To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that T, GIOVANNI LATTANZIO, a subject of the King of Italy, residing at New York, in the county of New York and State of New York, have invented new and useful Improvements in Safety-Envelops, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to envelops, and has for its object a construction wherein each and all of the flaps are interlocked, in a manner so that the envelop cannot be opened or tampered with by unauthorized persons without destroying the envelop beyond further use.
The nature and advantages of the invention will be better understood when the following detail description is read in connection with the accompanying drawings, the invention residing in the construction, combination and arrangement of parts as claimed.
In the drawings forming part of this application like numerals of reference indicate similar parts in the several views and wherein:
Figure 1 is a blank from which the envelop is formed.
Fig. 2 is a view showing the envelop partly folded with the side flaps in position to be secured together.
Fig. 3 is a similar view showing the sealing tongue of the lowermost flap associated with the side flap.
Fig. 41 is a rear elevation of the envelop completely folded.
Referring to the drawings in detail, 10 indicates the central or body portion of the envelop, and 11 the bottom flap, 12 the side flap, and 13 the closure flap. The bottom flap 11 and side flaps 12 are cut away to provide sealing tongues, the tongue of the bottom flap being indicated at 1 1 while the tongues of the side flaps are indicated at 15. The latter mentioned tongues are out about their edges to provide perforated portions 16. One of the side flaps 12 is out along predetermined lines from the outer edge thereof to provide a sealing tongue 17, this and the above mentioned tongues and perforated portions being provided with an adhesive substance on one side. The closure flap 13 is also provided with an adhesive substance and is to be sealed in the usual well known manner. Manifestly, each side flap 12 is provided with two tongues arranged one within the other, so that when each pair of Specification of Letters Eatent.

tongues is adhesively secured to the outer surface of the sealing fiap13, it is practically impossible to separate both of t 1e tongues without tearing or otherwise injuring one or the other of the tongues to prohibit the further use of these tongues without leaving some extension of the fact that the tongues have been tampered with by unauthorized persons in an effort to open the envelop. In other words, the innermost tongue is confined within the outermost tongue of each palr so that access can not be had to the innermost tongue without first removing the outermost tongue from the seal flap 18 thereby making it very diflicult to separate both tongues from the sealing flap without de-' stroying one or the other of the tongues.
In practice, or use of the envelop, the mail matter is arranged upon the body 10 of the envelop, afterward the bottom flap 11 is folded in the usual manner, except that the sealing tongue 14 is arranged to expose the adhesive side or surface as shown in Fig. 2. The side flaps 12 are then folded upon the bottom flap 11 covering the opening therein defined by the production of the sealing flap 14. The adjacent edges of the side flaps 12 are arranged in overlapping relation, while the sealing tongue 17 overlies the outermost side flap and is adhesively secured thereto as shown in Fig. 8. The closure flap 13 is then folded upon the side flaps 12, then the tongues 15 together with their perforated portions 16 are adhesively secured upon the outer side of the closure flap as shown. The sealing tongue 14.- carried by the end of the fiap 11 is then adhesively secured to the lowermost end portion of the closure flap 13, this tongue together with the tongues 15 and the perforated portion 16 sealing all sides of the closure flaps. The construction is such that all the flaps are interlocked and sealed in a manner so that access may not be had to the interior of the envelop without destroying the latter beyond further use. This manifestly prohibits the opening of the envelop which is usual and quite frequently done.
While it is believed that from the foregoing description the nature and advantages of the invention will be readily apparent, I desire to have it understood that I do not limit myself to the details herein shown and described, and that such changes may be resorted to when desired as fall within th scope of what is claimed.
What I claim is 1. A safety envelop comprising a body portion, a bottom flap, side flaps and a closure flap, a sealing tongue carried by one end of one of the side flaps and adapted to be adhesively secured to the adjacent extremities of the other side flap when these flaps are folded, a plurality of sealing tongues cut from each side flap, the said tongues being arranged one Within the other and adapted to be secured on the exterior of the closing flap when the envelop is sealed.
2. A safety envelop comprising a body portion, a bottom flap, side flaps and a closure flap, a sealing tongue carried by one end of the side flaps and adapted to be adhesively secured to the adjacent extremities of the other side flap when these flaps are folded, a plurality of sealing tongues cut from each side flap, one tongue of each pair lying within the confines of the other tongue and adapted to be secured therewith to the exterior of the closure flap when the envelop is sealed, and a sealing tongue carried by the bottom flap and adapted to be adhesively secured to the adjacent end of the closure flap as described.
