Description

TOY.
v.APPLICATION FILED JAN. 29, 1920.
Patented ont. 11, 1921.
UNITED STATES ENOCH B. STEVERSON, F PORTSMOUTH, VIRGINIA.
TOY.
Application filed January 29, 1920.
I To all whom t may concern bodiment is illustrated in the accompanying drawing, wherein:
Figure lis a front view partly in section.
Fig. 2 is a section on the plane indicated by the line 2-2 of Fig. 1.
Fig. 3 is a side view.
Fig. 4 is a detail view of the counterbalancing weight.
Fig. 5 is a detail view of the modification showing a slightly different connection between the movable parts.
The apparatus consists essentially of a rolling base 10 which may be longitudinally convened as shown to adapt it to receive a tilting or rocking, as well as a rolling movement, said base comprising sections 1l spaced apart to form an interveningslot 12 and secured centrally by an axial pin 18 which is offset between the planes of the inner ends of the base sections to form a crank 14.
Mounted upon the spindle preferably in the line of the aXis of the base are the standards 15 which exteriorly ofthe base carry or are shaped to represent an object or ligure either of a grotesque human or animal form as shown at 16 having movable member such as the head 17 and arms 18. The standards are extended below the pivotal point represented by the spindle 13 and are connected with a counter-balance weight 19 to maintain the ligure in an upright pogition regardless of the rotation of the base.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Oct. 11, 1921. Serial No. 355,008.
T he members 17 and 18 as shown may be Vpivoted to the body portion of the figure as shown respectively at 2O and 21 and the members 18 are preferably attached to a rock shaft 22 having a crank 23 ,which is connected by a pitman 24 with the crank 14 of the spindle 13 to the end that as the base rolls upon any suitable supporting surface and thereby causes the rotation of the crank 14, a rocking motion will be imparted to the shaft 22 to cause a swinging or waving movement of the the arms of the figure. In the same way the member 17 representing a head may be provided with a crank arm 24 also connected by a pitman or link 25 with the crank 141to the end that a nodding movement may be imparted thereto simultaneously with the movement of the arms. As illustrated in the modified form Fig. 5 the motion of the head member 26 may be imparted thereto from the upper crank 27 which carries the arm members by a short intermediate' link 28, but in either case as will be seen the mo-U tion is imparted to each of the"movable members from the crank located in the base and formed by the offset portion of the spindle by which the members of the base are connected.
What is claimed is:
A toy having a rolling base comprising sections separated at their adjacent ends to form an intervening space and connected by a spindle having a crank arranged in said space, a figure having standardsextending into said space and pivotally mounted upon the said spindle7 said standards being provided with a counter-balancing weight and said figure being' provided with pivotal members, cranks connected with said movable members, and links connecting the cranks of said movable members with the crank of said spindle.
,In testimony whereof I affix my signature.
