SAFETY-ENVELOP.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented A11 24, 1915.
Application filed April 10, 1915. Serial No. 20,507.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, GEORGE A. RUSSELL, a citizen of the United States, residing at Maysville, in the county of Dekalb and State of Missouri, have invented new and useful Improvements in Safety-Envelops, of which the following is a specification.
The present invention contemplates the provision of an envelop wherein the mail matter may be transported in safety.
Specifically stated the invention aims to provide an envelop wherein the bottom flap is provided with side extensions adapted to be folded thereupon, and between which parts the closure flap is adapted to be inserted and adhesively secured to said extensions, subsequent to the folding of the bottom flap upon the body of the envelop, whereupon the bottom flap is adhesively secured to said closure flap, and the side flaps subsequently secured upon the former, thus producing an envelop which cannot be opened without destroying the same, and thereby affording considerable amoimt of protection during transportation of mail matter.
In the drawing forming part of this application like numerals of reference indicate similar parts in the several views and wherein:
Figure 1 is a plan view of the envelop unfolded. Fig. 2 is a view of the envelop partly folded. Fig. 3 is a similar view with the closure flap in folded position. Fig. 4 is a sectional view of the envelop complete.
The envelop forming the subject matter of my invention comprises a main body portion 5, side flaps 6, a bottom flap 7 from the opposite side edges of which project the extensions 8 of the same relative width as the flap 7, and a closure flap 9. All the side flaps are provided along their marginal edges with an adhesive substance, to permit sealing of the parts when folded.
When it is desired to use the envelop, the extensions 8 are first folded upon the bottom flap 7, and the latter subsequently folded upon the body portion 5. The mail matter is then arranged between the said extensions and the body portion 5, and the closure flap 9 then inserted between the extensions 8 and the bottom flap 7 and adhesively secured along its free edge to the extensions 8, the closure flap being of substantially the same area as the body portion 5, it will be obvious that the free edge is arranged along the lower edge of the latter. The upper edge of the bottom flap 7 is then adhesively secured to the outer face of the closure flap 9 adjacent its opposite longitudinal edge.
The side flaps 6 while substantially of triangular formation, have a straight lower edge adapted to be adhesively secured along one marginal edge of the bottom flap 7, to the outer surface and immediately above the free edge of the closure flap 9, thus serving as an additional covering for the latter, which materially increases the strength of the envelop. But by reason of the specific arrangement of the various parts, the latter in their entirety produce an envelop which cannot be steamed or otherwise opened without mutilating the parts, thus affording ample evidence that the same has been tampered with, should an attempt be made by an unauthorized person to open the envelop.
It is believed that from the foregoing description the nature and advantages of the invention. will be readily apparent without requiring a more extended explanation and therefore the same has been omitted.
What is claimed is An envelop comprising a body portion, side flaps, a bottom flap, extensions projecting from the opposite side edges of the bottom flap and adapted to be folded thereupon, a closure flap adapted to be inserted between said extensions and bottom flap, said closure flap having an area equal to the combined area of said extensions and having its free edge adhesively secured thereto adjacent the lower edges of said extensions, the upper edge of said bottom flap being adhesively secured to the outer face of the closure flap along the opposite longitudinal edge thereof, and said side flaps being adapted to be folded upon the bottom flap and adhesively secured thereto immediately above the free edge of the closure flap for the purpose described.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
GEORGE A. RUSSELL.
