To all whom it may concern.

Be it known that I, EDWARD H. GALLIGAN, a citizen of the United States, residing at New York city, borough of Manhattan, and State of New York, have invented new and useful Improvements in Hammers, of which the following is a specification.

This invention relates to improvements in hammers.

The object of the invention is to provide a hammer head with means for removably holding a nail, in order that the nail may be started without necessitating the use of both hands, leaving one hand free for other purposes.

A further object is the provision of a hammer in which the claw is ofiset or out of alinement with the nail driving portion, in order to provide an offset fulcrum shoulder for use in drawing nails.

A still further object of the invention is the provision of a hammer head in which the nail holding means is located opposite the nail driving portion, in order that the said nail. driving portion will provide additional weight at this point, to aid in the initial driving of the nail.

With these and other objects in View the invention consists of the following novel combination and arrangement of parts, hereinafter more fully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawings and pointed out in the appended claim.

In the embodiment of the invention here in illustrated, there is provided a hammer head which includes a body portion 10, which is provided with an opening 11 therethrough for the purpose of receiving the handle 12in the usual manner. The body portion 10 is formed at one side thereof with a nail driving portion 13, of the formation shown, or of any other desired shape.

Upon the opposite side of the body por tion, there is formed a substantially straight surface 14, in order to provide for the formation of a. transversely arranged nail holding slot 15. This slot extends approximately one-half the width of the hammer head and is in communication with oppositely disposed grooves 16, so that the slot is in effect T-shaped in cross section. This provides for the reception of the head of the nail 17 shown by dotted lines in Fig. 1. By inserting the nail in the manner shown, it may be given its initial start and the hammer with drawn from engagement therewith the driving being continued by reversing the hammer and using the nail driving portion 13 in the ordinary manner.

Located adjacent the surface la is a claw 18, which is constructed in the usual manner for the purpose of pulling nails. By locating the claw in the manner shown, that is, out of alinement with the nail driving portion 13, there is provided the offset fulcrum shoulder 19, which is adapted for use in pulling nails as illustrated in Fig. 2 of the drawings.

By the use of this shoulder a long nail may be entirely removed without the neces sity of inserting a block beneath the hammer head for the purpose of increasing the leverage.

It is believed from the foregoing that the construction and advantages of the invention will be apparent and the right is reserved to make such changes in the form and proportion as will fall within the scope of the appended claim.

Having described the invention, what is claimed, is;

A hammer head comprising a body provided with a transversely disposed eye, said body having a striking portion located at one side of the eye, the body being provided at the opposite side of the eye with claws and an offset shoulder, the body having a slot located in the shoulder portion, said slot being disposed transversely of the eye. and having an inner wall disposed at a right angle to the length of the striking portion, said slot leading in from one side oi the body and having its inner end closed and approximately in alinement with the median longitudinal dimension of the striking portion.
