Description

H. D. LATHROP.
AN WASHING MACHINE.
A-"PUCATION FILED AUGKZ5, 1919' Patented May 1-7, 1921.

NITED STATES PATENT] OFFICE.
HARRY'D. LATHROP, OF CHICAGO, ILLINOIS.
CAN-WASHING MACHINE.
Specification of Letters Patent. Patent d May 17 1921 Application filed August 25, 1919. Serial No 319,801.
T 0 all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, HARnY D LATHRoP, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of the city of Chicago, county of Cook, and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Can-Vashing Machines, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates toimprovements in can washing machines, andmore particularly to the, discharge mechanism thereof,-
the object of the invention being toprovide means for lessening the noise and shock commonly present in such machines.
, Other objects will appear hereinafter.
The invention will be best understood by reference to the accompanying drawings forming a part of this specification,- and. in which, i 1
Figure 1 is-a longitudinal section taken through the discharge end of a well-known form of can washing machine, equipped with means embodying my invention. a
Fig. 2 is an end view thereof.
The approved form of construction, illustrated in the drawings, comprises a depending" gravity-held swinging stop 3, mounted to swing freely on a transverse shaft 4 of the can washing machine and set in the path of the tops of cans 5 being discharged therefrom. In the normal operaon of the machine, the cans are placed in the reversing saddle 6 by which they are automatically reversed or upended and dis charged from the machine, sliding down the discharge chute or platform 7 The stop plate 3 is set in the path of the cans as they thus move from the saddle 6, so that the to edges of the cans come in contact with sai stop during their discharge movements. The stop 3 thus yieldingly' resists the discharge and reversing movement sufliciently to lessen the noise and shocks incident thereto, but yields sufiiciently to permit the ready passage of the cans in discharging. By this thereof.
While I have illustrated and described the preferred form of construction for carrying my invention into effect, thisis capable of variation and modification without departing from the spirit of the invention. I, therefore, donot wish to be limited to the but desire to avail myself of such variations and. modifications as come within the scope of the appended-claims.
Having described my invention, what I claim-as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. The combination with the, can discharging mechanism of a can washing machine, of a stopset in the path of a,can being discharged, said stop being arranged to yield and be forced from said path by the can itself, substantially as described.
2. The combination with the 'can discharging mechanism-of a can washing machine, of a gravity-held depending swinging stop, set in the path of a canbeing discharged therefrom, substantially as described.
precise details ofthe construction set forth,
ing swlng ing stop, adapted to contact with -the tops of cans being reversed and discharged therefrom, to yieldingly resist the movement of said 'cans, substantially as described. i
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification in theprese'nce of two subscribing witnesses,
HARRY D. LATHROP.
