I PACKAGE THE. APPLICATION FILED MAY 18. ms.

INVENTOR WITN-ESSES W M Q wen A BY WW ATTORNEY I JOSEPH w. nn CAMP, or ELKHORN, MONTANA.
PACKAGE-TIE.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented May 28, 1918.
Application filed May 18, 1916. Serial No. 98,414.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOSEPH W. DE CAMP, a citizen of the United States, residing at Elkhorn, in the county of J eiferson and State of Montana, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Package- Ties, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to a package tie and the primary object is to provide means for receiving and fastening the ends of a binding cord for holding the package together in a manner that will obviate the use of tiying knots in the end of the wrapping cor A further object of this invention is the provision of a package tie which consists of comparatively few parts and is simple in construction, but durable and well adapted to withstand the rough usage to which devices of this character are ordinarily subjected.
For a full description of this invention and the advantages and merits thereof, reference is to be had to the following description and the accompanying drawings, wherein is illustrated the preferred form of my invention, in which;
Figure 1 is a perspective view of a package showing my device attached thereto.
Fig. 2 is a plane view of the device.
Fig. 3 is a vertical section on the line 3-3 of Fig. 2.
The device is formed from a single strand of wire designated in its entirety by the numeral 1. Intermediate the ends of the strand of wire is formed a circular loop 2 which is designed to serve as a handle or thumb lever whereby the device may be held upon the surface of a package while a binding cord is being secured thereto. A twist 3 is formed in the wire at the terminals of the portion which forms the loop 2 and the ends of the wire extend at right angles from the twist 3 to provide the retaining arms 5 and 6 which may be of any desired length and are disposed at right angles for the purpose of providing an equalized tug on the binding cord which is wrapped around the package.
The terminals of each of the retaining arms 5 and 6 are bent backwardly on themselves as at 7 and 8 to form the loops 9 and 10. The extreme ends of the strand of wire are extended backwardly toward the twist portion 3 and slightly curved outwardly to provide the V- shaped notches 11 and 12 for receiving the ends of the binding cord. In order that the device may lie flat upon the package, the portion that forms the loops 9 and 10 is bent upwardly and over the ends of the strand of wire as designated by the numeral 13 in Fig. 3 of the drawing. In this manner the extreme ends of the strand of wire lie fiat upon the package for their entire length which is the distance from the loops 7 and 8 to the ends of the strand of wire. The twist 3 is also formed, as shown by Fig. 3 of the drawing, in a manner that will allow the loop to lie as fiat as possible while in use.
As shown by Fig. 1 of the drawing one end of the wrapping cord A is fastened in the notch 12 and it is then wrapped around the package any number of times and extended under the retaining arm 5 and brought upwardly lengthwise at right angles and longitudinally around the package any number of times after which the free end of the wrapping cord is secured in the notch 11. The circular loop 2 provides a handle for the device and, in use, the person tying the package will grasp the same with his left hand and firmly press upon the loop 2 with his thumb thereby holding the device in the desired position for receiving the wrapping cord.
I claim:
A package tie comprising a single strand of wire bent intermediate its ends to provide an enlarged loop, the wire being twisted to maintain the configuration of the loop, right angularly disposed retaining arms projecting from the said twisted portion of the wire, the terminals of the said retaining arms being bent to provide loops 9 and 10, the said loops being elongated and having their side portions disposed parallel and in the same plane as the corresponding retaining arm, the terminal of the loop 9 being bent over the top of the corresponding and the side portion of each of the said retaining arm and flared outwardly from loops. 10 t the same to form a V shaped notch, the ter- In testimony whereof I efiix my signature minel of the loop 10 being bent under the in'presence of two Witnesses.
corresponding retaining arm and flared out JO'SEPH' W. DE CAMP. wardly to form a second V shaped notch, V/itnesses:
each of the seid terminals being disposed in W. B. HUNDLEY,
the same plane as the said retaining arms H. R. HOUGHTON.
