IMPROVEMENT IN FANS.

The Schedule referred to in these Letters Patent and making par?.` ox the same.

To all whom it may concern invention when the fan is unfolded.

Figure 2 is a transverse section of the same when i the fan-leaf is folded.

Similar letters indicate corresponding parts.

This invention consists in the arrangement of a spring and guide-rod in combination with the central head of a fan-leaf, and with radiating arms provided with guide-slots, catching over pins, which are secured in the frame of the fan, in such a manner, that by pushing the head down against the action of the spring, the fan-leaf is folded up by the action of the slotted arms, and by releasing the head, the fan-leaf is automatically unfolded by the action of the spring.

In the drawing- The letter A designates a fan-leaf, made of paper, muslim, or any other suitable material capable of being folded up and expanded, as shown.

Said leaf is secured to a central head, a, which slides in and out between the two side-pieces of the frame B, and from which extends a. button, b, through a. slot, c, in one of said pieces, so that said head can be readily operated.

To the edges of the fan-leaf are secured the radiating arms d, which are rigid, and 'serve to stiffen the fan-leaf, and which are provided with guide-slots e, catching over pins f, which are ligidly secured in the frame B.

As thehead tt is pushed down toward the handle Cof the frame B, the arms d are made to slide over the pins f, and they are finally turned, and thereby the fan-leaf is folded up between the two side pieces of the frame B, as shown in iig. 2, and as the head a is moved out away from the handle C, the arms d are reversed,and the fan-leaf is unfolded, as shown in fi r. 1.

From the head a extends a rod, l, which is provided with a collar, g, that presses against the end of a spring, h, enclosedin'the hollow handle O, andasthe head 1s pushed downtoward the handle, the spring is compressed. In this Iposition the head is retained by a spring-catch, t, which is secured to the outside of the frame B, and which catches into a hole Vin a plate,l i

j, fastened to the head.

By pressing on the spring-catch, the head a is released, and the spring h carries the same back to the position shown iu fig. 1, causing the fan-leaf to unfold automatically.

When the fan-leaf is folded, and the head retained by the spring-catch t', the fan can be conveniently carried in the pocket, and by a slight pressure on the spring-catch, the fan-leaf unfolds, and the fan is ready for use.

What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-

The combination, with the head a, slotted arms d, and fan A, of the spring h and rod l, substantially as and for the purpose described.
