UMBRELLA OR PARASOL.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 446,5}2, dated February 17, 1891.

Application filed October 18, 1890. Serial No. 368,554. (No model.)

To all whom, it may concern:

Be it known that I, CHRISTOPHER J. SWART, acitizen of the United States, and a resident of Goshen, in the county of Elkhart and State of Indiana, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Parasols and Umbrellas; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the ac companying drawings, and to letters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.

Figure 1 of the drawings is a side view of the umbrella. Fig. 2 is a perspective view of the coupling or hinge with braces, &c. Fig. 3 is a view of the coupling-blank.

This invention has relation to folding umbrellas and parasols; and it consists in the novel construction and combination of parts, as hereinafter set forth.

The object of the invention is to adapt the various parts composing the umbrella to be folded in such manner that the latter shall occupy but halfthe space of an umbrella constructed in the usual manner when folded.

In the accompanying drawings, the letter A designates the handle of the umbrella, provided about midway with a break-jolnt or hinge b to adapt it to be folded.

B 13' designate the bow or rib made in two sections, the upper section B having oneend 0 attached to the handle in the usual manner and the other end clamped or otherwise suitably secured within the folds d of a coupling C. The other bow-section B is pivoted between lugs c of the coupling 0,. and extends down in the same plane for attachment to the cover in the usual manner.

The braces D D are connected centrally in a manner similar to the bows above mentioned, and are secured to the bows and the sleeve or slide G, as in ordinary umbrellas.

The coupling 0 is constructed from a single blank of sheet metal, which is cut and folded to adapt it to the purpose designed for itthat is, to form at one end the frictional spring-clasp f, said clasp having its horizon tal edges bent over against the outer sides to aiford a rounded smooth passage for receiving and holding the hinged section of the bow or brace when the umbrella is raised.

Between the clasp f and the folds d of the coupling 0 are formed the lugs 6, between which is pivoted the hinged section of the bow or brace.

\Vhen the umbrella is raised, the hinged sections B and D of the bows and braces, respectively, are held longitudinally within their clasps f, the latter being open above or in the direction of raising the umbrella, as shown in the drawings. \Vhen the umbrella is to be folded or lowered the slide or sleeve G is disengaged from the stops lb of the handle and is run downwardly on the latter, thereby releasing the hinged sections of the bow and brace simultaneously from the clasps of the couplings. This operation causes all the hinged sections to fold together against the handle, for as the braces D D fold together their action draws over against them the bow-sections B,and this movement, aided by the pressure of the umbrella-covering, causes the other hinged bow-sections B to fold over against the outside of the umbrella, thus bringing all the hinged parts in. nearly parallel relation to each other. The handle may now be folded over the whole and secured over the tip in any suitable manner.

Thus it will be observedacompactandhandy package results, about half the length of the ordinary folded umbrella.

hat I claim as my invention is 1. An umbrella having its braces and bows made each in two sections, one of said sections of each brace and bow being hinged and the other rigidly secured to a metallic coupling, said coupling having a frictional clasp, whereby the umbrella is adapted to be held open and folded alternately, substantially as shown and described.

2. In a folding umbrella, the combination, with the coupling 0, having the frictional clasps f, lugs c, and fold d, of the bow and brace sections B D, pivoted to said lugs and adapted to engage said clasps, the rib and bow sections B D, rigidly secured in said fold of the sliding sleeve G and the handle, substantially as specified.
