IMPROVEMENT IN FANS.

Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 137,413, dated April 1, 1873; application filed February 12, 1873.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, GUSTAV BRUECK, of the city, county, and State of New York, have invented anew and useful Improvementin Fans 5 and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description thereof, which will enable those skilled in the art to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawing forming part of this specification, in which drawing Figure 1 represents a sectional side view of my fan when the same is closed and secured in its scabbard. Fig. 2 is a sectional elevation of the fan when the same is open.

This invention consists in the combination of a tapering dagger-shaped scabbard with a fan, the handle of which is provided with flanges overlapping the edges of the scabbard, while the body of the fan, when closed up, fits said scabbard, and when the fan is drawn out it unfolds automatically. The fan is constructed of two folding sections, the inner end of each of which is secured to a central rod extending from the handle, while their outer ends are fastened to leaves which are hinged to the handle and subjected to the action of springs in such a manner that by turning the outer leaves up toward the central rod the springs are strained and the fan is closed, and by releasing the outer leaves the fan is spread automatically by the action of the springs.

In the drawing, the letter A designates my fan, which is composed of two folding sections, B G. The inner edge of each of these sections is secured to a central rod, D, which extends from the handle E, while the outer ends of said sections are fastened each to a separate leaf, F, which is hinged to a projection, G, of the handle. The two levers F F are connected by a spring, H, or each may be subjected to the action of a separate spring so arranged that when the fan is free to follow the action of said spring or springs the leavesF F are turned down to the position shown in Fig. 2, and the two sections of the fan are unfolded.

When my fan is folded it fits a scabbard, I, which is provided with eyes or rings a to receive a chain, b, by means of which the same can be suspended from a waist-belt or other part of a ladys dress. The handle E of the fan is provided with side flanges c, which overlap the edges of the scabbard, and impart to the device, when inserted into said. scabbard, a proper finish.

v When the fan is withdrawn from the scabbard it unfolds automatically, ready for use.

' What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-

1. The combination of a scabbard, T, with the detachable fan A, which unfolds automatically 011 being withdrawn from said scabbard, substantially as described.

2. A fan composed of two folding sections, B G, which are connected at their inner ends to a central rod, D, and at their outer ends to leaves F F hinged to the handle, and subjected to the action of a spring, substantially in the manner and for the purpose set forth.
