Be it known that I, ARTHUR MOCALLAN,

ing at Ottawa, in the county of Carleton and Province of Ontario, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Dustpans, of which the following is a specification. v

The present invention relates to improvements in dust pans or the like and the principal object is to provide a device, of the character described, which is providedwith resilient means for causing the open edge portion of the same to adhere to the surface during the sweeping of dust and refuse thereinto.

Another object is to provide a dust pan, having a strip of resilient material, such as rubber detachably connected to its front edge to provide a close union of the pan with the floor or surface during the sweepingvoperation.

As is well known the ordinary dust pan is not entirely effective in gathering up sweeping and particularly dust, by reason of the failure of the pan to be held in close relationship to the floor and resultantly all of the dust is not swept into the pan.

The improved device comprises a pan, having base and flange portions 5 and 6 and a handle 7, which extends through the flange 6 and is secured by a rivet 8 to the said base portion 5. J

Connected to the front edge 9 of the pan hase 5, by soldering is an elongated metallic U-shaped channel member 10, the outer edges of which extend in alinement with the edge 9 of the base. A strip of relatively thick rubber 11 is. inserted within the channel'member 10 and secured by means of rivets 12, pasing entirely through the pan base 5, strip 11 and the channel member J10. This strip 11 extends entirely across the open front edge of the base 5 and has its outer end tapered to a point as .illustrated .at 13. 7 l I By providing a thickness of rubber at the rear of the strip 11 a certain rigidity is imparted to the latter, while'the front part,

It is obvious, that rubberized packing or other material of requisite resiliency and efliciency may be employed in lieu of the rubber strips 11 and 17.

From the foregoing it is thought that the construction of my invention will be clearly understood, and, therefore, a more extended explantion has been omitted.
