JAMES DEWITT HARDY, 0F SALT LAKE CITY, UTAH.
HAMMER.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Aug. 9, 1921.
Application filed. November 25, 1919. $eria1 No. 340,519.
T 0 all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JAMES Dnwrr'r HARDY, a citizen of the United States, residing at Salt Lake City, in the county of Salt Lake and State of Utah, have invented new and useful Improvements in Hammers, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to attachments for hammers, and has for an object the provision of means, which may be secured to the head of a hammer to provide additional leverage for use in pulling nails.
Another object is the provision of an attachment of this character, which may be folded compactly against the hammer head, so as not to interfere with the use of the hammer in close or restricted places.
Another object of the invention is the provision of an attachment having the above and other characteristics, which is simple and durable in construction and operation and capable of attachment to hammers 0 various kinds.
In the drawings:
Figure 1 is a side elevation of a hammer with the attachment applied thereto, the hammer being shown in the initial stage of pulling a nail with the attachment folded against the hammer head.
Fig. 2 is a view similar ing the attachment in use.
Fig. 8 is an elevation at right angles to to Fig. 1 show- Fig. 2.
eferring to the drawings in detail, like characters of reference denote the corresponding parts throughout the several views. The invention is capable of attachment to hammers of difierent forms, the one shown having an elongated cylindrical striking head 10, and a claw 11 located at the opposite end of the head.
The attachment which is in the form of a yoke 12, has the extremities of its legs 13 formed into eyes 14.. These eyes are designed to receive screws or like fastening cross section so as portion, spaced devices 15, by means of which the attachment may be secured to the hammer head.
The legs 13 of the attachment are secured upon opposite sides of the head of the hammer and'are connected by a base 16, which is adapted to form a rest for the hammer when the attachment is in use to provide aid:
'ditional leverage for pulling long nails, as
illustrated in Fig. 2 of the drawing. The base 16 is preferably concavo-convex in to fit around the cylindrical portion 10 of the hammer head and to ermit of its being folded compactly against the head of the hammer when not in use. This permits of the ordinary use of the hammer in close or restricted corners, when used for driving nails.
The invention is susceptible of various changes in its form, proportions and minor details of construction, and the right is herein reserved to make such changes as f properly fall within the scope of the appended claims.
Having described the invention what is claimed is 1. The combination with a hammer, of a yoke, means whereby the bifurcated ends of the yoke may be secured upon each side of the hammer head and a leverage base formed at the opposite end of said yoke, said base being cross sectionally shaped to fit the head of the hammer when the yoke is folded against said head.
2. The combination with a hammer, of a yoke including a base portion of arcuate formation adapted to fit around the head of the hammer, a flat face for said base arms extending through the base and offset apertured ears pivotally secured upon opposite-sides of the hammer head, whereby the yoke may be folded against the head or pivotally adjusted to provide a fulcrum.
In testimony whereof I afiix my si 'nature.
JAMES DEWITT- I-IA DY.
