COMBINEDCOAL AND GAS RANGE.
Application Ied August 23, 1917. Serial No. 187,737.
To4 @ZZ whom t may concern.' i
Beit known that I, JOHN@ BASH, a resident of Beaver Falls, `in i the county of `Beaver and State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and useful 1improvement in Combined `"Coal fand `Gras `lhanges; and lt `do hereby declare. the following to be a full,
clear, and exact description thereof.
My inventionrelates to stoves and more `particularly to combinedlcoal and gas stoves or ranges, and has for one of its objects to provide a stove of this class that may he easily changed `from. gas to coal operation, and also Vone in `whichthe gas and coal will be `used asa source of heat at the same time. v y i y A further object is` to provide a novel oven Iconstruction which n will operate `with either coal or gas and also one which will have a new and novel `Ventilating means.
A still"fur'ther object is to provide a novel top plate and bottom oven plate of similar construction in which the "burners are formed, making novel.` andintegral construction.
"innnthei drawings, l have shown a preferred form of my invention, but l wishit understood that various changes in detail and design may be made within the scope of the appended claims without departing from the spirit of my invention.
In the drawings,
Figure 1 is a front elevation of a stove constructed according to my invention, partly broken away to show the interior construction Fig. 2 is a top plan view of the stove burner plate;
Fig. 3 is a view thereof on the line 3--3 of Fig. 2;
Fig. t is a top plan view of the bottom oven burner plate;
Figs. 5 and 6 are detail views of the oven door showing my improved air inlet;
Fig. 7 is a detail view of one of the burner tops' Fig. 8 is a detail fragmentary view showing the oven door and its relation to the oven shelf,
Fig. 9 is a plan view of the oven shelf.
Referring more particularly to the drawings, the numeral 2 designates the base of my stove which is of well known construction, on which is supported a body portion consisting of sides 8 and 4, front 5, back 6,
pecicaton of Letters Patent.
rarement new.` a, inist,`
and top 7 having the usual` openings and closures common to coal ranges Tothe one side and within? the body portion is` formed the oven 8 which is of novel design `peculiar to my combination coal and gas stove. Formed on the sides of the oven 8i are` a plurality of inwardly extending flanges or lugs 9 spaced one above the otheron which is removably mounted a bottom or shelf member 10 when the oven is heated by gas, having its side portions cut away forming recesses 12 through which the heat from a suitable burner spaced below saidplate is adapted to How and be directed inwardly by the flanges or lugs 9.` Shelf member 10 `also has a suitable centrally arranged recess closed by a lid or cover 10 which is flush with the general plane of the member 10.
rllhe `bottom plate of `rnv oven comprises a rectangularmember 11 whichis formed of cast metal, and a burner portion consisting of a conduit 13 terminatingin` a ring por tion 14 is cast therein, the ringportion having an open top closed by `removable ring plate 15 having suitable apertures 16 throughwhich the gas mav i'iow, and being secured to the plate as at 17 or in any other desired manner.
It will be understood that the usiial flue or heat conduit extends down and under the oven and connects with the flue outlet 18 as in all well known constructions of coal stove ranges.
lWithin the oven 8 and secured to the top is a flue or ventilating member 19 comprising a three sided member which is adapted to allow an exit of the burnt gases, and also provide for the escape of the fumes from the cooking. rlhe member 19 is provided with a suitable damper or valve 19.
rlFhe oven is provided with a hinged door 20 having a surrounding flange 21 around its edge and having a ventilator or air inlet 22 in the lower portion thereof for use when gas is used. rlFhe air inlet 22 comprises an aperture having inwardly extending side flanges 23 which are formed on the door 20 and are of equal depth with the flange 21 on said door and such flanges 23 abut the shelf 10 of the oven, while a hinged closure 21 for said aperture is connected to the flanges 23 so as to open inwardly under the shelf l0 to form a top portion, and is held in such position by any desired means such as by friction between the parts. lit will be readily seen that with'such av construction, the inflowing air will pass directly to the burner or point` of combustion and will not enter the baking chamber.
Located to the one side and extending partially over the oven portion 8 is a gas heated portion comprising a burner plate 25 'similar in construction with the bottom oven plate 11 with the exception that it has a plurality of burners cast therein all similar to the burner 18, 14, 15 in the plate 11, and similarlynumbered. Extending around the plate 25 is a rim or frame 26 adapted'to suphinged door for vsaid oven, said door having an aperture in its bottom edge, a removable shelf in said oven, a burner under said shelf, a hinged closure member adapted to close said aperture, said closure being adapted to be opened inwardly and abut said shelf thereby forming lan air passage to said burner, and means for holding said last named closure in its open position.
2. In a stove, van oven portion, said oven portion having a removable shelf member, a burner below said member, a flue member arranged at the top of said oven portion to carry the gases from said burner, a damper arranged at the forward end of said flue member, a hinged door for said oven, said doorl having an aperture in its bottom edge, a hinged closure member adapted to close said aperture and adapted to be opened inwardly and abut the under side of said shelf member thereby forming an air pasvsage to said burner, and means for holding said last named closure in its open position.
3. In a stove, an oven portion, said oven portion having a removable shelf member, a burner below said member, a iiue member arranged at the top of said oven portion to carry off the gases from said burner, a hinged door for said oven, said door having an aperture at the bottom edge, means for opening and closing said aperture, and means on the inner face of said door adapted to abut said shelf member to forni a passage for air entering through said aperture when opened directly to the burner and prevent said air from passing upwardly to the oven above said shelf member.
In testimony whereof, I the said JOHN C. BAsH, have hereunto set my hand.
JOHN C. BASH.
