FIGURE TOY.
Specification of Letters Patent. Patented Aug. 21, 1917.
Application filed December 29, 1916. Serial No. 139,569.
a toy of the character indicated which includes a base or support having figures mounted thereon the said figures being preferably in the form of men and having jointed legs connected with their bodies there being means provided for swinging the legs to cause the figures to have the appearance of running.
In the accompanying drawing Figure 1 is a perspective view of the toy;
Fig. 2 is a longitudinal sectional view of the same;
Fig. 3 is a bottom view of the same.
The toy comprises a base 1 which is preferably in the form of a box and which is open at its under side. A shaft 2 is journaled under the intermediate portion of the box and provided in thevicinity of its ends with cranks 3. Shafts 4 are journaled under the top of the base 1 and are arranged in pairs. One pair of the shafts 4 is located at each side of the shaft" 2. Each of the shafts 4: is provided in the vicinity of one end with a crank 5. Rods or bars 6 are pivotally connected with the cranks 3 and 5. The cranks 5 are longer than the cranks 3 consequently as the shaft 2 is turned the shafts 4 are caused to swing back and forth but they do not describe complete rotation. The rods 6 which are connected with the cranks 5 which'are disposed toward the shaft 2 are shorter than the rods 6 which are connected with the cranks 5 disposed away from the shaft 2. Arms 7 are connected with the shafts 4: and extend through openings 8 provided in the top of the base 1. As illustrated in the drawing the shafts tat one side of the shaft 2 areprovided each with one arm 7 while the shafts 4: at the opposite side of the shaft 2 are each providedwith two arms 7. The first mentioned shafts 4C are adapted to operate the legs of a single figure while the last mentioned shafts 4: are adapted to operate the legs of two figures.
Uprights 9 are mounted upon the base 1 and the bodies 10 of figures are mounted upon the said uprights. The figures are provided withsection legs 11 the sections of which are pivotally connected together and the said legs are pivotally connected with the bodies 10. The extremities of the legs are pivotally conn cted with the upper end portions of the arms 7. The shaft 2 may be rotated by means of wheels fixed thereto which will turn as the-base 1 is drawn over a floor or other plain surface or a spring or other suitable motor may be connected with theshaft :2 for turning the same. As the shaft 2 is turned the shafts 4 of both of the sets'of shafts 4 are swung in opposite directions whereby the adjacent arms of the said shafts are swung back'and forth in opposite directions. As these arms are connected with the legs of the figures the legs are swung whereby the figures will simulate running movement. The figures may be decorated to represent any desired characters and as illustrated in the drawing the single figure which is connected with one pair'of the shafts 4 represents an officer of law who is in pursuit of the two figures which are connected with the other two shafts 4. The last two figures are characterized to represent fugitives from justice.
From the foregoing description taken in conjunction with the accompanying drawing it will be seen that a figure toy of simple and durable structure is provided and that the same may be operated for amusement and possibly demonstrative purposes.
Having described the invention what is claimed is:
A toy comprising a base, a shaft j ournaled thereon and provided with cranks, other shafts journaled thereon and arranged in pairs there being one pair of the last mentioned. shafts located at each side of the first mentioned shaft the last mentionedshafts each having a crank, pitmen operatively con necting the cranks of the last mentioned shafts with the cranks of the first mentioned shaft whereby the last mentioned shafts are swung as the first mentioned shaft is rotated, arms carried by the last mentioned shafts and extending through the base, figures mounted upon the base, and legs pivotally connected With the figures and pivotally connected With the arms, the inner ends of the pitmen at the same end portions of the shafts being connected with the same crank upon the first mentioned shaft whereby uni- 10 form predetermined relative movement is imparted to the legs of all of the figures.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature.
