Description

R. W. WILSON-.
SHAKER TOP OR CAP.
APPLICATION FILED MAY 8, 1920.
1,386,044. Pat ntedAug. ,1921.
RALPH W. WILSON, OF NEW YORK, -N. Y.
SHAKER Tor on on.
Application filed May 8,
' T0 aZZwizom 2'1 may concern.
Be it known that I, RALPH \V. WILSON, a citizen of the United States, and resident of the borough of Manhattan, in the city and State of New York, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Shaker Tops or Caps, (Case'IL) of which the following is a specification.
The object of my invention is to provide a novel shaker top or cap which will be practically powder tight, which will be very easy to manipulate and which will be inexpensive to manufacture and attractive in ap pearance.
A further objectisto providea shaker top or cap in which the shutter member is held frictionally between the inner and outer perforated top or cap members and movable to open and close the perforations in said inner and outer members, the location of the shutter member giving a much neater appearance to the receptacle to which the top or cap is applied and also protecting the shutter member from injury and from exposure to dust and dirt.
A further object is to provide a shutter member which is held in position by friction, thereby eliminating the necessity and expense of using a separate spring.
A still further object is to provide certain improvements in the construction, form and arrangement of the several parts whereby the device is materially simplified and rendered more effective for the purposes intended.
Practical embodiments of my invention are represented in the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 represents in side elevation a portion of a receptacle with one-embodiment of my invention applied thereto.
Fig. 2 represents a top or cap in top plan,
the regulable shutter member being shown in its closed position.
Fig. 3 represents a. vertical section on an enlarged scale taken in the plane of the line III-III of Fig. 2.
Fig. 4 represents a vertical section on an enlarged scale taken in the plane of the line IVIV of Fig. 2.
Fig. 5 represents the shutter member in perspective.
Fig. 6 represents in vertical central section another embodiment of my invention.
The top 0. cap may be made of sheet metal or other suitable material capable of being Specification of Letters Patent.
, perforations 5 in the outer Patented Aug. 2, 1921. 1920. Serial No. 379,858.
formed into the required shape. This top or cap comprises the inner perforated top or cap member 1, the outer perforated top or cap member 2 and the interposed regulable shutter member The perforations 4 in the inner top or cap member 1 are always in alinement with the to or ca member 2. The perforations 6 in the int rposed shutter member 3 are arranged to be brought into and out of alinement tions 4 and 5 as the shutter member 3 is moved back and forth into its opened and closed positions.
This interposed shutter member 3 is frictionally held between the inner and outertop or cap members 1 and 2 and it is pro- :ldGd with oppositely disposed finger pieces. '1 and 8, whlch project through slots 9 and 10 in the side walls 11 of the outertop or cap member 2. These side walls 11 ofthe outer top or cap member 2 overlap and are permanently secured to the side walls 12 of the inner top or walls 12 of the inner top or cap member may be an integral part of theside walls of the receptacle 13 as shown in Figs. 1 t0 4; inclusive, or they may be screw-threaded as shown at 14 in Fig. 6, so that the top or cap may be removably attached to the screwthreaded neck 15 of a bottle or other receptacle 16.
The inner top or cap member 1 is provided with a depressed portion 17 and a raised peripheral portion 18. This raised peripheral portion 18 is omitted where the oppositely disposed finger pieces 7 and 8 are located. This raised peripheral portion 18 snugly engages the inner face of the outer top or cap member 2, thus forming a powder tight joint which is very desirable.
The means which I have shown for yield ingly holding the shutter member 3 in its opened or closed position is as follows:
The shutter member 3 is provided with a downwardly extended projection 19 which is caused to snap into either oneof the two depressions 20 or 21, in the face of the inner toplmember 1 as the shutter is moved into its opened or closed position. The inner top or cap member 1 is sufliciently yielding to allow the projection 19 to pass from one to the other of the depressions 20, 21.
It is evident that various changes may be resorted to in the construction, form and arrangement of the several parts of my top or cap member 1. These side with the perforameans for yieldingly holding the cap without departing from the spirit and scope ofiny invention; hence I do not wish to limit myself to the particular embodiments herein shown and described, but
What I claim is i 1. A shaker top or cap comprising perforated inner, outer and intermediate members of thin sheet material, said intermediate member being provided with oppositely dis.- posed finger pleces projecting throughthe sidewalls of the outer member for use in reciprocating the intermediate member, and
intermediate member opened or closed, said means being arranged to spring one of the members out of its normal position as the intermediate member is reciprocated.
2. A shaker top or cap comprising perforatedinner, outer and intermediate members of thin sheet material, the inner member having inte ralconverging side walls forming a shoul er and the outer member having integral converging side walls overlapping and permanently secured to the side walls of the inner member, the intermediate member being slidable back and forth across-the top of the cap between the inner and outer members, and the inner member being crowned to frictionally press the intermedlate member against the outer member.
3. A shaker top or cap comprising perforated inner, outer and intermediate members of thin sheet material, the inner member having inte al converging side walls forming a shoul er and the outer member having integral converging side walls overlapping.
and permanently secured to the side walls of the inner member, the intermediate member being slidable back and forth across the top of the cap between the inner and outer mem:
bers, the inner member being crowned to frictionally press the intermediate member a ainst the outer member, and means for yieldingly holding the intermediate member opened or closed, said means being arranged to force the inner and outer members apart as the intermediate member is moved between its opened and 'closed positions.
4. A sha er top or' cap comprising inner and outer perforated members and an intermediate. perforated shutter member reciprocable transversely of the top or cap, all of said members being of thin sheet material, the inner member having a raised eripheral portion engaging the outer member and a depressed central portion forming a seat for the shutter member, the inner member pressing the shutter member against the outer member, the shutter member being provided with oppositely disposed finger pieces projecting through the side walls of the outer member, the raised peripheral portion of the inner member having breaks therein forming seats for said finger pieces, the depressed portion and the breaks in the raised portion of the inner member being of a depth substantially equal to the'thickness of the shutter member and its finger pieces, to form a powder tight joint.
5. A shaker top or cap comprising nner and outer perforated members andan intermediate perforated shutter member reci rocable transversely of thetop or cap, al of said members being of thin sheet material,
the inner member having a raised peripheral portion engaging the outer member and a depressed central portion forming a seat for the shutter member, the, inner member pressing oppositely disposed finger pleces projecting v the shutter member against the outer memher, the shutter member bein provided Wltll' through the side walls of the outer member,
cured to the side walls of the inner member.
6. A shaker top or cap comprising inner and outer perforated members and an intermediate perforated shutter member reciprocable transversely of the top or cap, all of said members being of thin sheet material,

7, A shaker top or cap comprising inner and outer perforated members and an intermediate perforated shutter .member reciprocabletransversel of the top or cap, all of said members being of thin sheet material, the inner member having a raised peripheral portion engaging the outer'member and a depressed central portion forming a seat for the shutter member, the inner member pressing the shutter member a ainst the outer member, the shutter mem r being provided with oppositely disposed finger pieces projecting through the side walls of the outer member, the raised peripheral pertion of the inner member having breaks therein forming seats for said finger pieces,
to form a powder tight joint, and means for yieldingly holding the shutter member opened or closed, said means being arranged to force one of the members out of its normal osition as the shutter member is moved between its opened and closed positions.
8. A shaker top or cap comprising inner and outer perforated members and an intermediate perforated shutter member reciprocable transversely of the top or cap, all
. of said members being of thin sheet material,
