Description
L. PORTEOUS. BUMPER FOR BOATS.
APPLICATION FILED MAIL l, 1929.
Patented Dec. 14, 1920.
U I ED s'rA'ras LEONARD romance, or snaaon, rnmtsnvmm PATENT OFFICE.
n'umraa roa nous To all whom it concern:
Be it known that I, LEONARD Pon'mo s, a citizen of the United States of America, residin at Sharon, in the county of Mercer and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Bumpers for Boats, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to bumpers for boats which consists of an air chamber having suitable lugs and suitable means for engaging said lugs to the side of a boat.
. Figure 1 designates a boat with my.improved bumper attached thereto,
Fig. 2 shows a side elevation of the bumper, the side of the boat being in section,
Fig. -3 shows a modified form of the bumper used for the end of the boat,
Fig. 4 shows a pear-shaped bumper of similar construction,
Fig. 5 is a sectional view of the modified form of my invention having looped lug attaching means, and
Fig. 6 is an enlarged view of the attaching means.
Fig. 7 is a view of abelt which may be applied to fasten the bumper about the body 0 a erson.
Re erring to the drawings like numerals designate like parts in the various drawings.
7 indicates a boat of any design on whlch bumpers are usually used to keep the boat from rubbing against the side walls of locks or other places where the boat will be passing through and where otherwise the boat would become damaged if allowed to rub thereagainst.
In my improved bumper I provide an air chamber 8, which may be made of any su1table material, having an opening at one end and the valve 9 attached thereto, which valve is protected by the usual cap 10. The air chamber 8 is inflated through the valve 9.
Suitably attached to the an chamber 8 I provide lugs 11 which may be of any desirable shape adaptable for the purpose of attaching the air chamber to the side of a boat. These lugs are preferably provided with the receiving portion of a glove fastening member 12 while on the side of the boat 'at predetermined positions are the stud portions 14, which are adapted to be recelved into the receiving portions 12. The stud portions 14 are provided with openings 15 in which suitable screws or nails can be 1nas a life preserver.
Specification of Letters Patent. Patented D 14 1920 9 0 Application filed larch 1, 1920. Serial 1E0. 362,394.
I do not wish to limit myself to the particular design of air chamber 8 as shown in Fig. 2, as it might be formed in the shape as shownun Flg. 3 as at 8 which particular shape 1s found most adaptable for the front of a boat.
I do not wish to limit myself to the articular fasteningmeans as illustrated in ig. 6, as 111 some cases the bumper is attached to the end of a rope so that it can be thrown over the side of a boat in navigation urposes when coming through locks an is drawn up as soon as the boat passes through the locks. Such a bumper is illustrated in Flgs. 4 and 5. The lug 11 in this instance is provided with a 100 ed end so that a rope may pass therethrougii.
I wish further to explain that with such bumpers being used on boats that they practical y become life-saving devices in case of a wreck, which is of great assistance atisuch a time. In Fig. 7 1' illustrate a belt which belt is provided with studs 14", which studs are similar to the studs 14 and are positloned apart at a redetermined distance so that in the case 0 a wreck the air chamber 8 can be detached from the side of the boat and the receiving portions 12 snapped over the studs 14;. The belt can then be attached around the body of a erson and thus used 11 a similar manner the belt can be passed through the looped ends of the lugs 11 as illustrated in Fig. 5 and the belt pamed around a persons body to act as a life preserver.
From the foregoing it is thought that the construction of my invention will be clearly understood, and, therefore, a more extended explanation has been omitted.
What I claim as new and desire to secure.
going through locks or air in said chamber, a cap covering said I valve, lugs attached to the side of said chamber, a receiving member of a glove fastening device Positioned in said lugs, stud portion V of a g ove fastening device suitably positioned on a boat and adapted to receive said receiving member so as to hold said air chamber in a detachable manner to said boat.
3. A bumper for a boat consisting of an air tight chamber, an opening into said chamber, a valve adapted to receive and hold 15 In testimony whereof I afiix my signature 20 in the presence of two Witnesses.
