DUSTPANi APPLICATION FILED JAN-29, 1921,
Patented July 12, 19210 I a citizen of the Dominion of Canada,- residraraar ARTHUR MGGALLAN, F OTTAWA, @NTARIO, CANADA.
lPatented July 12', 19211.
DUS'EJPAN.
1 ,ggg qw Specifieation'of Letters Patent.
Application filed January 29, 1921. serial Zit'o. 10,912. To all whom it mwy concern:
Be it known that I, ARTHUR MOCALLAN,
ing at Ottawa, in the county of Carleton and Province of Ontario, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Dustpans, of which the following is a specification. v
The present invention relates to improvements in dust pans or the like and the principal object is to provide a device, of the character described, which is providedwith resilient means for causing the open edge portion of the same to adhere to the surface during the sweeping of dust and refuse thereinto.
Another object is to provide a dust pan, having a strip of resilient material, such as rubber detachably connected to its front edge to provide a close union of the pan with the floor or surface during the sweepingvoperation.
'th these and other objects in View, the
invention consists in the construction, com- 'bination and arrangements of parts as will be hereinafter fully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawings, and pointed out in the claim hereunto appended.
Figure 1 is a perspective view of the im- Fig. 2 is a fragmental vertical section through the pan base and attachment,-illustrating the connecting means for the latter.
Fig. 3 is a magnified fragmental View of a modified means for attaching the strip to the pan base.
Fig. 4 is a fragmental vertical section on line 4'4 of Fig. 2 and Fig. 5 is a section on line 5-5 of Fig. 2, illustrating the holding elements.
Referring to the drawings like numerals designate likeiparts in the various draw- 7 ings.
As is well known the ordinary dust pan is not entirely effective in gathering up sweeping and particularly dust, by reason of the failure of the pan to be held in close relationship to the floor and resultantly all of the dust is not swept into the pan.
The improved device comprises a pan, having base and flange portions 5 and 6 and a handle 7, which extends through the flange 6 and is secured by a rivet 8 to the said base portion 5. J
Connected to the front edge 9 of the pan hase 5, by soldering is an elongated metallic U-shaped channel member 10, the outer edges of which extend in alinement with the edge 9 of the base. A strip of relatively thick rubber 11 is. inserted within the channel'member 10 and secured by means of rivets 12, pasing entirely through the pan base 5, strip 11 and the channel member J10. This strip 11 extends entirely across the open front edge of the base 5 and has its outer end tapered to a point as .illustrated .at 13. 7 l I By providing a thickness of rubber at the rear of the strip 11 a certain rigidity is imparted to the latter, while'the front part,
by virtue of the taper to form the point 13,
imparts resiliency, so. that the strip 11', when the same is forced in contact with the floor by pressure upon the handle 7, will adhere to the floor or surface and consequently no dust or dirt can pass under the In the modification, illustrated in Fig. 3 the front edge of the base 5 is submitted to operation of a stamping press which shears the. metal as at 14 and forms spring lips15 extensions 20 and the ends of the said extensions 19 and 20 are upset as at 22, so that the strip 17 is firmly held between the lips 15 and 16. Y I
Likewise, the resilient strip of material tapered to a point as at 23 and rivets 24'are passed through the lips 15 at each end of the pan to further hold the strip 17 in position thereon. a
It is obvious, that rubberized packing or other material of requisite resiliency and efliciency may be employed in lieu of the rubber strips 11 and 17.
From the foregoing it is thought that the construction of my invention will be clearly understood, and, therefore, a more extended explantion has been omitted.
Having thus described the invention what I claim as new is J Asa new article of manufacture, the herein described dust pan comprising a base, the said base having its edge portion sheared each alternate lip adapted to be bent outient lips and resilient strip.
to form a-series o'f alternately disposed lips, pass through the said extensions and resil- '10 wardly of the next succeeding lip, said lips In testimony whereof Iafiix my signature being resilient, a-strip of resilient material in the presence of two witnesses.
having its end received between said lips, ARTHUR MQCALLAN. washers bearing against said material adja Witnesses: I cent the adjacent edges of separated lips, MQMQMILLAN,
and staples having extensions adapted to E, LITLE.
