Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented May 21, 1918.
Application filed March 30, 1917. Serial No. 158,676.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, HERBERT A. Bonneron, a citizen of the United States, residing at Newington, in the county of Hartford and State of Connecticut, have invented new and useful Improvements in Envelops, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to envelope and more particularly to those of the safety type designed to prevent surreptitious opening of the envelop without danger of detection.
The invention has for its objects to provide a simplified construction for envelope of this character so they may be comparatively easy and inexpensive to manufacture.
\Vith these and other objects in view which will be hereinafter fully described and particularly pointed out in the claim, the invention consists in the novel construction and arrangement of parts illustrated in the accompan ing drawings forming a part of this speci cation, in which Figure 1 is a rear side elevation of an envelop embodying my invention, the parts thereof being in a sealed relation respecting each other,
Fig. 2 is a vertical sectional end elevation of the same through the line A-A of Fig. 1,
Fig. 3 is a plan view of the blank from which the envelop of Fig. 1 is formed,
Fig. 4 is a view similar to scaling elements spaced from one another.
Like characters of reference indicate like parts in the various views.
In the drawings 1 designates a blank from which an envelop embodying m invention is formed. The envelop is pre erably rectangular in shape and has a rectangular portion 2 thereof forming the front of the envelop. The blank is creased at the ed es of the front, there being a portion of the lank extending from each side of the front, each portion cooperating to form the rear of the envelop. These portions comprise end flaps 3, a bottom flap 4, and a top or sealing flap 5. The end flaps 3 and the bottom ap 4: having overlapping edges which are glued together in the usual manner. The top or sealing flap 5 is adapted to overlie the bot: tom and end flaps adjacent the top edges Fig. 2 with the thereof, and the portion of the inner surface of the top flap 5 which overlies said end and bottom flaps is gummed for sealing the envelop by engaging said grunmed portion of the top flap, as designated at 6, with the end and bottom flap. A series of arcuate slits 7 are formed in the bottom and end flaps and tabs 8 are formed thereby. Said tabs 8 are so disposed with respect to the top flap 5 that when the top flap is in sealing engagement with the end and bottom flaps the tabs will overlie the top flap adjacent the lower edge thereof. The inner surfaces of the tabs 8 are gummed for engagement with the top flap. A series of small tongues 9 are formed on the end and bottom flaps in juxtaposition with the arcuate slits 7 These tongues 9 are formed of extensions of said bottom and end flaps and are positioned by bending them back upon the top edges of said end and bottom flaps. These tongues 9 prevent the gummed surface of the top flap 5 from engaging the matter inclosed within the envelop.
In sealing the envelop the (gummed surface of the top flap is moistene in the usual manner and engaged with the bottom and end flaps, care being taken that the tabs 8 do not underlie said top flap. The gummed surfaces of the tabs are then moistened and engaged with the outer surface of the top Ey the above described construction it will be seen that an envelo is provided which, when once sealed is difficult to open Without tearing or mutilating the envelop, and the construction is such that envelope of this construction may be manufactured cheaply and easily, and that the use of envelops of this construction does not entail extra work in handling the same.
Having thus fully described my invention, 1 claim An envelo comprising a front panel, end flaps foldabe onto said front panel and provided with arcuate slits defining tabs, tongues on the edges of said end flap foldable thereon against the inner side thereof to extend beneath and cover said slits, a bottom flap on the edge of said front panel between said end flaps and provided with engageable beneath the tabs on said end flaps, said tongues preventing contact of the gummed surface of said sealing flap with 10 the matter contained Within the envelop.
In tetifhany whereof I aflix my signature.
HERBERT 1L BOYINGTON.
