ISHOVEL.
No. 256,325. Patented Apr. 11, 1882 N. pzrznyvnmuim hu. Wnhington. 11a
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.-
JACOB A. JOHNTRY, OF BROOKLYN, NEWwoRK, assrenoe or ONE-HALF TO ISAAC SMITH REMSON, or SAME PLACE.
SHOVEL.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters latent No. 256,325, dated April 11, 1882.
Application filed February 25, 1882. (N0 model To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JACOB A. J OHN'IRY, of Brooklyn, in the State of New York, a citizen of the United States, have invented a new and useful Improvement in,Shovels,' of which the following is a specification.
The nature of my invention consists in the application of a strip of hard india-rubloer at the end ofa shovel, whereby articles such as sinks, 850., can be scraped and cleaned and then taken up by the shovel, saving thereby the use of a brush for that purpose.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure I rep resents the stamped-out shovel before the india-rubber is attached to the same. Fig. II is a top view of a shovel with the india-rubber attached. Fig. III is an end view ofthe same.
Similar letters represent similar parts.
A represents the shovel, made in any desired shape. To the forward end a strip of india-rubber, B, is attached, projecting about one-sixteenth of an inch or more. This indiarubber strip may be fastened to the end by placing the same underneath the end edge, and
then putting a thin piece of metal at the outside and riveting the same to the shovel.
To simplify the attachment, make the'same with less trouble and expense, and at the same time make the end of the shovel as smooth as are then passed through theindia-rubber strip B and the body of theshovel A, and then harnmered down flat.
By this improved shovel, sinks and similar articles, particularly when the same are wet,
can easilybe scraped and cleaned, better than 40 by the use of a brush, by holding the shovel edgewise to the surface, and then the thus collected dirt shoveled up.
What I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
45 1. In combination with the edge of a shovel,
a strip of india-rubber, B, projecting a short distance over the edge of the shovel, substantially in the manner and for the purpose described.
2. A shovel-blank provided with projecting strips m m at the sides at its end, substantially for the purpose specified.
JACOB A. JOHNTRY.
