TOOTH HAVING AN INTERGHANGEABLE FACING.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented June 1, 1920.
Application filed October 18, 1919. Serial No. 331,524.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, FRANK C. GooDwIN, citizen of the United States, residing at Portsmouth, in the county of Scioto and State of Ohio, have invented new and useful Improvements in a Tooth Having an Interchangeable Facing, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to a tooth of the interchangeable type, having a metallic backing, and it relates more particularly to an anterior tooth.
The object is to provide in connection with a facing element of porcelain, a metallic backing, comprising a plurality of elements connected together by soldering, and so arranged that prior to the soldering operation, one of the elements may be cut to the size required for accommodating the particular facing element which it is designed to fit.
A further object is to provide a metallic backing which shall consist of a plate to be reduced to the required size by cutting along the edge or edges, and a plurality of grooved or channeled elements adapted to receive the edges of the plate, the opposite edges of the channeled membersthat is, those opposite the edges secured to the platebeing secured, by cement, in grooves formed in the porcelain element.
With the foregoing and other objects in view, the invention consists in the novel .construction, combination, and arrangement of elements hereinafter described and claimed.
In the drawings,
Figure 1 is a face view of the tooth, with the backing in full lines and dotted lines,
Fig. 2 is an end view,
Fig. 3 is a side view,
Fig. 4c shows the elements of the backing detached,
Fig. 5 is an end view of a modified form, with the flanges and plate formed in one piece,
Fig. 6 shows the metallic element of Fig. 6 detached.
In carrying out my invention, I provide a facing element 10 of porcelain, and of suitable configuration, and provide a metallic backing comprising a plate 12, somewhat broader at one end, 14, as shown,'the plate being of suitable size, so that it may be trimmed or out along the edges, in order to accommodate the particular facing element to which it is to be applied.
A plurality of grooved or channeled elements 15 and 16 are employed, and the porcelain facing element 10 is grooved as shown at 17 and 18 for receiving the edges of the channeled members, the opposite edges of these members being secured by soldering to the exposed side of the backing plate.
The metallic backing havingbeen applied in the manner indicated, and secured by cement, the tooth is ready for use in the usual manner. Particular attention is directed to the means by which I provide a backing element which may be applied to facing elements of different sizes.
In Figs. 5 and 6, I have shown a plate 20 having flanged portions 21 formed thereon, these portions 21 being designed to enter channels in the facing element, as in the previous instance. The plate may of course be cut to the required size before the flanges are formed, or rather before both flanges are formed.
What I claim is- 1. The combination with a facing element for a tooth, of a backing element comprising a plate, inturned flanged portions on opposite edges of the plate, and
means for securing the flanged portions to the facing element.
2. The combination with the facing element of a tooth, provided with grooves in the sides thereof, of a backing element comprising a plate member and independent channeled members secured to said plate member, and adapted to engage the aforesaid grooves in the facing element.
3. The combination with the facing element of a tooth, of a backing element to be secured thereto, said element last named comprising a plate of approximately rectangular configuration and wider at one end than at the other, and channeled members to be secured to said plate, the mem-' bers last named including flanged portions, corresponding flanges contacting with the exposed surface of the plate, and the remaining flanges of the respective grooved elements engaging and being secured to the facing element of the tooth.
In testimony whereof I afiix my signature.
F. o. GOODWIN.
