a citizen of the United States of America,

and resident of Philippi, county of Barbour,

and State of West Virginia, have invented certain new and usefullmprovements 1n;

Suspenders, of which the following is a specification.

This invention relates broadly to suspenders, and more particularly to an elastic end for suspenders.

The primary object of the invention is to provide a simple and inexpensive end construction for suspenders which affords the requisite amount of elasticity and which, consequently, permits of dispensing with the employment of the usual elastic webbing in the body of the suspender.

A further object is to provide a resilient tension device for suspenders having a construction affording remarkable etliciency and exceptional durability.

In describing the invention in detail, reference is herein had. to the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is a partial sectional view of a Suspender end embodying the invention;

Fig. 2 is an edge view of the same; and-- Fig. 3 is a partial longitudinal section.

Referring to said drawings, 1 indicates back upon itself and attaching the doubled over portion 3 to the portion 4 located rearward thereof, as by rows of stitching extending across the upper end of the portion 3 and along the opposite lateral edges of the portions 3 and 4c.

suspended centrally within the pocket 2 is a loop 5 of tape or other suitable flexible material having its'ends suitably attached at the upper end of the pocket, as by means of the same stitching which secures the upper end of the webbing portion 2 in place. A transversely disposed bar 6 has a supporting bail 7 of inverted-U shape fixed thereto, and the tape of the loop 5 is passed through said bail so that said bar is supported by said loop, the latter having such length that said bar is supported at the extreme lower end of the pocket. loop end 10 located outside said'pocket. Said end members of the cord extend upward and inward and meet between the members of the loop 5 at a point adjacent to the upper end of the pocket. The meetlng ends are secured together by means of a clamp 11. Disposed in encircling relation to each of said end members and interposed between said clamp 11 and the bar 6 is a coil compression spring 12.

As is obvious, the bar '6 serves as a spreader whereby the members of the looped cord 10 are maintained separated to the extent that the springs 12 carried thereby do not interfere one with the other, and also whereby said members are maintained in positions in which" they may freely pass through the eyes 9,

From the foregoing it will be understood that a downward pull on the looped cord 10, or an upward pull on the webbing strap 1, results in placing the two springs 12 under compression, the coupled or clamped ends of the loop members being actuated to move downward toward the bar 6 against the tension ,of said springs.

hat is claimed is- 1. A suspender comprising an inelastic webbing shaped to form a pocket which has eyes formed in its lower end, a member depending within said pocket, a bar suspended upon said member at the lower end of said pocket, said bar having eyes in its opposlte ends in register with the eyes in said pocket, a looped cord with its loop-end located outside said pocket and having its opposite end portions extending through the register- .ing eyesof said pocket and said bar into the interior of said pocket, means connecting the upper ends of said end portions, and coil compression springs encircling said end portions and interposed between said connecting means and said bar.

2. A suspender comprising an inelastic webbing: shaped to form a pocket at an end thereof and having eyes formed therein at the lower end of said pocket, a bar disposed transversely in said pocket adjacent to the lower end thereof, means suspending said bar, said bar having eyes in register with those in the pocket, a looped cord with its loop-end located outside said pocket and having its opposite end portions extending upward through said registering eyes and thence convergently lncllne'd into meeting relation, ,means connecting said meeting ends, and coil compression springs carried .by said end portions between said connecting means i and said bar.
