Description

Eatented May 15, 1923.
AL ERT WEICKIVIAN, or nnnnrson, NEW Yonn.
SHOVEL.
* Application filed January 13, 1923. SerialNo. 612,445;
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ALBERT WEICKMAN, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Harrison, in the county of Westchester and State of New York, have invented a new and Improved Shovel, ofwhich the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
This invention relates to household articles or implements and has particular reference to an improvement in shovels.
One of the principal objects of the present invention is to produce a shovel which in addition to serving in its usual capacity for introducing coal to a furnace or stove and for removing ashes from the same, functions as a sieve for separating the dust or dirt from the coal and for removing the cinders from the ashes.
As a further object the invention contemplates a device of the character described which is extremely simple in its construction and mode of use and which is inexpensive to manufacture and produce.
With the above recited and other objects in view, the invention resides in the novel construction set forth in the following specification, particularly pointed out in the appended claims and illustrated in the accompanying drawings, it being understood that the right is reserved to embodiments other than those actually illustrated herein to the I full extent indicated by the general meaning of the terms in which the claims are expressed.
In the drawing Figure 1 is a plan view of a shovel con structed in accordance with the invention.
Fig. 2 is an enlarged longitudinal sectional View taken approximately on the line 2--2 of Fig. 1.
Fig. 3 is a transverse sectional view taken on the line 3-3 of Fig. 1.
Referring to the drawing by characters of reference, the shovel consists of a body 10 having an end flange 11 and side flanges 12. The shovel body or bottom 10 is cut away adjacent its flanged end 11 to provide an opening 13 and as illustrated the material 14 defining the forward edge of the opening 13 is V-shaped for a purpose to be hereinafter set forth. A foraminous material consisting of a bottom portion 15, and end wall 16 and side Walls 17 is fitted within the shovel body whereby the bottom portion 15 covers the opening 13. The forward edges of the bottom portion 15 and the side walls 17 are secured in place and maintained in contact with the bottom 10 and side flanges 12 of the shovel by a strip 18 which is soldered or otherwise attached thereto. The upper edge of the side wall 17 and the end wall 16 of the foraminous material is secured in place by the inturned bead or edge 19 of the side and end flanges 12 and 11. The shovel handle 20 is attached to the shovel by a pair of angular straps 21 which embrace the opposite side flanges 12 and the end flange 11. The straps 21 are secured in place by rivets or bolts 22 which pass through the end and side flanges 11 and 12 and also through the end and side walls 16 and 17 of the foramin'ous material. The V-shaped material defining the front edge of the opening 13 affords a projection which underlies the bottom portion 15 of the foraminous material lending an added support to the foraminous material adjacent its forward edge whereby to strengthen and support the same at this point to prevent the pulling of the material and breaking of its edge away from the cutting strip 18.
In use of the invention when the user fills the shovel with coal, the dirt, dust or other small particies may be sifted from the shovel prior to the introduction of the coal to the stove or furnace. In removing the ashes, the cinders may be separated from the ashes which are sifted through the bottom portion 15 of the foraminous material and covering the opening 18 and the cinders thrown back into the fire.
I claim:
1. As a new article of manufacture, a combined shovel and sieve including a shovel body comprising a bottom, an end flange and side flanges, said bottom having an opening therethrough adjacent the flanged end, a foraminous lining arranged in said lining body adjacent the flanged end for covering the opening, an attaching and covering strip secured to the forward edge of the foraminous material and to the inner side of the bottom and side flanges and inturned beads from the upper edge of the side and end flanges embracing the upper edges of the foraminous lining.
2. As a new article of manufacture, a combined shovel and sieve including a shovel body comprising a bottom an end flange and side flanges, said bottom having an opening therethrough adjacent the flanged end, a foraminous lining arranged in said 'erijng strip secured to the forward edge of the forammous material and to the inner 0 side of the bottom dndside'flangeS and'i'nQ turned beads from the upper edge of the,
side and end flanges embracing the upper edges of the foraminous lining, and a handle" including attaching straps embracing the sides 'ofthe flanges and the end ifiange of the shovel body, and seeuringmeans extending-through said straps, the side and end ffla'nges of' 'the shovel body and the forarni ngus material. 1
