slot closed as the finger piece is moved along the same to cause the inner member to open and close the perforations in the outer member.
5. A shaker top or cap comprising a perforated outer member having an interior shoulder, and an inner member having spring tongues resting on said shoulder for pressing the inner member against the top of the outer member. 7 3
6. A shaker top or cap comprising a perforated outer member having an interior shoulder, aninner member having spring tongues resting on said shoulder for pressing the inner member against the top of the outer member, said outer memberhaving a slot and said inner member having a finger piece projecting through said slot in position to be moved to cause the inner member to open and close the perforations in the outer member. I
7. A shaker top or cap comprisinga perforated outer member having an interior shoulder, an inner member having spring tongues resting on said shoulder for pressing the inner member against the top of the outer member, said outer member having a slot and said inner member having a finger piece projecting through said slot in position to be moved to cause the inner member to open and close the perforations in the outer member, and flanges depending from ,the 'inner member upon opposite sides of the finger piece for keeping the slot in the outer member closed.
In testimony, as my invention, 1 have signed my name this 17th day of March 1920.
