To all whom it may concern:

Be 1t known that-I, JOHN W. CURRY, a

citizen of the United States, residin at Kane, in the county of McKean and tate of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Package-Ties, of which the following is a specification.

The present invention relates to cord and rope holders and more particularly to new and useful improvements in package ties.

An object of my invention is to provide a simple and cheaply constructed package tie which will securely bind a package when used in conjunction with any suitable flexible tying element such as a cord string or the like.

Another object of my invention is to pro vide a device of the class described formed preferably of av single strand of wire having means associated therewith for connection with a tying element such as a cord string or the like, said device being formed with cord gripping means whereby to engage the free ends of the cord when wound a number of times about a .package or the like.

A further object of my invention is to provide a package tying device of the class described so constructed as to readily adapt itself to various contingencies, thereby fa cilitating the application of the device to a package or the like. 7

Other objects and advantages to be derived from the use of my improved package tie will appear from the following detail description and the claims, taken with an inspection of the accompanying drawing, in which Figure 1 is a perspective view of a package, showing the preferred form of package tie applied thereto, embodying the improvements of my invention,

Referring more particularly to the drawings, wherein similar characters of reference designate like and corresponding parts throughout the various views, and specifically referring to the preferred form of my invention shown in Figs. 1 to 3, I provide a package tie formed of a single strand of wire designated 1 in its entirety, and a loop as at 2 intermediate its ends. The loop portion forms two parallel portions 3, said parallel portions being bent upon themselves as at 4: to provide inherently resilient arms 5 in spaced relation to the portions 3, said arms 5 being inclined bent upon themselves as at 6, to provide a spaced writing or di.- recting portion 7 the free ends of the strand being looped to form eyes 8. The eyes 8 form directing or guiding means for amply inserting or facilitating the insertion of a flexible tying element. in a manner hereinafter set forth in detail.

In order to prevent the package tie from rolling over when in use on a package I provide a base portion formed of a pair of plates 9 and 10. The plates 9 and 10 overlap the portion 3 of the package tie, and are welded together attheir free ends. This structure is best shown in Fig. 1, this also being shown in a modified form of my invention illustrated in Fig. 4 described in detail hereinafter.

The manner of placing a tying element about a package is best shown in Fig. 1, the preferred form of my invention being herein shown in view. The package is designated 11, and the tying element is designated 12-, having one end thereof connected to the loop 2, the intermediate portion of said tying element being wound tight about the package, the intersections of said loop about the package being designated 13. The free ends 1 1 of'the tying element 12 is engaged between the portions 3 and 5 of the package tie and is then looped'upon themselves to be directed between the eyes 8. The tying elements are now brought rearwardly toward the center portions 5. Pulling forwardly'on the free ends of the tying element will bind securely between the portions 5.

Referring to Fig. 4 in which the modified form of my invention is shown, the wire strand 15 is provided with the looped portions 16, gripping portions 17 and guiding eyes 18. The base plates are designated 19 and are formed intimately with the plate shown in Figs. 1 to 3. In using this form of my invention the tying element is placed between the portions 17 and 15 and looped upon itself and drawn between the eyes 18 and portions 17 whereby securely binding said tying element" against accidental displacement.

Referring to Fig. 6 I have provided a modified form of my invention wherein a strand of wire is looped as at 20 to form an eye for engagement with a tying element, said strand being formed with wing portions 21, the arms thereof being twisted as at 22 and bent upon themselves as at. 23 forming spaced diver 'ent spring arms 24 formed with eyes 25 on the free ends thereof. The tying element is secured to this form of my invention similarly to the form of my invention illustrated in Fig. 4, the distinguishing feature being the integral formation of the wings 21 to prevent overturning of the tying element when used or when being tied.

Referring to the further modified form of "my invention illustrated in Fig. 7 I have provided a strand of wire formed with a loop or eye 26, said strand being formed with wings 27 and 28, the portions of the strands forming the wings being looped about themselves as at 29 and 30 and adjacent the loop 26 and extending outwardly as at 31 and bent upon themselves as at 32, and terminating in spring arms 33 provided with guiding or directing eyes 34. This form of my invention is used similarly to the forms of my invention illustrated in Figs. 4 and 6, the distinguished feature being the peculiar arrangement of the strand of wire adjacent the looped portion whereby a strong and durable wire structure is provided.

It will readily be apparent to those skilled in the art that I have provided a new and improved package tic which is simple in construction and cheap to manufacture and .which may be readily and quickly applied to any package. I do not limit myself to any particular form of the tie shown in the drawings however, I do lay particular stress upon the specific formation of the arm gripping the tying element. This gripping feature insures against possible disconnection by Letters-Patent is of the tying element from the tie The fea-' ture of my invention wherein the base plate 9 prevents overturning of the tying device during a tying operation is a feature of the invention upon which I also lay particular stress. 7

A package tie of the class described including a strand of wire having a looped portion intermediate the ends thereof to provide an eye for engagement with the tying element, wing portions associated with said wire adjacent the loop to prevent the is from overturning, the free ends of said wire being intimately associated in. parallel spaced relation and bent back upon themselves, and eyes formed on the extremities of said ends whereby the tying element may be guided into a gripping position.
