COMBINED COAL ANB GAS RANGE.
'Specication of Letters Patent.
Patented July 27,1920.
Application filed March 13, 1920. Serial No. ,365,56'7.
To all whom t may concern;
Be it known that I, GEORGE F. BIBB, a citizen of the United States, residing'in Troy, New York, have invented certain mprovements in Combined Coal and Gas Ranges, of which the ollowin is a specification.
My invention rehites to certainimprovements in the oven bnrne'r construction of a combined gas and coal range.
@ne object of the invention vis to provide means for simultaneously closing the top andr bottom of the burner chamber. Y
A further object of the invention is to provide sliding closures, which are connected together and which can be actuated 'from the front of the range. v V
A still further object of the invention is to provide means for preventing the turning of the gas valve when the'burner chamber is closed and automatically releasing thel valve when the closures are moved away 'from the Opening.`
In the accompanying drawings:
Figure 1 is a vsectionalviewon the line 1,-'1,'Fig. 2, showingthe burner chamber open;
Fig. 2 isa sectional elevation of the lower portion of a range o n the line 2 2, Fig. 1, showing the burner chamber open;
Fig. 3 is a sectional view, similar to Fig. 2, s howing the entire oven and illustrating the burner chamber closed; Y
Fig. 4 is a sectional elevation on the line 44',`Fig. 3; and
Fig.n 5 is ay detached perspective view of the burner chamber closures. t
Referring to the drawings, 1 is the base of the range, in the present instance.4 2 is the oven. 3 is the back plate of the range. 4 is the front plate. 5 is the top plate of the oven. 6 is the bottom plate of the'oven and 7 is the bottom plate of the range formed integral with the base 1 and 'spaced from the oven bottom 6 to form va flue 8 for the passage ofl the products of combustion, lwhich pass from an upper flue 9 to the top plate of the oven 5 and a side lue 10 atthe side of the oven, as clearly shown in Fig.' 4.
11 is the oven door of theusual yconstruction and 12 is the hearth plate projecting from the range directly below the oven door. 13Vis a'casing located in the flue Y8 between the bottom plate 7 of the range and the'bottom plate 6 of the oven. This casing incloses the burner opening 14. Located in this opening is a gas burner 15 shaped, in the presentV instance, as shown in Figs. '1 andV 4. This burner'has a neck 16 which extends ,to the front of the lrange and is enlarged at V17 to form an'air intake chamber. Extending into this enlarged portion is a gas pipe 18 having a valve 19 and connected to the main gas supply pipe 20. The valve 19.11a's handle `21.
22 is a sliding cover plate, which an opening 23 in the bottom plate 6 of the range, as shown in Fig. 3, and forms an upper closure for the burner opening 14. 24 is a sliding plate arranged to close-an opening 25 in the bottom plate 7 of the range, as shown in Fig. 3. This plate closes the'lower portion ofthe burner opening, as clearly shown ,in Fig. 3. Secured in vposition under the plate 7 is a flanged, recessed plate- 26 having openings 27 for the admission of air, which arel at the side,y as shown, preventing the inrush of air. The plate is closed at the bottom. This arrangement provides sufficient air torthe burner and the plate acts asga support and guide for the sliding plate 24.
in order that the plates 22 and 24 shall move in unison, I connect them. as illustrated in the drawings. The plate 22l is pivotally attached to a bar 27 at 23, and has a lug29 fitting an opening 30 in thebar so ythat lthe plate while controlled by the bar is 4free to adjust itself in the opening 23. The connection 28 is sufficiently loose to allow the beveled end 31 of the plate to ride on an in'- clined surface 32 of the bottom plate 6, when the plate is withdrawn. The bar 27 passes throughthe front plate 4 ,of the range and has a curved outer end 33 forming a hand hold. This hand hold 33 is attached fatV its lower end to a bar 34 extending from the lower plate 24. This bar 34, in the present instance, isl made integral with the plate 24, although, in some instances, it maybe a separate piece bolted to the plate.
35 are two outlets for the products oi ,combustion formed in the bottom plate 6 of the oven and they communicate with the bottom iue 8. These openings are closed by project- Attached to the under side of this slide is a deflector 3T, which is above the burner opening.
In order to prevent the operation of the which, when turned in position, as denoted by dot and dash lines, Iiig. 1, and full lines, Fig. 3, prevents the movement of the handle 2l so that it is impossible to turn on the gas.
As soon as the slides 22 and 24 are withdrawn from the opening tothe position illustrated in Figs. l and 2, then the lever 38 is moved clear of the handle 2l of the valve. The lever, in the present'instance, has a long arm 42`slotted at 43. A pin 44 passes through this slot into a lug on the bar 27.
By the above construction, it will be seen that I am enabled to provide a combined gas and coal range with an oven burner located in the chamber below the oven bottom and to provide two sliding plates, one to close the upper portion of the burner chamber and the other to close the lower portion. These two plates are preferably connected so that they can be operated simultaneously. I provide a device for locking the gas valve when the burner Vchamber is closed, so as to prevent the Vaccidental escape of gas into the burner opening when the range 1s used as a coal range.
I claim:

The combination in a combined coal andl gas range, of an oven having a bottom plate therefor, the bottom plate of the range being spaced from the oven bottom plate so as to form a lower flue; a casing located between the two plates and forming the burner chamber; openings in the two plates connecting with the burner chamber; a burner in the chamber; two sliding plates,
the two plates and forming the burner chamber; aburner in the chamber; two sliding plates, one adapted to close the opening in the bottom plate of the oven and the other arranged tol close the opening below the burner; means for connecting the two plates so that they will be moved in unison; a valve for regulating the flow of gas to the burner; and lever mechanism connected to theplates so that when the plates are in position to close the burner opening, the valve will be locked against accidental movement.

The combination of a coal and gas range having an oven; a bottom plate for the oven; a bottom plate for the range lo-V cated some distance below the oven bottom plate and forming a flue; a casing in the iiue inclosing the burner chamber; openings in the two bottom plates; a burner in the burner chamber; a sliding lplate arranged to closethe lower opening; a sliding cover plate for the upper opening, said oven bottom being recessed to receive the upper cover plate sov that when the plate closes the opening the upper surface' of the'plate' will be ush with theV top of the oven bottom plate; a bar extending to the front of the oven and connected tothe lower sliding plate; a bolt loosely connecting the upper plate to the bar; and a ylug on the cover plate extending into an' opening inthe bar, the outer edge ofl said cover plate being beveled so that when the plate is'moved forward to expose the opening, the plate will ride upon the oven bottom plate.
5. The combination of a coal and gas range having an'oven; abottom plate for theoven; a bottom plate for the range located some distance lfrom the oven bottom plate; a casing located between the two 110 plates and forming a burner chamber; openingsin the two plates; a burner in the opening; two slides arranged to close the openings; and an outlet in the bottom plate arranged to vbe closed by the upper slide 115 when the burner Achamber is closed.
