Be it known that I, CHARLES D. BRosoH,

a citizen of the United States, residinor at Duquoin, in the county of Perry and Sbtate of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements,y in Guards for Pick- Handles, of which the following is a specification.

My invention relates to an improvement in guards for pick-handles, and other tools.

The main idea of the invention is to prolong the life of the pick-handle, and thus greatly reduce the expense.

This invention consists of a plate of metal, preferably galvanized, having pointed stubs at the ends adapted to be driven into the handle to facilitate applying the guard, as well as being provided with screw or nailholes through which screws or nails are in-V serted to fasten it in place on the handle.

A, represents the pick-handle. The Vnumeral l represents the guard. This is preferably made of galvanized metal in the general form shown in Fig. 2, and it may be stamped from a blank, (as indicated by the dotted lines in Fig. 2) by means of a suitable die. converging slightly, and with a notch 3 at the center of the outer edge, andl a half with sharp spurs 4 at the side edges adapted to be driven into the handle. The guard is likewise provided with screw-holes 5 It is formed with the edges 2, 2,

adapted to receive the screws 6 for securing the guard in place on the handle.

The spurs by being driven into the handle, lirst at one end, and then, after wrapping the guard around the handle, in at the other end, make it easier to put the guard on the lpick, and hold it in place while putting Von the guard.

This guard is comparatively short, and

will not interfere with the hand of the oper I ator while in use.

The notches 3 and 4 make the guard lighter to use and easier to put on the handle, and also when the pick gets loose on the handle,it may be'wedged back on withtheir life is from six weeks to two months,

whereas by actual test a pick-handle with my improved guard will last from siX to eight months under the same conditions.

I claim:

1. A pick-handle guard made of metalV having inturned spurs at the side edges as well as holes to receive screws for fastening the guard to the handle.

2. A pick-handle guardmade of metal having inturned spurs at the side edges as well as holes to receive screws for fastening the guard to the handle, and provided with V-shaped notches at the center and corners of the outer edge.
