Specification of Letters I'atent.
Application filed August 13, 1919; Serial no. 317,103.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that L'VVAITMAN D. Comm, a citizen of the United States of America, and resident of Philippi, county of Barbour and State of West Virginia, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Suspenders, of which the following is a specification. I
This invention relates broadly to suspenders and like garment supports, and more particularly to an elastic connecting device for such supports.
The primary object of the'invention is to provide a suspender having in its straps resilient devices which afford the elasticity necessary in such garment supports and which, therefore, does not require that such straps be composed of elastic webbing.
With this and other objects in view, the invention resides in the features of construction which will hereinafter be explained, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 is a front elevation of an attaching end of a suspender, partially cut away, showing my invention;
Iiig. 2 is a section on the line 22, Fig. 1; anc-- Fig. 3 is an enlarged top plan view of the suspender yoke.
In said drawings, 1 designates an inelastic webbing which is doubled back upon itself and stitched down at its end and along its lateral edges to form a pocket 2. Suit ably secured at its upper end and depending centrally within said pocket is a cord 3 to the lower end of which is attached, as by a clamp 4, the middle portion of a transverse plate or yoke 5. Provided in the opposite ends of said yoke, which occupies a position at or adjacent to the lowermost part of said pocket, are eyes 6 which register with holes or eyes 7 provided in the webbing at the lower end of said pocket.
Extending upward intothe pocket through the registering eyes 6 and 7 are the two similar end portions 8 of a flexible looped cord which has attached thereto at a point outside said pocket a metal clamp 9 whereby is formed in its lowermost part a loop 10 adapted for the reception of a button or other attaching member, as 11, carried by a runner 12 wh1ch has slidably mounted therein a running cord 13 having the usual the ends of button-receiving loops 1d at its opposite ends. 1
Each of the opposite ends of the looped cord has an enlargedterminal 15 which may be formed by knotting such end or by applying thereto a metal clamp, and encircling each end portion 8 and interposed between the said terminal thereof and the yoke is a coil compression spring 16.
As is obvious, tension applied to the lower end ofthe looped cord places the two springs 16 under equal tension, the end portions 8 being drawn downward through the registering eyes 6 and 7 in the yoke and pocket.
From the foregoing it will be apparent that a suspender embodying the invention not only possesses the requisite elasticity, but also is simple and comparatively inexpensive to manufacture and possesses increased durability over suspenders composed of webbing embodying the usual rubber elastic.
What is claimed is 1. A suspender comprising a pocket, a member suspended in a central position within said pocket, a transverse yoke supported upon the lower end of said member adjacent to the lower end of said pocket, said yoke having eyes in its opposite ends, a looped cord having end portions directed upward into said pocket and extending through the eyes of said yoke, enlarged terminals on the ends of said end portions, and a coil compression spring carried in encircling relation to each of said end portions, said springs being interposed between said yoke and said terminals. 7
2. A suspender comprising a pocket, a member suspended. in a central position within said pocket, a transverse yoke suspended upon said member adjacent to the lower end of said pocket, said yoke having an eye in each of its ends, a looped cord having its looped portion located below said pocket and having its end portions directed upward into said pocket and through the eyes of said yoke, said end portions being disposed at opposite sides of said depending member and being provided with enlarged terminals, and a coil compression spring encircling each of said end portions and interposed between the terminal thereof and said transverse yoke.
3. An elastic'connection of the character Patented 0ct.,19, 1920.
enlarged terminals,
cord and occupying a transverse position within and adjacent to the bottom of said I socket said voke havin e es in its 0 oosite ends in register with those in the pocket, a looped cord having its end portions directed upward into said pocket through said registering eyes, said end portions having and coil compression springs carried by said end portions interposed between said terminals and said yoke.
4. An elastic connection of the character described, comprising a webbing shaped to form a pocket, and having separated eyes therein at the bottom of said pocket, a cord suspended centrally within said pocket, a yoke suspended on said cord adjacent to the lower part of said pocket, said yoke having its middle portion rigidly attached to said cord and having eyes formed therein at opposite sides of its connection with said cord and in registering relation with the eyes in said pocket, a looped cord having its end portions directed upward into said pocket through said registerin eyes and provided with enlarged terminals, and compression springs interposed between said terminals and said yoke.
5. A suspender comprising a pocket, a member suspended in a central position Within said pocket, a transverse yoke suspended on the lower end of said member adjacent to the lower end of said pocket, said yoke having eyes in its opposite ends, a looped cord having its looped portion located outside said pocket and having its end portions directed upward into said pocket and through the eyes of said yoke, abutments carried at the upper ends of said end portions, and a coil compression spring disposed in encircling relation to each of said end portions, said springs having their lower ends seated on said yoke and their upper ends resting against said abutnients.
In testimony whereof, I aflix my signature in presence of tWo subscribing witnesses.
