i To all whom it may concern v. UNITED v sr T s PATENT. ()FFIOE- JOH SCHOENING, or KENOSHA, WISCQNSIN.
' 7PRQTECTQR.
'- ;Be,it'known that I,J0HN SGIPVIOENFING, a
citizen ofthe United States, residing at Kenosha, in :the county of Kenosha and .State of Wisconsin, have invented certaln new and useful Improvements in Protectors, of fwhich the following is av spec fication,
, reference being had to the accompanying drawings.
,yThis invention relates Q to new and useful improvements in protectors and 'more particularly to a 'deviceadapted to be used in connection with harness, the main obj ectof thepresentinvention being the provision of a protecting device'adapted to be usedin connection with akcollar or a back-strap,
, collar.
,wherebyto protect a sore 'or irritated surface,.upon the animals body and relieve the same of all contactwiththe other portion of the harness. a
. Another object of the present invention is the provision. of. a protector of the above character which will possessadvantages in points of eif ciencyanddurability, is inexpensive to manufacture and, at the same time, is simple in construction and operation. r
With the above and other objects inview, the invention consists in the novel features of, construction, combination and arrangement of parts as will be hereinafter referred .to;and more particularlypointed out in the vided adjacent each longitudinal edge thereof with the spaced alined slots 2, the
purpose of which will be hereinafter more fullyset forth. Secured to the outer surface of the body, 1, is a plate 3, the ends of which are curved upwardly as shown ate to provide stops, adapted to engage the .sides of the collar or back band to prevent any sliding movement of the same when the Specification of Letters Patent. 7

, Application filed October 7, 1914. Serial No. 865,539;
' protector is placed between the body of the animal and the collar or back band. In order to further retain the collar or back band against movement upon the protector, I provide securing straps 5, the inner ends of which are secured to the body 1., upon opposite sides of the center and at one end thereof, and are adapted to engage suitable buckles 6 which are secured by means of the straps 6 to' one end of theprotector, upon opposite sides of the center. It will be apparent that after the protector has been placed in position upon theanimalS body, the collar, or back band will then be engaged over the central portionthereof and securely held inposition by means of the strap 5 and the curved ends of the .Arranged beneath the body 1, is a protecting pad 7, which is of substantially the same shape as the bodyand formed ofany suitable material, such as leather, wool or the like, fbut preferably ofstiif leather, as; indicated 'inj the accompanying drawing and is providedfat its central portion with an opening 8. It will be further notedv that the body of. the protecting pad 7 isarranged in spacedrelation with the metallic body 1, whereby to provide foran air space between the body 1 and the bodyof the animal, to which the same is applied so that the irritated surface may be exposed tothe Secured to the side walls of the pad 7, are the plates 9 which are provided with threaded openings 10 adapted to receive the inner ends of the threaded bolts 11, said bolts being carried by the outer plate 12 and adapted to extend through the slots 2 in the body 1. From this it will be apparent that by loosening the bolts 11, the pad 7 may be adjusted longitudinally with respect to the body 1, without moving the body 1 from its effective position.
From the above description, it will be readily apparent that in the application of my improved protector, the inner pad 7 is placed over the sore or irritated place, so" I that the opening 8 is arranged directly over the irritated place, whereby none of the parts of the harness or the protector will come in contact with the same and it will be noted that by having the opening 8 therein and by providing a chamber between the pad 7 and the body 1, a thorough circulation of air can pass between the body and the protector so placed in position, the pad 7 can be adjusted longitudinally with respect to the body 1,
by loosening the screw bolts 11. It will also beapparent from the foregoing description, taken in connection with the accompanying drawing, that I have provided asimple and durable protecting'pad for use in connection with strap harness, whereby to protect a sore or irritated place upon an animals body. It Will also beapparent that the portion of the harness to which my pad is applied will be securely fastened to the padby means of the straps 5 and the buckles 6.
My improved pad, as herein shown and described, is extremely simple in construction and can be imanufactured and placed upon'the market at a comparatively low cost.
lVhile 'I have shown and described the "preferred formof my invention, it will be obvious that various changes in the details of construction andin the proportions may be resorted to for successfully carrying my invention into practice, without sacrificing any of the novclfeatures or departing from the scope of the invention, as defined by the appended claims.
Having thus described this invention, what I claim is: g
1. A device of the classdesc'ribed including a -Ushaped metallic body member having alined slots formed adjacent each edge thereof, a protecting pad of substantially the same shape as the body'member and adapted to be arranged within the body emember and in spaced relation thereto, and
1 means adjustably arranged Within said slots f to connect the pad with the body member, as and. for thepurpose set forth.
2. A device ofthe class described includsame shape as the -body member andfpIO- vided with a central opening, said protecting pad being arranged in spaced relation with the inner walls of the body member. to form a chamber "between. thepad andathe body member, plates carried by the side walls of the pad, plates arranged uponjthe outer side of the metallic body member and screw bolts extended" through the slots and engaged with the said plates, wherebysaid pad may be longitudinally adjusted-with respect'to the metallic body member, as and for the purposeset forth. t
3. A device of the class describedincluding a metallic body member, a protecting pad mounted-upon the inner side thereof and in spaced relationtherewith, saidpad I being provided with a central openingcommunicating with the, space between the pad posite ends of'the pad, screw bolts efxtended through the slots inthe body member and to the body member, and securing straps carried' by the body member, as and for the purpose set forth.
In testimony whereof I hereunto afiiX my signature in the'presenceoftwo Witnesses.
