J u H ILI'IIITU Tli ' INVENTOR fizz/101g L. #25219,
ATTORNEY UNITED STATES ANTHONY L. ASTE, OF BROOKLYN, NEW YORK.
POWDER-BOX.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Nov. 2, 1920.
Application filed May 10, 1919. Serial No. 296,203.
To all on item it may 0002 0am:
Be it known that I, ANTHONY L. Asrn, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of the borough of Brooklyn, county of Kings, city and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Powder-Boxes, of which the following is a specification.
' This invention relates to powder boxes and has for its primary object to provide improved means for assembling in compact relation with the body of the box, a holder for a pad, cloth or other applicator.
' More particularly, the present invention contemplates the provision of a box or receptacle such as is commonly used for talcum powders, the body of the box having a false bottom wall provided with a central upwardly projecting portion affording a recess, and a detachable bottom section for the box, frictionally held in assembled relation therewith and adapted to contain the pad or other applicator member which projects from the open side of the bottom section and into said recess.
It is a further general object of my inven tion to provide a powder box or container having a detachable bottom section which is of such construction that the invention may be readily applied to boxes or containers of various shapes and without greatly increasing the manufacturing cost thereof.
With the above and other objects in view, the invention consists in the improved combination, arrangement and construction of the several parts, as will be hereinafter more fully described, subsequently claimed and illustrated in the accompanying drawing in which similar reference characters designate correspondin parts throughout the several views and w ierein Figure 1 is a perspective view, partly broken away, of a talcum powder box constructed in accordance with one embodiment of my invention;
Fig. 2 is an enlarged vertical section through the base portion of the box;
Fig. 8 is a detail perspective view of the base section detached from the body of the box;
Fig. i is an elevation, partly in section, illustrating a slightly modified construction of the invention and showing the same as applied to another form of box; and
Fig. 5 is a detail fragmentary vertical secvide the talcum powder box with improved 7 means whereby the polishing cloth or pad may be compactly arranged and carried by the box or container, so that it will not be likely to be misplaced and lost.
In Fig. l of the drawing I have illustrated a talcum powder box having a body 5, whichmay be either of elliptical or circular form in cross section. This body is provided at its upper end with the usual perforated cap 6 and a shiftable disk for opening and closing the perforations in said cap. The wall of the body 5 at its lower end is forced inwardly and upwardly by means of a suitable die whereby a circumferential head 7 is formed and an annular inwardly extending longitudinal portion 8 in close contact with the body wall of the box. 9 designates the false bottom wall which is thus formed within the lower end of the box body, and the central portion of this wall is upwardly projected as at 10, to thereby produce an exterior recess 11 in said false bottom wall. The detachable base section 12 of the box is reduced in diameter at one of its ends to provide the longitudinally extending flange 13, which is adapted for tight frictional engagement against the inner face of the inturned portion 8 of the body wall of the box. The annular section of the false bottom wall 9, which connects the portion 8 with the upwardly projected portion 10 affords a stop shoulder with which the end of the flange 1-3 is adapted to contact. Within the detachable bottom section 12 of the box a pad or cloth indicated at 1 is adapted to be arranged. A portion of this cloth projects beyond the open end of the bottom section 12 and is received within the recess 11 of the box bottom. By providing this recess, it is possible to employ a relatively shallow bottom section 12.
In the use of the device, the powder is shaken from the box through the perforathat to which I have above referred.
In Fig. 4 of the drawing I have disclosed a slightly modified construction of the box wherein the false bottom wall 9 is stamped from a separate piece of metal and the lower edge of the body wall of the box is securely clenched and held within the outwardly turned bead 7 on the lower edge of said bottom wall. In all other respects, the construction is identical with that which I have above described. I have, however, shown this modified construction as adapted to a relatively shallow cylindrical box 5, such as is usually employed as a container for toilet powders. In such case, the detachable box bottom mightbe provided with a pad of chamois or cotton permanently fixed therein, though it is to be understood that in connection with this type of box I might also use the removable cloth or other applicator member. From the foregoing description considered in connection with the accompanying drawing, the construction of my improved powder box, and its several advantages in practical use, will be clearly and fully understood. The bottom section of the box may be easily and quickly applied and is securely held in connection with the body section by the tight frictional engagement of the flange 13 with the wall 8. The cloth 14, which is housed within this body section, is thus very compactly held and retained by the assembled sections of the box, so that it will not be misplaced or lost, and is always ready for instant use. The two sheet metal sections of the box can be readily formed or stamped by means of suitable dies in an expeditious and inexpensive manner, so that the box may be employed as a container for outwardly and together with theedge of the body wall of the can formed into the bead 7 The detachable base section 12 is relatively deep and the flange 13 thereof which frictionally engages within the part 8 preferably is relatively short and does not contact with the bottom wall 10. -By this construction, the device is somewhat simplified and a chamber of considerable capacity afforded for the reception of the cloth or pad.
While I have herein shown and described several practical forms of my invention, it is nevertheless apparent that the device may also be exemplified in various other alternative constructions, and I accordingly reserve the privilege of adopting all suchlegitimate changes as may be fairly embodied within the spirit and scope of the invention as claimed.
I claim- 7 A powder box comprising a box body having a false bottom offset inwardly and in stepped relation relatively to the plane of the lower edge of the box body, the said bottom being stepped from wall to wall of the box body and the lower portion of said bot tom being equal substantially to the diameter of the box body, and a powder puff holder of substantially the same diameter as the box body and provided with an upper reduced portion adapted to frictionally engage in said stepped bottom, said powder puff holder providing a true bottom for the box body upon which the latter is adapted to rest.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my invention I have signed my name hereunder.
