UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
NORMAN VAN VOORHIS, OF ROCHESTER, NEW YORK.
COMBINATION GAS COAL RANGE.
Application filed June 8, 1917. Serial No. 173,642.
T 0 all whom it may concern:
Be it.known that'I, NORMAN VAN'VOOR- His, a citizen of the United States, residing at Rochester, in the county of Monroe and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Combination Gas and Coal Ranges, of which the following is a specification.
Theobject of this invention is to provide a range with an oven which may be heated by burning either coal or gas.
This and other objects of the invention will be fully illustrated in the drawings, described in the specification and pointed out in the claims at the end thereof.
In the accompanying drawings,
Figure l is a vertical section through the range on the line 1"---1 of Fig. 3.
Fig. 2 is a vertical section on the line 2 2 of Figs. 1 and 3.
Fig. 3 is a horizontal section on the line 3 3 of Figs. 1 and 2.
Fig. 4 is a detail view of the combined gas burner and baffle plate.
In the drawings like reference numerals indicate like parts.
As shown in the figures the stove is built on the line of the ordinary coal range having a fire box 1 on one side thereof. Leading from this fire box is the flue 2 which leads over the top of the oven 3 and down at the side thereof as shown at 4:. At the bottom of the oven 3 the hot gases passing over and down the oven 3 strike against the baflie plate 5 by which they are deflected to the front of the oven as shown in Fig. 1. After the gases have passed the baflle plate 5 they are allowed to pass out through the rear of the oven and into the chimney 6. In this manner the oven 3 is surrounded by the hot gases from the fire in the fire box 1.
When it is desired to operate the oven by means of gas a false bottom 7 is inserted into the oven, which false bottom is supported on the brackets 30 and 31 a suitable distance above the floor of the oven. This false bottom will also remain in place if both coal and gas is burned. It will be removed when coal alone is burned.
A gas burner 8 projects through the bottom 9 of the oven. This gas burner comprises a pipe 10 which is integral with the bafiie plate or partition 5 by which baflle all the products of combustion from coal are compelled to flow around it in passing under Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented July 8, 1919.
the bottom of the oven so that the whole bottom will be uniformly heated. On the outer end of this pipe is provided the mixing valve 11 which furnishes the proper imixture of gas and air for the burner '8.
The inner end of the pipe is upturned and'is choked as indicated at 32 and is flared out cup-shaped above this choked or small opening. The gas will burn only above the choked opening. Before lighting the burner 8 to heat the oven by means of gas the gas is turned on by lifting a rod 12 which is mounted to slide in the top of the range. This rod has a link 13 pivotally attached thereto which in turn connects to the gas cook 14 which regulates the flow of gas from the gas main. gas cook 14 is opened and gas passes through the burner 8 so that it can be lighted to heat the false bottom 7 as shown in Fig. 2.
Attached to the handle of the cock 14 is the link 3 1 which in turn is connected to the sleeve 35 which slides on the mixing valve 11. In this mixing valve are the openings 37 through which the air can pass and when the cock is opened to turn on the gas full the sleeve 35 is drawn back to fully uncover these openings. When it is closed the sleeve is moved forward to fully close the openings and when it is only partially closed the sleeve is moved partially forward to shut ofi a corresponding amount of air and keep the mixture of air and gas uniform under all conditions.
The rod 12 has also pivotally attached thereto the valve plates 15 and 16 which are used to open and close the inlet and outlet openings 17 and 18 respectively. The inlet opening 17 is provided to furnish auxiliary air to the gas burner 8 for the complete combustion of the gas which passes therethrough.
When the rod 12 is lifted the The outlet opening 18 is provided to permit the burned gases from the burner 8 to exhaust therethrough into the chimney flue.
From the foregoing it will be seen that when the rod 12 is lifted the gas is turned on and the openings 17 and 18 are opened so that when the gas is lighted inside of the oven a complete combustion is secured therein and a uniform heat is generated in the oven.
It will also be seen that the opening from which the mixture of gas and air passes through the bottom of the opening is a very small one all of the oven bottom surroundtheless by ing this opening is exposedto the'heating effect of coal when coal-is burned either alone or with gas. This opening forms a cold spot in theibottom ofthe .oven when coal alone is used for fuel but the spot is so small that the distribution of heat over the oven bottom is practically uniform, nevermay be quickly heated by burning gas and this will heat the chimney flue and cause the coal fire if present to burn up quickly. If the gas is turned off the oven can be heated by the coal fire alone.
Because the gas is burned inside of the oven it is burned very efiiciently and the oven can therefore be operated with a very low rate of gas consumption.
I claim:
1, The combination of a flue of a gas .ran e a removable baflie late situated in .Copies of this patent may be obtained for five cents each, by addressing the the use of this stove the oven said flue, said baffle plate cast integral therewith.
2. The combination of an oven of a flue situated below said even, a removable baflie plate situated in said flue a fuel pipe situated within the flue and extending into the oven, said fuel pipe being formed with a single small round opening in the end thereof constituting a burner, said baffle plate and the pipe being cast integral with each other in a single piece.
3., A removable baflie plate for the flue of a gas range, said baffle plate having a fuel pipe cast integral therewith, said pipe eX- tending above the bafiie plate to pass through the floor of the oven and extending rearwardly from the baflie plate to pass through the end wall of the flue.
In testimon whereofl aflix m si nature.
