CAN-REVERSING MECHANISM FOR CAN-WASHING MACHINES.
Specification of Letters Patent. Original application filed February 16, 1917, Serial No. 149,102. Divided and this Patented Apr. 13, 1920.
application filed July 19,
1917. Serial No. 181,565.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, HARRY D. LATHROP and WALTER H. PAULSON, citizens of the United States, and residents of the city of Chicago, county of Cook, and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Can-Reversing Mechanism for Can-Washing Machines, of which the following is a specification.
Our invention relates to improvements in can reversing mechanism for can washing machines, the present application being a division of our pending application, Serial No. 149,102, filed February 16, 1917, for improvements in can washing machines.
The object of this invention is the production of reversing mechanism designed for use in connection with milk can washing machines, which will be rapid and positive 1n operation, one which will permit of manual operation at a minimum exertion on the part of the operator, and one which will be of durable and economical construction.
Other objects will appear hereinafter.
The invention consists in the combinations and arrangements of parts hereinafter described and claimed.
The invention will be best understood by reference to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, and in which,
Figure 1 is a side elevation of a milk can washing machine equipped with can reversing mechanism embodying the invention,
ig. 2, a slightly enlarged vertical long:- tudinal section of the discharge end of t e machine, and
Fig. 3, a detail section taken on line 3-3 of F1 2.
The preferred form of construction as illustrated in the drawings, comprises a suitable framework 10 in which are provided superposed horizontally extendin guides 11 and 12 for the cans and covers tolie cleaned. Suitable mechanism is provided, operable by an oscillatory manually operable lever 13, fulcrumed at 14, for efliecting intermittent feedin or advancing of the cans and covers throng the machine, on the guides 11 and 12. In this intermittent feeding or advancing of the cans and covers through the mach ne, the same are subjected to a cleansing, steril zing and drying process, the mechanism for effecting such treatment of the cans same throu tion of the can reversing and covers and for advancing or feeding the h the machine, not bein claimed in this app ication, and hence detaildescription thereof is omitted.
, After the cans and covers have passed through the cleansing the same are ready for discharge from the machine and to this end are passed from the guides 11 and 12 on to inclined guides 15 and 16, respectively, down which said cans and covers are adapted to slide by gravity. The cans which are designated by the letter A, in the passage of the same along the guide 11, are in an inverted position, and as each can is discharged or pushed from the guide 11, the same drops to osition in a substantially semi-cylindrical formed can reversprocess, as mentioned,
mg member 17 which is arranged at the dishe member 17 is of a size to snugly receive the can, end pieces 19 and- 20 being adapted to engage with the opposite ends of the can to hold the same against relative longitudinal movement. The normal posimember 17, as seen in Fig. 1, is one in which the same is adapted to receive a can discharged from the guide 11. Actuation of said member 17 to effect reversal of the can is effected by means of a toggle,21 fulcrumed at 22, the opposite end of said to gle' being connected at 23 with one end oi said member 17. Actuation of said toggle is efiected by means of a link 24 which is pivotally connected at one end with the lower end of an oscillatory arm 25 fulcrumed intermediate its ends as at 26. The upper end of arm 25 is arranged in the path of a roller 27 carried by a reciprocatory rod 28 having operative connection with the actuating lever 13, the arrangement being.
such that. upon oscillation of said lever 13, rod 28 will be reciprocated to carry the roller 27 into engagement with the upper end of arm 25, causing oscillation of the same to 'shown in Fig. 2.
by gravity.
the can reversing reaches this position, ity therefrom on to down which the same moves The up er end of the arm 25 is offset as at 25' in or or to form a shoulder which will assume horizontal position when the can reversing member 17 is in reversing position as seen in Fig. 2. The movement of the roller 27 is such that, as the can reversin member reaches reversing1 position, sai roller will travel on to the o 25 of the arm 25, as clearly der or portion and thus serve to posiseen in Fig. 2, tively lock said versing member in can reversing position. Said can reversing member will not be permitted to return to initial or can receiving position until the bar 28 carrying the roller 27 is moved rearwardlyzthrough manual tilting of the lever 13. hen this is done the reversing member will rock by gravity back to its initial position to receive another can. Each subsequent can is similarly handled.
In order to lock the reversing member 17 in can receiving osition so as to adapt the same to withstan the rough usage to which the same is subjected by reason of the dropping of a can to position thereon the arran ement and operation of the to gie 21 is suc that the same passes be on deadcenter position in the return roc ing of the reversing member 17. This movement of the toggle to a-position be end the deadcenter is insured by a wei t 24 rovided \li pon one end of the link 24, as clear y seen in 1g. 2. With this arrangement it will be seen that the pressure or weight of the can upon t e reversing member, cannot possibly effect swinging of the reversing member to can reversing position, such swinging of said reversing member being effected only u on breaking of the knee joint of-the to g e which is effected through manual ti twigt of the lever 13 as before described. A er breaking of the knee joint, continued oscillation of the lever 13 causes the oscillatory movement of the reversing memberto efi'ect reversal of the' can. It will thus be seen that the can reversin member is at all times under the control 0 the manually operable lever 13, actuation thereof to or from reversing position being eflected only throu h manual actuation of said lever.
By ocating the axis of the reversing member intermediate the ends thereof, the space rizontal shoularm and hence the can relocked past necessary for the operation of the same, is reduced to a minimum, it being clear that with the axis located at either end of the reversing member, a considerably greater space would be required to allow for the swinging of the member. Also with this arrangement, the parts are so balanced that actuation of the can reversing member may be effected through minimum exertion on the part of the operator, on the control lever 13.
While we have illustrated and described the preferred form of construction for caring ourinvention into effect, this is capab e of variation and modification without ciRe parting from the spirit oi the invention.
e, therefore, the precise details of construction set forth, but desire to avail ourselves of such variations and modifications as come within the scope of the appended claims.
Having described our invention what we claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
1. In a can washing machine, can reversing mechanism comprising an oscillatory elementadapted to receive and reverse a can deposited thereon; means for effecting actuation of said reversing element, said means comprising an oscillatory arm; a reciprocatory member adapted to engage with and rock said arm in actuating said reversing element; and a shoulderon said arm adapted for engagement by said reciprocatory member, when said element is in can reversing position, to lock the same in this position, substantially as described.
2. In a can washin machine, can reversing mechanism comprising an oscillatory element adapted, in the receiving position thereof. to receive a can deposited thereon; means for oscillating said element to reverse the'can, said last mentioned means comprising a toggle; a stop whereby said toggle is dead-centerwhen said reversing member is in receiving position; and means for actuating said toggle, substantially as described.
In testimony whereof we have signed our names to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
