MATCH-JARBING MECHANISM FOR BOX-FILLING MACHINES.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Dec. I, IQBI'I.
Application filed. April 10, 1917. Serial No. 160,918.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, Mrc rrnnn PARIDON, a citizen of the "United States, and resident of Barberton, in the county of Summit and 5 State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Match-Jarring -Mechanisms for Box-Filling Machines, of
which the follo ing is a specification.
This inventi n relates to match jarring mechanism for box-filling machines, having reference more especially to machines of the character set out in Letters Patent of the United States No. 836,730, dated Noveinber'27, 1906, wherein a succession of temporary match holders are constructed and arranged to travel ina horizontal path adjacent the discharge portion of a match machine in such a manner as to receive the succeeding rows of matches as rapidly as they are discharged.
The object of my invention is to provide simple and eliicient mechanism whereby the orderly disposition of the matches in thetemporary holders, or other receptacles, is insured; and accordingly, the invention comprises a horizontal member upon which the match holders are supported as they progress in the path of the falling matches, and means for simultaneously vibrating the respective ends of said member vertically and in opposite directions to each other; such means, in the preferred form of embodiment of my invention herein illustrated, includingtwo corresponding disk cams having peripheral high and low portions, and a shaft upon which said cams are arranged in spaced relation to each other with the high and low portions of onecam inhori zontal alinement with the low and high portions respectively of the other cam, aswill be hereinafter described and claimed.
In the drawings Figure 1 is a transverse vertical section through the chain of temporary matchholders and adjuncts of a filling machine embodying my invention, showing the adjacent portion of the match carrier and the. I ejecting'punch of the match machine.
Fig. 2 is a skeleton perspective View, partly in section, of a portion of the guide structure for the temporary match-holders,
showing the agitating mechanism therefor.
Fig. 4 is a plan of the guide structure and the agitating mechanism.
Fig. 5 is a viewof a portion of the chain of temporary holders.
.Referring to the drawings, 1. designates a portion of the main frame of a match making machine; 2 a portion of the match carrier, and 3 a reciprocating punch for ejecting the matches row by row from the carrier. 7 designates a horizontal bed adjacent the discharge portion of the match 10 designates a portion of an endless chain to travel on the guide structure so as to re ceive and assemble the falling matches as rapidly as they are discharged from the carrier. The chain of holders is driven by suitably-spaced and driven sprocket Wheels one of which is indicated at 9.
The floor of the guide structure is provided in front of and adjacent the match carrier with a vertically-movable jarring portion comprising a trough or. run-way compbsed of three sections whereof the main or middle section 27 extends entirely across the front of the matchc irrier and is jointed at its ends, as at at, tothe other, or'shorter sections 28, and the latter arer jointed at their outer extremities, as at yet-Lethe stationary portions of the guide. The section 27 is supported upon the free endsof a pair of arms 29 which are pit'oted to brackets 30 on the bed. These arms have depending ears 31 provided with anti-friction rollers tion of the central trough-section and its end members.
The mechanism above mentioned is 821- cepting as to the relative positions of the cams, the same as the corresponding mech anism set out in the aforesaid Patent No.
836,730 to which reference may be had for a more detailed description. In the patented construction the cams are so relatively arranged on the shaft 34 that their carrier, and 26 an endless guide structure V supported on the bed.
also-to impart to horizontal alinement corresponding peripheral portions are in with each other, and hence the section Q'Zis uniformly raised and lowered throughout its length, thus imparting the same range of vibration to the temporary holders and their contents throughis bein raisedthe other end thereof is being lovvere and vice versa, the actiongradw ally diminishing from the ends toward the median part of the section. Hence the jarring of the temporary holders imposed on the section 27 gradually diminishes as they approach and then gradually increases as they leai h the region of the median portion of the match carrier, compound motion upon the matches contained in the holders is not only to agitate them vertically with a varying throw but them an easy to and fro rolling movement thus insuring the compact and orderly disposition of the matches Within the holders;
The efiect, of this masses While the arrangement above described embodying my invention is exceedingly simple, yet the improved results attained thereby are of great practical importance.
I elain1- l 1. The combination with a match carrier and means for ejecting rows of matches therefrom, of a horizontal support for traveling match holders adjacent the discharge portion of the carrier, and means for simultaneously vibrating the respective ends of the support vertically and in opposite di-' rections to each other:
2. The combinatiop With a match carrier and means for ejecting rows of matches therefrom, of a horizontal support for traveling match holders adjacent the discharge portion of the carrier, and means for simultaneously vibrating the respective ends of the support vertically and in opposite directions to each other, said latter means including two corresponding cams having peripheral high and low portions, and a shaft upon which said cams are arranged in spaced relation to eachother with the high and low portions of one cam in horizontal alinement with the low and high portions respectively of the other cam.
Signed at Barberton, in the county of Sum1nit,and State of Ohio, this 7th day of April, A. D. 1917. j -M IQHAEL PARIDON.
